Rational Cats rehearsing a New Orleans R&B song written by Dave Bartholomew and first recorded by Smiley Lewis in 1955.
While Bartholomew is credited, the song has documentation going back as far as 1928, when Bartholomew was ten years old and probably heard it back then. The version that he may have first heard was by James "Boodle It" Wiggins who recorded a piano piano blues in 1928 titled "Keep A Knockin' An You Can't Get In." Other similar songs that may have influences Bartolomew include "You Can't Come In", by Bert M. Mays, also in 1928; "Keep On Knocking", by Lil Johnson in 1935; "Keep a Knocking", by Milton Brown & His Brownies in 1936; and "Keep Knocking (But You Can't Come In)", by Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys in 1938.
