AMEN! I've driven Mercedes cars for the past 24 years. Bought my first one when I was 19. But not new ones; OLD ones - 1980s diesels. Back when they built good cars. My daily driver is 37 years old, paid for, restored to near-new condition, no emissions inspections, no check engine light, just a solid old car that any idiot can work on himself. I have another one with 752K miles on it. Good old cars back then. I see the flashy newer cars pass me, and I smile, imagining how much their payment is every month, lol!!

I'm an accountant and have always found hilarious driving my beat-up car into accountant's meetings, surrounded by vehicles worth up to 200x mine. Most vehicles depreciate, so I've invested in property, as that appreciates in value. I've never owned a vehicle that I've paid more than $5,500 for. We currently have three vehicles, and combined they're worth less than our most valuable home asset: our piano. I don't charge the earth: my hourly rate is lower than most in my profession. But I'm happy dealing with little people and sleeping well at night, knowing I've done my best at my job. :-) Years ago, I lost a client as I told them (they were in their sixties) that they needed to sell their 'prized possession': their vehicle 100% financed that they paid $60,000 for, and which was sinking them financially, and they only used 'for fun' once per month. Sounded nuts to me, so I told them so, and they told me I wasn't doing my job properly. I'm sure they're still complaining about not getting anywhere financially.

Can’t afford 2,000 to fix a Ford Fusion Buys 20,000 Ford Fusion

No way that would cost 2000 unless she went to the stealership.
@robindear50435 жыл бұрын
The cost to fix her Ford Fusion would have conservatively been only about $600-800. Why in the name of all that's sacred she would get rid of that car to buy a $20,000 Ford Fusion? If I heard right, wasn't the "newer" Ford Fusion only a few years newer than the car she got rid of?
@billgateskilledmyuncle235 жыл бұрын
@@robindear5043 it's a woman thing and an emotional decision. I remember when my mom's water heater went out and as we were mopping up the water because the tank busted, she started shouting that she was going to sell her house. I told her that's like selling your car over a dead battery. If women would take an interest in fixing things themselves, they would think more analytically. The only way to have a car that never needs brake work is to not own a car or trade yearly.
@robindear50435 жыл бұрын
I think she was being shortsighted in her decision, and now regrets it. It may have taken a few days, maybe even a few weeks, but she could have inquired around and found a mechanic or shop that could've fixed her car for a reasonable price. I have known just as many men who make emotional, "spur of the moment" decisions, then later, after the smoke clears, they regret it. This has nothing to do with gender. Will she negotiate with the dealership to return the car, even though her 30 days have passed? I doubt it. She didn't mention it, but I wonder if she traded her car in for the $20,000 one, or has it sitting in her driveway?

I come from parents who grew up during the great depression. I was in a house at 21, two children and we were never late on anything. Cash on the barrel. Old cars, scratch cooking, and strict budget. I fit every job in to make it work. Mortgage paid off at 41. My contemporaries couldn't understand how we did it. They paid rent, drove a nice car (or two), bought the latest toys and didn't budget. Our kids went to local colleges and worked. No debt. I thank my parents (high school educated & hard working people) for their frugal ways. ❤

@@raymondkay4896 It is simply the fallacy of the lack of upfront costs you get with buying a new car, rather than repairing a current one and/or fixing up a really cheap car. It is just really short sighted thinking, along with not being able to save any money, making it hard to pay for any sudden repairs. It leads to an endless loop of debt.
@HermannTheGreat5 жыл бұрын
@@TankAssTanner I agree, I paid $3300 for an low mileage 18 year old camry a few years ago, it was nothing special, put about $750 in it to fix a few things that popped up within first few months(starter, timing belt, re-seal engine valve cover), another $200 since then and it's running just fine. So basically 4-5k for a car I've owned 2.5 years already with no sign of stopping, and every year I drive it I'm basically paying myself. Most physicians have 300k+ in student loans out of med school, and most manage to pay it off pretty quickly after becoming residency. A lot of hospitals will help pay for student loan forgiveness, residents have a cheap lifestyle by default (they don't really have time to vacation) and making attending or joining a practice can mean six figure sign on bonuses A lot of Dave's advice doesn't really apply to people pursuing any health degree but especially medicine. Unless you have a rich family, you need to accept having an extreme amount of debt for quite a while. There aren't really opportunities for semesters off or a second job while you're in a rigorous academic program; managing your living expenses and maximizing what a hospital will pay for are your only real options. 345k each is the high end of normal. I was taken aback by how disgusted (lack of a better term) he was with this caller when that's not an abnormal number for first year residents. The guy called with some pretty good questions about prioritizing where to put income and Dave just kept talking over him with "big debt bad." For what it's worth family med can be quite well paying if you start up a practice and do billable procedures in house. Do a lot of family med docs do that, no. But the possibility is there.

Dave gives really good advice to people who are fine working 9-5 for someone else, but youll never be able to retire at 45 sipping pina coladas in mexico with his advice. Most debts are fine to keep, CC isnt one of those, but, paying off just about any other debt is just for piece of mind. assuming the interest is below ~5%, I personally wouldn't bother paying them off, instead if invest my money, it's not hard to get above 10% ROI on investments which means by taking out a debt instead of paying with cash youre 5% a year, every year until you die, richer than you would be paying off the loan. To most people this is hard to wrap your ahead around but it's the mindset your average millionaire has.
