He decided to open it up because the card was a little bit dusty, the fans blades and the heatsinks were a little bit dusty. Nobody would open up a card like that just for that reason....
@dieselphiend4 ай бұрын
I've been using a vacuum cleaner to clean out my PC's for years, and I've haven't killed anything yet. It's fine to vacuum fans, and heatsinks just don't let the vacuum spin up your fans as that will create a voltage that the card would have to sink. I use a large makeup brush to get into places, and displace the dust with the vacuum tube close by. Just don't touch bare PCB's with the vacuum or the brush, and be aware that the vacuum tube itself can potentially build up a static charge from all of the dust passing over it.

The fan’s producing voltage only happens if they happen to spin in one direction and they have to be a certain type of fan design anyway. Besides it’s a non-issue as there are diodes that prevent voltage backfeeding into to GPU so this concern is moot. In other words it’s a myth that just won’t go away.

I'd like to see a teardown maintenance tutorial on graphics cards. Specially how you go about figuring out and buying the correct sizes(thickness) of thermal pads. I'd like to convert my Asus 1080ti from water blocked back to air cooled. But I have no clue how to replace the thermal pads, where to put them, what size goes where, etc.
@noth6064 ай бұрын
Your best starting point is to find a guide with pics from someone tearing the card down to clean or put a block on it to see where the pads go, then see if you can find info on the specific cards pad thicknesses(ram and VRM often use different pad), or measure/guesstimate from your old pads if you have 'em. Keep in mind one size thicker is usually fine, one thinner might not be. Good luck. I had to do the same but with a GTX-680 a long time ago, had a watercooled pair, then one went flaky and I swapped the whole setup to a 1080, and then needed the good 680 for a secondary rig, I found an old forum thread about a guy wateblock swapping the same card asking the same thing since he ripped a pad.

Steve from Gamers Nexus interviewed Kingpin about the 12VPHWR Connector: Jay may one of the few Burnproof RTX 4090's. Putting the Power connector on the Side of the Card has some Drawbacks, like bigger and long power Conduits, but is has one Bonus: It keeps the Powerconnector cooler, and EVGA has figured the Problem of the Overheating Powerconnector out: When it gets to warm it starts hotspotting and dies, moving it to the side keeps it cooler. The 12VPHWR has only a 10% reserve at 20°C which means at 45°C it runs out of Reserve and may start melting. Getting the Connector away from the Heatsource, like EVGA did, reduces the risk of burning Adapter. Kingping confirmed to Steve that EVGA new about the Risk and it looked cleaner.
@luminatrixfanfiction4 ай бұрын
EVGA also used 3 pin connectors on the pcb of the 3090 cards, which they would have used in the 4090's. Using 3 pin connectors instead of trying to shove all that dangerously high amps through a singular tiny fragile connector meant that all 3 pin connectors are sharing the load into one thirds. Ironically, EVGA would have swept the market for this series card because everyone would be clamouring for the only brand that had burnproof 4090 cards. Jay undoubtedly has one of the few burnproof cards in the world.

@@luminatrixfanfictionEVGA 3090 Ti’s have a 12VHP plug on the side of the GPU and they work just fine. I personally own one and know this to be fact so your statement is not factually correct. Mine came with an adapter which is a 3 PCIE into 1 12VHP angled connector that works just fine. Checked the temperature of the plug and the temperature is no different then a PCIE power plug so zero issues and not a thought ever enters my mind about it burning up. The ones that burn up are from user error. Not plugged in all the way, tension on the plug, XOC VBIOS being used that draw more current then the plug is rated at, using PSU’s that don’t provide enough current, etc. This notion that they will all burn up needs to end as it’s based on bad information then the internet ran with it blowing it out of proportion without including relevant details as to why some burned up. Regular user that has the plug seated properly with no 800 watt XOC VBIOS installed or any of the other factors I mentioned will never have a problem.
@luminatrixfanfiction4 ай бұрын
@@South_0f_Heaven_ Perhaps I meant the 3080's. You're not factually correct however, the ones burning up is not user error. That's been debunked multiple times. There's more than 50 amps being shoved through fragile connector cable and pin connectors that was rated for only a certain voltage and current. The theoretical limit is not the same as a real world application limit. They built it with 12VHP in mind based off the theoretical limit, not real world limit, not accounting for impurities in the copper wiring (which causes electrical resistance). That resistance directly translates to heat energy waste, hence the burning connectors. Ergo, a design fault. The 4090's which got fixed at Northridge, are going to continue needing to get it repaired and connectors replaced every six months. Also, your 3090 won't draw as much power compared to a 4090, so you won't have that issue.

Why not install an air filter unit of some sort for that work room? Would eliminate alot of those contaminants you spoke of.

If you think desert is bad, try the US south during pollen season. Any car color? Now yellow.

Did Jay just mention Space Engineers?! I love that game and play it constantly (like this morning). I am so geeked out - if I heard him right.

Yes, Jay and Phil are huge space and astronomy geeks, they talked about the game in some RTFM shows back then if I remember correctly

Paste looks okay, because you shouldn't use regular thermal paste on modern gpus. It's too liquid and cooler pumps it out in month or two. You should use at least commercial grade high-viscosity paste, but best option is phase change thermal paste. At room temps it is so hard that it comes in sheets like thermal pad. And it looks like these "old" and crumbled paste, but that's how it should look.

Evga should come back as everyone loved them. They should know we’d be willing to pay double like 4-6k enough for them to profit.

If you're just going to put it on the wall for decoration why would you feel bad if it stopped working 🤣

Definitely miss EVGA being around for GPU's. Very first GPU was the RTX 3060 XC 12GB and honestly don't know what to even go to after that :(

My computer is in my dusty office, about every 6 months I 'clean' it by blowing a 100 PSI from a garage compressor Open the casse, put my fingers into the fans to prevent them from freely spinning and blowing from up close takes 10 minutes for the whole computer and I 'm not about to invest a minuute more, it never affects performance either way

QUAL SAMPLE is Qualification Sample, not a Quality Sample The ones they use to design cards are ENG SAMPLE (or Engineering Sample) dies. QSs are actually semi-production ready dies that are nearly ready to hit the market, just to test if they don't cause anything wonky on edge cases (or even to test the hardware they're going to be connected to, e.g. QS CPUs to develop new motherboards, even when the retail version of that CPU is already out)
