Has a guitar solo ever captured the emotion of a song more viscerally and put you right into the head and heart of the narrator? A buzzsaw that just eviscerates it's audience - damn, Bruce. Damn.

Sting may have written this, but Bruce owns it, lock, stock, and barrel. Bruce’s version is a lot more gritty than Sting’s. The desperation, self-loathing, remorse, and resignation in Bruce’s voice cuts to the bone.

Listened to 3 versions now after discovering this song. By Sting, Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash. All artists that I like. Ironically, although he wrote it, Stings version isn't as good as the other 2, but Johnny Cash's is the best of the 3 in my opinion.

I only ever knew this as a Johnny Cash song, and I assumed it was written by some dusty old balladeer from west of the Pecos. Then I stumble across this version by Bruce and I find out that it was actually written by a man from Nothumberland. Having listened to all three versions, Sting, Johnny and Bruce, I would say that Sting's is great, Johnny's is superb and Bruce's is a masterpiece. The song is made for Bruce, and I know some people don't like the guitar solo but I love it.
@gustavotozzo4 жыл бұрын
That guitar solo IS the unspoken part of the anguish the lead role feels throughout the entire song.... there's pain, anguish, rage for a deed that should not have taken place.... I have heard this version of Bruce many times, and every time he does it it adds a different layer of pain to it. One exuberant artist and story teller. Hat off to him... I am enthralled by the way he performs this song. Totally agree with you, it is a masterpiece!

The silences before the chorus - which I don't believe are in Sting's original - are heartbreaking. They only go on for a measure or so, but it seems Bruce could hold them as long as he wanted. His version of this character makes me weep.

I think he gets overlooked because when he is with the ESB, Nils and Stevie are the ones who really get to show their talent. Relieves him and frees him up to be all over the place on stage, in the crowd, goofing, dancing, etc... He does seem to really enjoy the times when he has a chance to show his skills.
@TheKlauscat3 жыл бұрын
True. He’s said that he knew that he was a good guitarist, but not great. He also said he wasn’t the best singer, so he knew his songwriting will be the thing that distinguishes him from most. I would say that what he didn’t say, and that his front man stage presence, passion, charm, and ability to bring a sense of communal experience with his audience is second to none!

I could hear this one over and over... Bruce is just great! What I also love very much is that there's David Sancious at the Piano. He has worked with Sting for years, but he is also one of the original members of the E Street Band! They actually got the name because of the street where David (beeing only 16 at the time) lived with his mother. They recorded the first two albums together. David and drummer Ernest Carter left the band in 1975 for the opportunity of a solo carreer - after recording Born to run☺.

*LYRICS-LYRICS-LYRICS* *Early one morning With time to kill I borrowed Jebb's rifle And sat on the hill I saw a lone rider Crossing the plain I drew a bead on him To practise my aim My brother's rifle Went off in my hand A shot rang out Across the land The horse, he kept running The rider was dead I hung my head I hung my head I set off running To wake from the dream My brother's rifle Went into the stream I kept on running Into the salt lands That's where they found me My head in my hands The sheriff he asked me "Why had I run?" And then it came to me Just what I had done And all for no reason Just one piece of lead I hung my head I hung my head I hung me head I hung my head Here in the court house The whole town was there I see the judge High up in his chair "Explain to the courtroom What went through your mind. And we'll ask the jury What verdict they find." I felt the power Of death over life I orphaned his children I widowed his wife I ask no forgiveness I wish I was dead I hung my head I hung my head I hung my head I hung my head *Early one morning With time to kill I see the gallows Upon a hill And out in the distance A trick of the brain I see a lone rider Crossing the plain* *And he'd come to fetch me To see what they'd done And we'd ride together To Kingdom come I ask for no mercy For soon I'd be dead I hung my head I hung my head* *I hung my head I hung my head I hung my head I hung my head*

Does anyone else interpret the long build up at the end as the man waiting in the noose before they finally drop him? The buildup is him becoming more and more scared before the bottom finally falls out below his feet. Jesus, I can't listen to the last verse without my hair standing up. It's so fucking powerful.
@glennhenson6495 Жыл бұрын
That's interesting because I interpret the buildup as the man wanting it to be over, not fear but frustration at it taking so long. But yeah your right no matter how interpret, it is powerful.

Art is a light in the darkness. Bruce art is always shining and in my opinion the choice of this Johnny Cash is brilliant and up to date. The more Weapons are easy to be "borrowed" by anyone and the higher is the risk for a " solitary horse rider in the plain". Music can't save te world but sure helps people to better understand its problems.
@lorddaver19357 жыл бұрын
Dr Yellow blues band etc. What do you mean "the choice of this Johnny Cash..."??? Although Johnny Cash sang a cover version, the song was written by Sting. For that reason, it was perfectly appropriate for Bruce to sing this song at this gig - Sting's 60th birthday bash.

Nice cover by Springsteen, real gritty. I imagine the late great Johnny Cash wished he could have sang it with this vibe which he would have done in his earlier years. His voice just wasn't up to it which is a shame. People love it anyway because he's a legend. Sting's version is excellent, it's hard sing a narrative and he does it. Also I find it so ironic people saying Sting is pretentious and puerile because it simply demonstrates they haven't heard his catalogue of music since the mid 70s. He''s wrote plenty of world class tunes and his Blue Turtles where the only band to cover Hendrix with imagination and class. Plus the lone rider had just posted a comment on KZbin about Sting being pretentious.
