@@SomeOne-yv8jfWhen this woman got married, women weren’t even allowed getting a credit card without a man co-signing on it. Women weren’t allowed to get loans, mortgages, or even open their own bank account. This woman didn’t “do it to herself”, it’s what women of her generation were told to do- be slaves to their husbands. Add to that the decades of manipulation, gaslighting and abuse she endured… Her husband did this to her. And in a marriage, legally there are no “his” and “her” assets- that law exists because of despicable men like her husband.

After seeing enough of these I would bet that the husband would say that he took control of the finances in order to save the house. There have been some where you hear “my spouse takes my entire check and is being financially abusive” then come to find out they are in $100k of debt and their entire check doesn’t even cover interest. Truth generally lies somewhere in between and is hard to find with only one side of the story.

I wondered that, too, but when she said he took the finances over twice and messed things up and she had to fix it, I don't think anyone, much less a control freak, would've handed it back over to someone incompetent... so he had to have been both desperate and convinced she could help. It had a ring of truth to it and, bless her heart, she said it so non-judgmentally...she just set things right, only to have him take it again. And now again. It does sound like he may be unsound, bc if she were the one that bad, no way would he hand it back again, ever. Strange situation, and we may never know. But regardless, she shouldn't be going without money for food. That alone is a red flag. One of them is either a sick, abusive controller or the other is a convincing slanderous, phony victim...hard to say what's going on here. If I had to guess, I'd say she's the sane one and afraid of what he'll do if she stands up to him. Sometimes a person may be holding something over on them and threatening to tell the world if they challenge them anything. (At least, that's what happens on Perry Mason, haha.) Idk.

There's more to this story than we're being told. For one, if her husband has filed for SS benefits, she automatically gets a letter that prompts her to file for the equivalent of half of his benefit minus her own. If she isn't entitled to her own SS, she's entitled to half of his. Secondly, let me speak directly to her: Don't be a victim. Burying your head in the sand is avoidance and can only lead to more trouble. You don't need a job, you need guidance which Dave tried to give you. I think you're truly worried to discover how bad things really are, but that's not going to make it go away. Do it TODAY.

Question- why do you assume she would know about how SS benefits work? And, if he’s controlling the grocery pennies, he is probably controlling the mail if he knows she’s getting a letter. And yes, she needs to get a divorce. But!! Being married to someone for 52 years and having hell for the last 4 years makes it hard to truly walk away. It’s not a victim situation. It’s her reality. She does have places she can go and there’s plenty of ways out of situations like these *IF* you’re aware of them and the necessity of leaving. She’s close to seeing the reality and necessity, but ultimately it’s not our decision. It’s hers. And calling her a “victim” is just annoying and rude. Stop.

@@pandabear7177I’m not being rude, I’m being factual. If he has filed to collect SS benefits, she, as his spouse is sent a letter to inform her that she may be entitled to increased benefits if his income exceeded hers. Now, if he impedes the delivery of that letter, that’s criminal. She’s stated that she has no income and at 72, having worked for not only the family business, but in an administrative role for a non-profit, she must be drawing SS benefits. So she has an income. I’m saying that we’re not getting the full story and there comes a point to where we take action to right a wrong or simply resign ourselves to victimhood. Very simple. Not rude, just factual.

@greyhoundgirl9726 Marry the right person. People hook up and get attached emotionally *before* knowing enough to decide whether this person is a treasure worth giving yourself to - bad idea. Once attachment comes in, people tend to make poor decisions. One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was, Don't date anyone you wouldn't marry. Not even one date...bc things one unthinkable can creep in a little at a time, including marriage. Knowing whether they're worth dating requires time getting to know them without the incredible binding power of intimacy. It can bind you to anyone. Get to know people in groups and public settings without doing things that will blind your good judgment. Unless your standards are low, thus will eliminate a lot of creeps and semi-creeps quickly. If you can discern a creep the first 10 minutes, imagine what you can uncover within 3 weeks or months. Save a lot of heartache. I found my prince. Years of marriage and tho there have been bumps, it is one of the best things in the world to be known and loved, and to know and love, and be fully committed. And I know he would literally give his life for mine in an emergency. The trick is, marry someone who will give their life daily (while retaining self respect), while you do the same. When the giving and loving and mutual, you've found the best. You may have to go counter-cultural to weed out the others to find them.
