Finally... One of the greatest video game series. It makes me so happy that you are interested in the music of Like a Dragon (Yakuza). Thank you for your videos and your analyses.
@mahtijanis662111 ай бұрын
Please do Pledge of Demon and Oath of Enma from Yakuza 0 too; maybe as a two in one video. I feel they're one of those tracks that are elevated by context but even without knowing anything about Yakuza 0 story I'm sure you'll agree they're fantastic pieces. They're both recurring boss character's theme songs so you hear Pledge of Demon multiple times over the game until in the last encounter you're hit with Oath of Enma. I'd be really curious to hear a professional musician's thoughts on them.

There is so many bangers from RGG studios I think you'll like Viper and Unwavering belief from Lost Judgement, Viper could be considered a battle theme for a horror slasher villain and Unwavering belief is just fantastic, you should listen to the one by Random Collection "Lost Judgment OST - Good or Bad ~ Unwavering Belief" since the beginning adds a bit more depth

Love this track, and this analysis! Another personal favourite from the Yakuza 0 soundtrack is Customer Creed - not only does it have some great funk to it, but the fact that it actually plays diegetically really does a lot too in my opinion!

What’s cool about the battle themes is that they change depending upon what fighting style you’ve selected for Kiryu or Majima. Also, you were fairly close on the time period. 0 specifically takes place in the 80’s when Japan was economically at its strongest, the so-called “Bubble era”.

Yakuza music is iconic. Especially karaoke and disco songs. I advise to check out Friday Night (disco song), Bakamitai (karaoke) and 24 Hour Cinderella (karaoke) as these the most iconic from the series. Worth to note that Karaoke songs in Yakuza have special cinematics with characters that sing the songs. So if you can, you can try and find songs with visuals to have full experience that players also have when they first play the karaoke mini game in the series.

You should really see "Fly" from Yakuza 3, specifically IN-GAME version Even among the final themes in Yakuza series, that one REALLY stands out, it's got a mix of "there might have been another way, but this is how it must be now", before they get into the zone and completely lost in the rush of battle and then a slurry of emotions throw you around as guitar riffs kick in, and you can hear the two guitarist as if they're having an argument, one attempting to attune to and reach out to the other before crying out desperately, it's definitely worth listening to

This song, this absolute bop, only appears as battle music in a particular side quest line. It has a sibling, Trouble Shooting Star, that also only appears in a particular side quest line. It is more archetypical of a battle theme but equally a bop, maybe even moreso depending who you ask. Also worth listening to the whole thing (the actual song is only 2.5 minutes long and has a killer and clean ending)

@shinigamimiroku372311 ай бұрын
Oh, you're definitely right about battle themes not needing to be absolutely serious. This is one of the reasons why "Reach Out To the Truth," from Persona 4, is one of my favorite battle themes - It's very peppy, very positive, yet still has that fast pace that makes you want to give every battle your all. Makes it stand out against Persona 3's and 5's battle tracks, which are much more serious in nature.
@Naucks11 ай бұрын
What I love is that this is a game about the fun and joy of fighting. To the yakuza in this game, fighting is a way to settle anything, either winning to prove a point or fighting for the hell of it. But every time, there is that feeling, that you MUST win, or you just want to. It is only in the serious fights where the fight takes a backseat to the musical story, but even there it is fast, it is fun, and it is most definitely Yakuza.

Awesome that you've started the dive into Yakuza's music with this piece, Marco! Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing you react to both Kiryus and Majimas battle themes in Yakuza 0, maybe as four-in-ones, considering both characters have 4 distinct regular battle themes depending on their fighting style in the moment. (Force/Rush/Crash) Addiction + Receive You Tech Trance One-Eyed (Assassin/Slugger/Dancer) + Receive You The Subtype

Battle themes in video games can vary a lot. Some are more tragic and powerfully emotional like Other Promise and Vector to the Heavens from the Kingdom Hearts series, some create a sense of hollowness and long lost glory like Gwyn's theme from Dark Souls, some are minimalistic and slightly off-putting like Fool's Idol from Demon's Souls and Battle B3 from Shin Megami Tensei IV, and some just wish to invoke a visceral sense of otherworldly terror like Pulse and anxiety from Fear & Hunger.

Some that I like are Ideal for Violence, Customer Creed, Rocket Nuts Groove, Outlaw's Lullaby and My Own Style. I find Encounter from Judgment pretty interesting too, like it feels too chill for a boss theme lol, but it's nice. Anyway, I'm glad to see you reacting to Yakuza music.
