I carried both the M16 A1 and the M16 A2. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the M16 A1 and I can tell you that from personal experience. It was lighter in my opinion it was just as accurate for our intended purposes and just as reliable. Let's see the three major upgrade of the M16 A2 the rear sighting system, the longer buttstock, heavier government profile barrel that had the new NATO standard 1/7" twist for the new 62grn SS109 round, and the A2 flash hider with the bottom ports closed. Lastly a reinforced lower receiver with limited to three round burst fire capability. Honestly the only really functional upgrade that really meant anything was probably the new and improved flash hider and the new one in 7 twist barrel, and that was only to comply with the new NATO standard round. They should have just put the new improved flash hider on it and left it alone, maybe upgrade to the new handguards because they were more durable and did not have a specific left or right side. What they ended up doing was taking the rifle that was supposed to be lightweight and handy and they turned it back into a heavy rifle with no real justifiable advantages.

@Didymus-vz6uy4 жыл бұрын
First and only time I ever shot a machine gun (full auto M4 around 750rpm to 850rpm) I fired perfect 3 round bursts except for the last 3 rounds in the magazine. Talking to my dad (was a reservist and used the A1), he always said the 3 round burst was stupid attempt by the military to correct a training issue with a mechanical device. Instead of giving soldiers a few more magazines to practice controlled bursts, they threw in that shitty burst mechanism.

I hear they made it heavier and unnecessarily complicated
@rdrrr Жыл бұрын
@@LL-cz5ql Yeah, the A2 is about 1lb heavier than the A1. It's mostly due to the bull barrel, which also means a lot of the weight added is near the muzzle. In terms of "unnecessarily complicated", the burst-fire mechanism is a mess; it screws with the trigger pull weight, making it inconsistent between shots. Also, if you don't pull the trigger all the way you might only get one or two shots rather than two... worse, if that happens, the next burst will "finish" the incomplete burst... so if you pulled the trigger and only got two shots, the next "burst" will be a single shot instead of the three rounds you're expecting. The rest of the changes - longer stock, finger groove on the pistol grip, more complex rear sights - are very much a matter of opinion.

I fired an M16A1 a grand total of 2 range sessions when I was in the Navy (early to mid 80s.) The rifles rattled like a can of gravel, but they worked. Messing with ARs over the years since has convinced me that the A2 sights are excellent sights (if you leave them alone after they are zeroed.) I primarily shoot with irons, and I love the A2s. I never fired a select fire version of the A2, but knowing the mechanics of the three round burst mechanism has convinced me that I would have hated it. A friend who was in the Marine Corps told me how the burst mechanism made the trigger successively heavier with each pull of the trigger in semi-auto. He said it made it hard to qualify with it. Really a very bad feature it seems to me.
@gsmith4295 Жыл бұрын
as an 80's & 90's Army guy that carried the A1 and was switched to the A2, the A1's rattled because we were shooting old ones from Vietnam that went through a lot combat and travels. Although the A2 triggers were tighter than the A1, I actually found qualifying with the A2 easier. Always shot expert with the A2. once those sights were set it was dead on. Only thing I didnt understand was why the 3 round burst. They say it was to save ammo but a two round burst would have been a better choice IMO if they felt they had to have a burst instead of a full auto. Even with that questionable 3 round burst, the A2 was one heck of a rifle.

I went through Benning in 90. We were initially issued A1. Prior to the range.. we were issued A2. During training.. every third or fourth cartridge through my weapon was a misfire. I was instructed to take the weapon to the Armorer. It was discovered that the weapon had a broken hammer spring. I was amazed that it functioned at all. The Armorer issued me a brand new, fresh from the box A2. I opened it. I could SWEAR.. to this day.. there was NO elevation adjustment on the rear sight of THAT weapon. Heavy barrel. Burst mode. Brass deflector. Everything EXCEPT the rear sight elevation adjustment. I qualified with the weapon. I loved that son-of-a-bitch. I had to return it, of course. Each weapon I was issued after that.. had the rear sight elevation adjustment. People tell me that I am full of shit, but.. I SWEAR.. THAT rifle was different. I've never seen one like it since. Does this configuration exist.. or am I delusional? I knew it was special.. it was just the way it felt in my hands.. the way it functioned. It was a quality rifle. I can't remember the serial number, but.. I do recall that there was something about it. It was odd.

The M16a2 was a failed weapons platform. It was designed to be able to shoot the USMC qualification NOT be a better battlefield weapon. You don’t design a gun to meet your range. You design a weapon for current and future battles. This is why you don’t let the Marines pick weapons. If you look a USMC historic weapon procurement you’d see they shouldn’t be involved in it. Remember they turned down the M1 garand cause they thought it to be a waste of ammo. Turn down the M1 Abrams cause the M60 was good enough. I personally believe the Marines to be pretty smart cookies but here they suck.
