I actually tinkered around with Android x86 a bit on my old Acer Aspire 4330 back in 2013 or so, when the then-current build was still based on Android 4.4. It was neat, and ran amazingly smoothly and fast) quickly on my aging laptop, but I found it largely unfit for daily use, and instead ended up breathing new life into that old machine with Linux Mint. I'm glad to see they're still working on the project though, and have updated it to more modern variants of Android. 👍

It's actually already out (q-x86 developer branch was made available in November of last year). Right now it is mainly for developers, and you have to build it yourself from the source. There are other custom Android x86 distros like BlissOS that offer ISOs based off of Android 10 if you don't want to build from source.

@ultrademigod
@ultrademigod 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm not sure why you would recommend doing this at all, as it seems like a fairly extreme measure to take when there are so many other steps to take first. The OS is almost never the cause of slowdown with older hardware, and assuming the CPU is working properly and isn't a single or dual core processor it never is. The most likely cause of slowdown is a full or failing HDD, followed by a virus.

It was an issue with the failing gpu. Intel gpu wasn't running great on Windows 10 due to the spec needed just to browse. That was the issue with it running slow and why he decided to try android due to the low hardware requirements (gpu especially).

My mom has an aging 2core-2thread Pentium based Acer laptop from 2012. I upgraded her from 3GB of ram to 8GB and to a 120GB SSD with a clean install of Windows as a gift a couple years ago, but she refuses to change systems because of the amount of $$ she spent on it 8+ years ago. She just wants to keep using it until it dies. She even turned away my Thinkpad T540p. I think I'm going to try bringing over my spare 120GB SSD, swapping drives and doing this install for her, just to breathe a little bit of extra life into the system. All she uses Windows for is Chrome and Spotify, I moved her to Google Drive years ago so she's not going to be losing anything on her local storage. Thanks RGHD, I'll follow up to let you know how it goes! PS, I know you read comments, let me know how well NovaLauncher works on the system, it'll get rid of that annoying swipe up gesture for the menu and add some customization.

No the base Android kernel is too heavily modified, but if you install Neverware's Cloudready OS aka Chromium OS on an X86-64 bit machine(make sure you have at least 4GB of RAM, 120GB of main storage(if you have a 2nd HDD/SSD unplug it during install so it does not accidentally wipe the drive, and install there, then plug it afterwards I know from experience of loosing some data lol) and a dual core CPU for comfortable usage, then you can go into the settings, and enable Linux support, but getting it to install at least for me at this point has been hit, and miss, but Chrome/Chromium(the opensource development version of Chrome OS) OS is based on Gentoo Linux, and BTW use Etcher to write your USB key no matter what OS you are using, as it does a better job then the official tool on the Neverware website. www.neverware.com/freedownload#intro-text

You can install linux deploy or anLinux (root) and userland or my favourite, andronix (no root). They use proot to simulate the linux environment. As long as you have 200.000+ on antutu, it will be fine. Just make sure you have more than 4 gb of ram since remember that you will need to install the linux kernel, all the compiler and programs which will run on top of your android.

@@ragilmalik I think they mean without having to go through all those steps, which is why I gave the answer I did, but ultimately if you want to run Linux apps you should be running a good distro like Manjaro Mate, or Mint DE if you can find a workflow with Cinnamon DE,of which I personally can't since I've been a MATE DE user since the mid 00's, Budgie is my next favorite DE next to Chromium's Aura Shell

What a wonderful idea, I really never thought about putting Android on a PC or Laptop giving us that use Android phones a Native OS to interact with. Bravo on your content. 👍🙂👍

from a X86 user. You can pretty much use it as a daily driver for college and home use as you can get office or google's own suite for free, and there are many games If you want a light fast one which works well (atleast on my Acer Aspire 5745) Bliss OS is a great choice.

Android is one of the lightest OS's available, the skins made by smartphone brands are what makes it heavy... Android x86 is based on purely stock Android (AOSP), you just don't get anything lighter than that, trust me.

Ubuntu ran great on a machine with a Pentium 4 and 1 gb of ram. My friend who used it preferred it for web browsing over a 250$ windows 10 laptop. Point is, Ubuntu will run on anything.

You can use Phoenix OS, its a simple program that allows you to install Android on a pre-partitioned drive, without a USB drive. It takes about 30 minutes from downloading to installing. Once its done, whenever you boot up your PC, it will ask you if you want to boot into Android. It comes with a PC-based interface and pre-mapped keys for games like PUBG, etc...

I dual boot Windows and Linux on my older PC. I never even thought of trying to put Android on it. If anyone has an old laptop with a regular hard drive, replace the hard drive with an SSD, I promise you it will make a huge difference, no matter your specs. Plus replacing the hard drive is often super easy on older laptops, not like today.

I ran Android-x86 back in the days on a very low spec netbook. It was some 2011 Intel Atom Dual-Core with like 1 or 2 GB of RAM, of course no dedicated GPU. Ran very smooth. Android is pretty well optimized for slow hardware

Common boot menu keys on laptops: - Acer: F12 (must be enabled on BIOS) - Lenovo (Thinkpad): F12 - Lenovo (Ideapad/Yoga): F12, but most of the time you're better off pressing the small button on the side with a needle - HP: F9 - Dell: F12 - MSI: F11 - Clevo-based laptops: F7 (edit: that could be the BIOS key, I can't remember) - Asus: ESC (old laptops and Eee), new laptops: no boot menu, go into BIOS and select Boot Override - Toshiba: F12 (modern), 0 (some of the very old ones) - Samsung: F4, if I remember correctly

I just got done installing this on my old WinBook TW100 from Microcenter and to my surprise, everything works, including the notoriously finicky touchscreen. (Side note: It doesn't even work properly in Windows without futzing around in the settings, sad to say. You have to place a configuration file, etc. Just an absolute pain in the butt, really.) So far, I'm impressed. Shame it's only a 1280x720 display, because 1080p looks great with Android devices, but I must say this quad-core Atom and 2 GB of RAM perform much better on this device than Walmart's Onn brand tablet with nearly the same guts, just an Arm-based quad-core instead of an Intel chip. They're night and day in terms of differences. And this is free! No more unnecessary e-waste!
