Percy Jackson And The Olympians: The Lightning Thief Movie Description:
Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief is a story about a troubled young boy who finds out his father is a Greek god, making him a demigod. He and his friends are given the task of finding and returning Zeus's lightning bolt as monsters from the Underworld attempt to stop them.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (also known as Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief) is a 2010 American action fantasy film directed by Chris Columbus and written by Craig Titley, based on the 2005 novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. The film is the first installment in the Percy Jackson film series. It stars Logan Lerman as Percy Jackson alongside an ensemble cast that includes Brandon T. Jackson, Alexandra Daddario, Sean Bean, Pierce Brosnan, Steve Coogan, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Kevin McKidd, Joe Pantoliano, and Uma Thurman.
In 2004 20th Century Fox acquired the film rights to the book series. In 2007 Chris Columbus was hired to direct. Filming began April 2009 in Vancouver. Some shots were filmed in Tennessee and Las Vegas, and some exterior scenes were shot in New York.
Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief was released theatrically in the United States on February 12, 2010, by 20th Century Fox. The film received mixed reviews from critics, with criticism for the poor grasp of its source material and its script, but praise for Lerman and Jackson's performances, visual effects, and action sequences. The film grossed $226.4 million worldwide against a production budget of $95 million. It was released on June 29, 2010 on DVD and Blu-ray Disc. A video game based on the film was released for Nintendo DS on February 11, 2010. A sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, was released on August 7, 2013.

I enjoyed the books at the time it was published there was a bunch of high teen fantasy stuff, (teen angst and fights) not a lot of it was mythology based so the books were a bit unique as a series. Almost like old school myths and badassery mixed with modern themes but staying close to the battle/myth stuff over it’s just a teen flick. The movies felt extremely done for modern audiences and edited for more general audiences. The feeling of myths and significance sort of got washed out as ‘ya some superpower shit’ and like more room for the teen drama stuff and teen highschool drama tropes. - I think the effects are good and the movie is watchable but it has a totally different feel to the books and a very different set of events/setup for events which is just lost in the movies. Pacing and reveals are very different. You can read about a monsterous creature and have build up for them and it’s different and more significant then seeing a cgi creature on scene with little background info besides ‘it looks intense and scary like a mythical monster’

Heyyy, another PJO fan here ! Just to explain why the fanbase hates the movies : they are so much different from the original story that they kinda become an insult to the books. The cast made an amazing job with the script they were given, it's the crew behind the script that we resent. Just so you know, when Rick Riordan (the books' author) got the script, he sent a 20 pages-long explanation to the crew of what was wrong or simply didn't make any sense, what the crew changed from the book and therefore ruined, and how they could make it better. He even offered to help them improve the script, even though he was writing his next book, and the crew just ignored him. As a kid, I really enjoyed the movie and didn't associate it with the book (because I could never remember the movie's name, but that's another problem) so I didn't see any problem, but I rewatched it as a young adult and I realized 1) how some parts of the plot make no sense (you mentionned some of those elements in your reaction btw) and 2) how they literally made another story using the same characters' names. So yeah, if you watch the movies without any knowledge of the books, they're not THAT bad ; but if you know the books and compare them, then they are horrendous (for example, they changed a lot of things in the MC's personalities and they butchered Grover's character, and yes I am still mad about it). Now the series has only released 3-4 episodes yet and I am already feeling like I'm watching the characters that I've read about for years, even though then made some slight modifications : it's strange how an adaption can actually be called a good/faithful adaptation when the author has a say in it. 🙂

I watched the first movie, then read all the books and still liked the books better. The movies do have a lot of good qualities but they could be so much better. They just changed a lot of details in the plot, and eliminated so many good parts. Each book could be made into a mini-series.

The main major issue with the movies is that they changed the character ages and therefore had to change the plot. The characters are twelve in the books and therefore don't have access to cars. They're assigned a quest to get the bolt from Hades and return it to Olympus. There wasn’t a quest to find pearls. The characters just got into situations because of traveling delays. Many more minor issues but those are the major ones.

26:18 so glad you asked, avid percy jackson fan here. the movies are fine on their own-not great, but fine, sure-but they are remarkably, astoundingly unlike the books. for example: in the books, the hydra fight in nashville never happened, the characters were all aged 12, the relationships between gods and their children were much more nuanced and interesting, plot twists at the end were better set up and executed, the comedy was substantially funnier, the characters were more compelling,,, i could go on. the books were really good, so to see these mid movies with all the good stuff from the books taken out… it hurt our feeling fs 😂 luckily the show’s a LOT better, i hope you react to it!!!!

when i was young before I even read the books, this was one of my favorite movies as I was a greek mythology fan as a child. However, when I finally read the books years later was when I realized how incredibly inaccurate the movies were to the books. Good thing the new series is staying faithful to the events in the book despite the creative liberty changes they added and changed entirely. The new cast in the series definitely embodied the characters very well, definitely a good casting choice from both the director and the author himself.

I love that 'great casting' was one of your first reactions since the casting was one of the biggest issues of the movie. Basically the point why the book fans hate it is because Percy and Annabeth are supposed to be 12 year olds and the plot was altered SO much from the books. Originally Percy is a twelve year old kid who has ADHD and dyslexia and daydreams a lot, some of the reasons for which he gets bullied, mainly by Nancy Bobofit (a character the movies completely left out). He gets kicked out of school and Grover and him eventually end up going to Camp Half-Blood where Percy is assigned a quest by the Oracle (another character that was left out). And by the time he arrives, no one knows that his father is Poseidon. He only gets claimed a little later on before being assigned the quest. They go on the quest (which is almost completely different from the movies) and so on so on. Some other important characters they left out were Clarisse LaRue who is the daughter of Ares and who bullies Percy at the camp, Ares who is like a literal main character and so many monsters like the Fates. If you want a well done adaptation I'd say go and watch the show. Also, the camp is just completely different. Now, I did find the movies before the books so I find it easier to separate the two, but another part for the hate towards the movie is how the director/producers treated Rick Riordan, the author. After Riordan read the script he offered to help them out because it just was nothing like his books and they basically told him they didn't care about his opinion and did the movie how they wanted regardless of his opinion.

@@eline_van_dijk Well, My main problem as Most PJO Fans saying -- ANNABETH (Or Anna-Black-Beth) What makes me mad is that Rick takes so much time in the books to talk about Annabeth's appearance because Percy values it and Annabeth uses it as a strength. Percy dismisses her early thinking that she's a dumb blonde, but is quickly corrected by her strength and intelligence. Annabeth also notes in the Heroes of Olympus series that the 7 demigods probably don't take her as seriously as the boys because of her blonde hair, but she is respected even more so than Jason because of her intelligence, grace under pressure and strategic strength; she's a true leader to them all. Riordan even mentions several times in the books how all the children of Athena look like Annabeth too with blonde hair and grey eyes. Are all the siblings going to be black now? Is the goddess Athena herself going to be black now? News flash, Greeks are white. What I think is just the biggest let down of all is that Rick condemned Fox for changing the age and entire story of his characters in the original fuck up movie, it was important that what was in his books was honoured. I just feel so sick at the fact that he's a hypocrite now. Fox bent to the idea that people would only watch the movie if the characters were older and 'sexed up', just as Rick described them. Now he's following the same philosophy, going with 'the times' or whatever this is and changing the race to be more fashionable. It's just lazy casting and unfair to the actor who I think would have been an amazing Hazel, a character in the book who is very similar to Annabeth, who in fact idolises her and is AFRICAN AMERICAN. Rick says he wasn't able to write characters back then who were of other races, absolute bullshit. Beckendorf was black, a character who brought everyone together in the final book for the war and who Percy highly respected and honoured. Hazel was black, one of my favourite characters in the Heroes of Olympus series. Piper is Cherokee and goes against every stereotype thrown her way, a truely strong woman. Frank is Chinese and is arguably one of the most powerful demigods we ever meet. It's just all a lie. Rick knows the strength in his characters and how they should be portrayed, he repeats in all his books how every character looks and how they become so much more, this is just unfair to a talented actor who should have gotten an original movie, not some established character they hastily painted black for appeasement.

Differences from the book to the movie: - Annabeth is blonde with grey eyes - Percy had to be claimed by Poseidon, so he originally lived in the Hermes cabin with Luke, who is a son of Hermes. The Hermes cabin is used for demigods who haven't been claimed yet because he's a god of travelers (and thieves) - The underworld has *never* been described as hot and full of fire. There are a few rivers in the underworld and Persephone even has a garden down there. - Percy originally sent the head of Medusa to the gods, but the gods returned it to him so he uses it to aid in the murder of his stepdad - Percy originally left behind his mother, not Grover. - The oracle of Delphi gave a prophecy for the quest to happen. - "Their world" is just *the* world. The gods resign in the US (specifically New York) - Athena cabin was on Percy's side, he was supposed to be the defender of the flag but got ambushed by the Ares cabin. He did get healed by the lake, but only because Annabeth pushed him in it to heal him. He was claimed by Poseidon then. - Hades never showed up to camp, but he has been sending the three Furies to hunt him down so he can return the bolt - Luke gave him flying shoes in the hopes he would get dragged into Tartarus (where all the monsters come from). Percy gave Grover the flying shoe though, since flying isn't good for a child of the sea god (The sky is Zeus's domain, so he had every right to zap him out of the sky) - They ran out of time originally and had to fly in an airplane to return the bolt on time. - Luke, seeing that Percy came back safely, used a scorpion to kill him with venom in the forest, but it failed because he managed to get back to camp in time to survive - Percy fought Ares after escaping the underworld - Poseidon gave Percy the three pearls, he didn't have to hunt for them - they had to do a fetch quest for Ares to get back an item he lost while on a date with Aphrodite. Because they retrieved the item he lost, Ares gave them a means of transportation to get to LA in time - Poseidon can't speak to him like this. Percy figured out the Lotus scam on his own and had to beg Annabeth and Grover to leave - Charon (the underworld guide) only granted them passage because they promised they would ask Hades to give him a raise - Percy had to fight a Hellhound after the Capture the Flag game in the beginning - It was the summer. Persephone wasn't in the underworld. She is only in the underworld during winter and autumn, not spring and summer. It describes the changing of seasons. Demeter hates when Persephone is gone, so plants wither and die in her absence

I like the movies as their stand alone, disconnected from the books as I watched the movies before I read the books. My biggest grip with the movies is it doesn't stay faithful to the books in any sort of way. They changed the entire plot of the movie, changed the characters and personalities to almost unrecognizable, and then altered the entire course of the books. As there is a reason for the ages in the books, of Percy starting off as 12 in the books, and ending as a 16th year old in the very last book. Making percy 16 alters things towards plot progression, and then they made the characters dull and way less interesting than in the books. While changing the story towards a story of hide & go seek for the pearls, while in the books they weren't that relevant and instead given as a gift. The books were more about a 12 year old being forced on a quest while learning the dangers of new world with his friends. They got rid of any depth towards the characters and the initial charm of the books, as you explore the world with percy. While percy in the books is witty, funny and loyal, they made him a blank slate, boring & unintresting. Annabeth, while smart and tactical, she was also a kid, that was stubborn, and funny, and just wants the acknowledgement from her mom. Grover, is an anxious, and funny, who just wants everything to go smoothly and get along If you want to watch a more faithful adaption, so far the series on Disney Plus is doing a pretty good job, although still nervous. The movies are fine in their own right, but not when being an adaptation of the books. They don't show the humor, or the plot or anything really that makes the books great, of what their regarded as.

If you've never read the books, the movies are enjoyable. But if you have the context, you know how much is changed and how different it is. From ages of characters, the villans, even the plot. Lots of little things that do matter. The second movie got even more wrong. The 2 most accurate things in the movies was smelly gabe, and a scene that was cut of annabeth calling percy seaweed brain.

At least its not as bad as the Avatar treatment. They could be calling percy "pair sea" and it take 5 people to move a drop of water

As someone who hasn't read the books, I love the Percy Jackson's movies. I can understand the hate because it's not like the books but as people say, If you think about the movies as their own thing, you'll enjoy them. I've never read any book thats had a movie adaptation but I have seen all the movies based on books, and I love them lol.

Poseidon and Medusa slept together pre-snakes. It’s the reason she got snakified and the reason Athena hates Poseidon - they did the deed in Athena’s temple, which was blasphemous, so Athena cursed Medusa as revenge. Anyway, these movies are… not great. Thankfully the Disney+ series seems to be much better so far! You should check it out!

Percy, Annabeth, and Luke are probably three of THE best fighters of the age. Percy and Luke were said to be the best swordsmen in the world, about equal, while Annabeth uses a knife, but is probably the best in overall combat. There is one character who shows up in the sequel series who might be able to give her a run for it, but it would not be easy.

7:33 Grover fills the inside of his shoes with Styrofoam, leaving just enough space for his foot. They fall off regularly, this is a plot point.

A big reason i hated this movie was when i saw it as a kid i was smart enough to know about the mythology and the rape that led to Medusas curse and it makes the way the rewrote the story very weird. Plus knowing the gods half the kids at the camp would be children of rape minus Hades kids

Man, they mess up with Hades so much in this movie. The characters are also nothing like their book version (personality’s wise), and they changed some key elements of the plot. As a movie, is not that bad but as an adaptation is honestly insulting. Even worse is that they did a scene by the book in the trailers… and then didn’t use it.

People in the fandom often identify with a certain godly parent, there are many quizzes online. Of the twenty that currently have cabins in Camp Half-blood, (really eighteen, because Hera and Artemis don't have demigod offspring,) I'm a child of Iris.
