Interesting to see the experts' strategy (especially pillars and key audiences) didn't resonate or feel like you at all. I don't watch you because you're a mum or an OG KZbinr, I watch because you're a sunshine aesthetic, realistic, organised creative.

Honestly Hannah, I love your content particularly because your "hooks" and thumbnails and video titles are not so cheesy or exaggerated. I don't know why, might be a trust thing - you never promise more than you deliver and I think in terms of building community this reliability is great. But what do I know, I'm just a consumer 😅

I think what sets you apart from the way you described those other mum TikTok creators is maybe less of a focus on consumption, and more about thrifting, and more efficient solutions of how to reuse what you already have. Like the home renovation, shopping your closet. That’s what I find very appealing about your channel, it makes me feel less like needing to go out and buy things. I also like your content to help me think about whether I want to be a parent and prepare for the realities of becoming a parent. And your willingness to share things that are really helpful to understand body stuff (like the hormone diaries) and friendships as a parent. I also like how you are willing to make changes and take us along for the ride, which helps when I would go through a similar thing (birth control, getting pregnant, moving house or not, preparing for a kid, changing career paths). You’re very open and have a healthy mindset about a lot of things. I’ve shared your videos with educators in midwifery for example, because you give that perspective that they should be aware of. And life admin! So good! But I only watch shorts on YT haha so I’m probably not the audience you’re looking for. Just my thoughts about your content pillars.

Ok I was thinking about short-form Hannah content I would like and this is it! Like taking us along for the ride of being a relatable, millennial woman. Especially with parenting, it feels so comforting to watch someone show the realities of motherhood without skewing either super negative or toxicly-postive/my-child-is-my-life and it's all I think about.

Interesting that you say you hate having to do the video hooks, because I don’t like them as a consumer. I know it’s the name of the game these days but I don’t like how manufactured social media has become, that videos have to have a clickbait title or sensationalist tease to perform well, because we can tell they’re clickbait and it actually puts me off engaging with some content because I’m suspicious that it’s not going to be what it seems, or makes it feel like life has to always have drama when actually I just want to hang out with you for a 90 minute video. I like following people like you on Instagram and KZbin because it feels like I’m hanging out with them and following what they’re up to, it seems more personal and like I’m more connected to them. I don’t feel the need to use TikTok, it feels like a space for other people (usually younger than me!)

Hi Hannah, I'm half way and I have some comments as a millennial and being a subscriber since 2020. I think that tik tok relies too much on stereotypes or "tropes", I'm not a "mum" nor "I'm-a-wannabe-influencer", I'm a soon to be 33 year old married, non binary person that does not want to be a parent. I started following you, both channels, because I'm a nerdy millennial that loves learning. I loved learning about sex and relationships from your OG channel and I love learning about your life and style from this channel. Personally, I love following different youtuber to learn different perspectives. For me, you being a mum is part of you, not "your brand". I started following you before Rowan and I'm still following with Rowan in your life. I started following you mainly from the sex and relationship content, but I continue watching you, and following you on instagram as I believe you are very reliable, even though we're 2 very different people. I think that youtube is more nuanced, and that's what I love about this platform, and why I do not have a tik tok account. Hope this makes sense :)

This was fascinating to watch. Some of the exact advise for Tik Tok success were the very things that turn me off that type of content (the teasing of the hook for a shocking reveal, the switch from "I" language to "you" language to frame the narrative, etc.). I think I might officially be getting old! 😂

I have a suggestion: why don’t you use reels to find creator clients for your new business? I personally found those niches quite limiting and not very you. You’re not just a mum or an OG KZbinr with shocking stories - you have content creation expertise. I feel like you’d thrive in content creator education, speaking about Patreon strategies, organising a creator business, the financial stuff - not only is it useful for potential clients, it’s also super interesting for a layman outsider. Then the goal would be a bit more tangible and would justify the time spent, as it’s a way to attract new clients. Plus it'd solidify your new niche as a creator consultant. Instagram, as your mentors pointed out, is a great tool to connect audiences to your external business.
@KalishkaRuby
@KalishkaRuby 3 күн бұрын
@herrengelsful Yes that is what’s really interesting to me as an outsider! I have no interest in creating content but I enjoy watching ‘behind the scenes’ of it. Just like I love watching authors’ videos but have no desire to write a book 😂 I think they get confused by their audience sometimes as it’s addressed as if I’m a writer too, but I’m just a reader who is nerdy and interested in the practicalities and business side 🤓

I could see you using stats based hooks! Like “50% of moms feel guilt for doing hobbies outside the house” (obviously made up) but I think your education background makes that feel very aligned for you while still catching attention!

As a TT regular, i really dislike the cringey hooks and typically scroll away. I've found myself in a corner over on TT where there are hooks, but it piques curiosity rather than making some bold cringe statement. Maybe finding accounts that you enjoy over there to see other styles of hooks that dont make you cringe.

Watching this and being someone who watches a lot of tiktok I'm so interested in which creators they picked as your competitors. I don't see you being in momtok. You are more a creator that just happens to be a mom. When you first mentioned competitors it made me think of others I watch that occasionally make mom content but that's not their main thing.

For me it was particularly interesting to hear your perspective as someone who already creates content regularly and has been in this flow of “ok, we have a schedule, what do we film” and not someone who (like me) only filmed videos while feeling “inspired”. Somehow validates that coming up with genuine themes for short form content and then making even 3 per week is like so hard lol

I don't have TikTok and only consume short-form content on IG but I just wanted to say that I love cosy videos about normal life. Elyse Myers springs to mind as a creator who often makes slow-paced, gentle videos that feel to me a like a bit of an oasis in the fast-pace social media of today. I know that it may not be the most popular style of content on TikTok but I think there's definitely a place for it!

I feel like a safer (less personal) TikTok strategy would be book related. You have read so many fiction and non-fiction sex/relationship books that we never get to hear much about now that the banging book club is gone and your current Bookclub is behind a pay wall. You could make short form videos pulling out interesting topics and discussions from books you’ve read. And you could throw in the odd fantasy read for fun too. BookTok and BookTube are so big!!

As a new-ish viewer (about a year perhaps?), what drew me to your content and made me stick was how unclicbaity it is. Your titles are always very transparent, and I know what to expect from the video when I read them. And they videos always so fun to watch! I can tell you have lots of fun making them, and it seems like you're doing things because you enjoy them and want to do them without focusing 100% on how the "content" will perform. I also love that you come across as very professional and very protective of your personal life, and are very clear about the boundaries you set and why.

TikTok to me definitely feels like the “junk food” of social media - easy to digest, fun in small bits. I watch you for your perspective on life and because you often leave room for nuance, which neither feels like it would do well on TikTok nor is something I would go to TikTok to seek out.

I’m not a parent and have a different fashion sense so those aspects don’t appeal to me personally, but I find the OG KZbinr angle interesting ☺️ I’m so glad that you’ve come to the conclusion that it’s what makes YOU happy that matters. I'm only twenty minutes into the video but I just really wanted to comment about the pillars and the audience thing. I don't really fit into either of the personas but I feel like there's no way I'm the only person who watches you now as a positive parenting example?? I started following the channel (channels, rather) long time ago, pre Dan I think, but these day one of the main things that draws me in at the moment is the parenting stuff. I feel like watching your videos made parenting seem less like an unknown scary thing and more like a realistically still scary and difficult but also manageable and more real thing? I feel like when it comes to parenting, you're one of my main role models. Not in a 'oh you're a perfect parent, I have to copy your every move, share YOUR PARENTING SECRETS Hannah' way but in a 'oh she seems cool, if I were a parent, hopefully that would be my vibe' way. And I actually enjoy other aspects of your content as well (productivity, fashion, etc.) so there's the synergy of everything at work as well. Anyway, hope all of that makes some kind of sense 😅

Little tip for shortening your tiktoks, you could do stories in part 1234 series which can also be tabbed at the top of your page for easy access like highlights but it's just a title no circle picture! I completely failed as a regular 26 yr old with no intention to grow trying to make a Tiktok thinking that I had to be fast in real life as the videos I saw were- forgetting editing is a thing-but also terrifying! So it's always good to be yourself and give yourself some pointers to stick topic the rest can be edited! 💗

I feel like the conclusion of "do what makes you happy" should've come out of the meetings with them earlier. Every update you gave was about how you are uncomfortable with all these hooks that they were suggesting, but they kept pushing on with them pretty much until the very end of the process. Maybe they wanted to see if you'd eventually get on board with it and that's why they kept pushing? 🤷

Only just began watching, but wanted to answer the question what I get out of watching you: it's like catching up with a friend. I regularly do chores like dishes (which I hate!) and it is great to have a sort of stand in for a friend who is chatting to you, but not physically there to judge whatever mess I might have created in my house. It helps get chores done and feels like I've hung out with a friend. So yeah, that's why!

Have you thought about with instagram that the age and time on social media might mean that they’re disengaging from social media more and some of that is affecting your engagement too? Not sure if I said that well, but I’ve basically stopped using instagram never going on TikTok or Facebook because it’s just too much but I love KZbin as a form of tv. So it’s not you it’s the platform

The thing i dont like about social media is the way we sort of have to fit into a certain box and only post content that fits in a certain genre. We're all multifaceted, and our socials should be a reflection of that, but people often follow for a particular topic, so you cant be successful without doing a lot of that topic...

I totally relate to what you say about not wanting to have 'hooks' or exaggerated thumbnails etc. I've been making KZbin videos for over 8 years and still have less than 200 subscribers and I know that I could grow much more if I made my thumbnails/titles/videos more exciting but that's not what I'm about! Just hoping that at some point being me will be enough to get noticed 😅

Hello. I work in Brand and Copy in the U.S. Thanks for the video. I love marketing related content and am an organization and data lover. A way to improve your hooks and titles without making them feel over dramatic is to identify attention-grabbing words you naturally use/used in the specific video to help create the hook/title. That way it's attention grabbing without being inauthentic. It's also, in my opinion, less tiring because you're taking words you've already used and reworking them. Some words from your description/video, for example, that could be good: terrified, fear, expert, scary, 8 week, rollercoaster, glory, experiment Hope this is in anyway helpful for you or others reading. *Some Ideas* I Didn't Have to Be Afraid of TikTok/You Don't Have to Be Afraid of TikTok Getting Over My Fear of TikTok/Get Over Your Fear of TikTok TikTok Isn't That Scary After All My 8 Week TikTok Rollercoaster

These still feel super clickbaity to me and don't tell me what the video is actually about, and I would not click on them. On the other hand, the actual title of this video makes it super clear what it's about, and then I'm like "oh, this is interesting, let's sit down and watch this". Not to diss on you, just my 2 cents and a different persective 👍

@@mac8697 Thank you for sharing your opinion. I don't think this video is one that I'd say has a weak title. It's definitely interesting thinking about the idea of a good headline and what that means. What it suggests about what you're asking the audience to do. I spend a good deal of time lately wondering how work in marketing conflicts and overlaps with my love for community. How much marketing is used as a tool to inspire people to consume and purchase rather than understand and connect.

I absolutely loved this! 🐌It was fascinating to see the behind the scenes of this process and all of your thoughts and feelings about social media along the way. I kinda hate the pressure I feel to use social media as a writer and journalist to promote myself, network with editors, etc., even though I also find photography/posting on Instagram a fun way to express myself and my emotions in a playful/non-perfectionist way?

It’s interesting that you made the comparison between your “competitors” and who you’d like to be friends with because I truly think community and audience comes from parasocial relationships with people you would actually get along with in real life. I’ve watched lots of creators over the years but the people I come back to a thousand times are yourself, Mel, Leena, Jen Campbell, and Ariel. When I started watching you guys I had no idea you knew each other and also got along in real life! The content I liked seemed to be less content driven and more authenticity driven. Tldr; stay true to your authentic personality, that’s what people stay for.

🐌 I’ve been so curious about TikTok and how it works! My previous job required their employees to sign a document during the pandemic saying we would not use it on our work and personal devices (we all had to hold secret clearances for government work). The whole thing around privacy seems kind of iffy with that app… but I’m still curious about what all the hype is, and now that I have a different kind of job, maybe I should try it out. I also think the chances of it being banned in the US are kind of high. We’ll see…. 😕

Oh and, I was watching a YT about the US tiktok situ. Breanne Elyse is a content creator for her design business and is a qualified lawyer. Basically, if Tiktok were to not find an American buyer the whole process of getting them completely banned from the US, after appeals, courts, legal processes etc would take several years possibly not until 2026/27. So there is still a point to making content on there, but equally worth posting over multiple platforms so not all eggs are in one basket (which isn't a problem for you!)

I have to be honest that a lot of creators that i follow on insta, i actually block on tik tok bc i end up seeing their videos twice and i hate it. This does include you hannah, other youtubers, and also digital artists and print makers. I understand the logic of cross posting from a creator pov, but it de- incentivises genuine followers like myself bc there is no difference in the posts across platforms for the consumer.

It’s very interesting what you’re saying about being less interested in growing your audience and more interested in deepening connections within your existing community. If you want a role model of KZbinrs who have very consciously and successfully pursued that, I’d recommend looking at, and potentially speaking to, Hank and John Green

Very interesting project, although it seems like a potentially very stressful hamster wheel to mine your brain and life for ideas a few times a week 😮‍💨! I used tiktok daily for two years from 2021 to 2023. I decided to quit cold turkey last summer because I realized that it was a soothing mechanism for me in the evenings after stressful work days. I ended up going on burnout sick leave that autumn. After that experience I'm appreciating "slow" content so much more and actually have the energy and attention span for it. Anyway, not sure why I shared this, but I guess just to say that the "old school" KZbin rambliness still has an audience, haha ❤

Sincere comment from a relatively new follower: all the OG talk is not the most interesting thing about you and often makes me zone out or scroll past. Whenever consuming content by creators who keep mentioning that they are OG it makes me feel like screaming I GET IT. It also comes over strongly that you don't value Tiktok for what it is, so why should 'my' Tiktok time be spent on you? I'd rather follow you where it's clear you care about the platform (insta and YT).

I have actually started avoiding titles that are too catchy even here on yt...they never deliver and i feel disappointed about wasting my time. Honestly the hooks like "you can't believe what just happened" etc yes they do catch and retain attention for a while but after a few of these videos it becomes so tiring and annoying because nothing really is as interesting as teezed to be ...so I find them just tiring and annoying. I also don't have tiktok cause I cannot control myself with it, i struggle to stop scrolling once i start. So i'm glad when my fav creators publish the same videos on instagram as well. I love your cozy content here ❤

Adding my vote to the "am less likely to engage with drama-hook titles" but then I'm not a short-form consumer either; Even for KZbin videos though, hook titles with too much drama always make me feel like I'm going to be swindled and waste my time. So if I don't ALREADY know and trust the creator, I won't find a new one this way because my chances of clicking are so low. Of course some level of drama that describes the actual theme of the video can be good, but it still has to *describe what I am getting*, so the exaggerated bait style just automatically makes me not want to give the video my clicks - if I have to actually GUESS what the video is about I'm far less likely to click at this point because I know by now that usually it's just a waste of my time as opposed to someone who just says what they mean :') P.S. As far as "you-centered" language I find it really depends. I cannot stand the "you're doing X wrong!" type titles they're like callouts for things I don't need to be called out for, whereas if someone said "I was doing X wrong this whole time!" I might click on it because they aren't making an assumption about me as the viewer LOL. But this is probably a very Millenial way to think :(

Okay, 2nd comment. I think you underestimate how much *confidence* is your brand/niche. That would be scooped up by TikTok, I think? P.S. I don't even have TikTok and am much older than you, so I don't know what I am talking about really.
