Hey Brooke…. I use to raise Exotic Parrots in south Florida and although my cage environments were what seemed to be impenetrable I had a snake get to a nest and eat 3 eggs. I was told by an old friend to run a line of Garden Lime all along the exterior and interior of my aviary and around any post or sticks that came up from the ground. I did what they said and never had an egg disappear from that day forward. Snakes will not cross the Lime barrier because it will burn their skin. I had 5 aviaries with different types of parrots , lots of babies. I sold my breeding birds and moved north a few years back , miss my feathered friends.

I would put another camera up. Jason could build a little something over it to protect it from the weather. That way you will know. A game camera you can go back and look. I would put a game camera over by the emu eggs as well. Then you can keep a better lookout. So sorry Brooke I feel you were almost in tears.

6:49 brooke can you see the sticks in the middle of the nest are different coloured, my best guess is that they some how broke the egg intentionally or by accident and those sticks were covered in egg white thus the different colour sticks in that spot only and the female pigeon ate the egg shell n that's why u didn't find any egg shell.

Sorry for your loss. You should use the 14 days to relocate the Camera and possibly add another one. Also set up a system that will allow you to playback streams. Probably only need playback for 24 hours. If it was a snake it will most likely comeback to look for other eggs and streaming will allow you to look for it. The camera can be located in a three sided box that will protect it from the weather.

If it was a snake, it's still there & will be there until it's done digesting that egg & any other eggs that were in or outside of the coop. The snake might be hiding inside the coop area.

Hi Brooke, what is suggested on game cameras is to use a clear 2 liter bottle, remove all paper from it and install camera inside of a cut in half soda bottle to protect camera. You might be able to do something like that with your not weather proof camera. Good luck!

I’ve always been told that sulfur powder will deter snakes. My father in law used to sprinkle it around the outside of his house. Just a thought never hurts to try anything possible. Good luck. I’m so sorry the baby didn’t survive whatever did happen to it.

That's so sad. I know how much you were looking forward to having a Victoria Crown Pigeon baby. 😢 I think you're right, Brooke. It had to be a snake. My best guess is that it got in from the roof or failing that, from somewhere around the bottom of the container or maybe in came in through from the other side of the aviary and through the container??? A chicken snake (or rat snake) only needs a small diameter hole to get through and they are very efficient at crushing the eggs internally once swallowed. The good news is that Nugget is showing every sign that he intends to sit. So keep the faith!

Morning. Sorry to hear the VCP egg is gone. It’s a odd mystery, but the fact there’s no trace, it has to be a snake. It should still be there for a day or two while it digests... but if you can’t smell it, it must be gone. 🤔 I think Nugget is waiting for a sign Goldie is done... maybe she’ll start ‘hen-pecking’ him? 😅🤷‍♀️ I dunno though, she seems ever so sweet.
