Hello KZbinrs! A special hello to my fellow PRELOADERS! For those of you that aren't PRELOADERS yet, hit that subscribe button and become one. In this video, I do an unboxing, installation and product review of Ohlins shocks that will replace my stock shocks. Are they worth the upgrade? Will I notice a difference in how my motorcycle feels? Watch the video and find out!😊
OHLINS HD 772 Harley S36 Blackline Twin Shocks
www.ohlinsusa....
You may be asking yourself, who are PRELOADERS?
PRELOADERS:
Subscribers to this channel who are dedicated to being proficient in slow speed motorcycle operation.
What does PRELOAD mean?
PRELOAD:
Engaging the throttle to raise the RPM’s (revolutions per minute) above idle and holding the throttle there, with the clutch pulled in (no power to the rear wheel, “in reserve” “PRELOADED”). This process will make power to the rear wheel available to the rider immediately when the clutch is opened up. There’s no need for the rider to be concerned with twisting the throttle for power because it’s already PRELOADED.

Hauling my wife and luggage around on my ultra limited the last 4 days covering 1300 miles through Yellowstone, the Tetons and beartooth pass and the one thing that kept me safe and looking competent was keeping it loaded. Doing uturns with 1400 pounds of bike and people isn’t exactly easy unless you know the techniques…thanks for the videos and all the help keeping us safe!

Also, if you go back and take a look at Ohlins calculation tool just up and to the right of the lateral bars you will see a small tab (easy to miss) for inches and metric so you can make a selection and see measurements expressed either way.

Loosen that set screw and you can turn the whole upper end of the shock. Then the adjusting knob won't be near anything. Your adjustable shocks will be totally adjustable.

If I am not mistaken, by increasing the length of the gap between the spring and top of the shop, you are adding preload and making a stiffer ride, not a softer ride. You want to lengthen the shock for a softer ride, not lengthen the gap you are referring to.
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle
@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle 3 жыл бұрын
Check their website. The larger you make that space I referred to in the video, the softer the ride.
@RideAmerica
@RideAmerica 3 жыл бұрын
@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle If you are referring to their calculator and chart and showing a softer ride with a wider gap - the reason it shows a softer ride on increasing that gap is due to more weight (i.e. passenger and/or luggage) but you are adding pre-load when adding to that gap and stiffening the spring and adding overall height to the shock and bike with anticipation of more weight. Clockwise /-adding pre-load / stiffer / less sag (becomes softer with more weight) counterclockwise adds more sag, lowers bike height and softens ride.

I think it's a mistake to raise/lower the motorcycle to align the second shock when the first one is already on. This will preload one shock differently than the other causing an imbalance. I believe it's better to extend the bottom eyelets to match the different lengths on right/left side. Both shocks can be installed at their relaxed lengths simultaneously that way. Thanks for pointing out to tighten them fully once the bike is lowered, I'll retighten my set that way!

Please correct me if I am wrong, but, when you are adjusting the preload and you are turning the collar onto the spring, in other words, increasing the amount of exposed threads above the collar, isn’t that increasing the preload which stiffens the shock/ride?

I had them on my BMW K1600GTL and I put them on my Road Glide. On another note, what made you decide to retire to Savannah, GA? My wife and I will both be retiring in 2 years and we're scouting locations. What are the pros and cons? Be safe.

@@BeTheBossOfYourMotorcycle when I reduce the mm eg: turning the adjustment anti clockwise the spring gets taller and my ride is too soft and bottoms out …when I turn the adjustment clockwise making the spring compress smaller which increases the mm my ride becomes firmer ..my std setting for my weight with 18kg total in saddle bags is 28mm…when I go two up with my wife It tells me I need 40mm which would compress the spring and make it firmer for the extra weight. I have the same shocks as you and have had them for 4 years. They are an excellent shock.

@@petergaiter8928 thanks Pete. Yes I’ve watched this video before. It doesn’t really address firm vs. soft. However, I also spoke to a representative from Ohlins who specifically informed me that the lower the number, the firmer the ride and the higher the number, the softer the ride. The calculator on the website seems to support what he’s saying. Take a look at it please and let me know if there’s something I’m missing. www.ohlinsusa.com/parts/1990-2020-harley-davidson-ultra-classic-harley-s36-blackline-twin-shocks-hd-772

Torque specs are 63-70 ft-lbs (85,4-95 Nm) AND blue Loctite. I had exactly the same shocks on my Road King, very good suspension upgrade (like legend etc.). What really bothered me, now I had to remove both saddlebags to adjust for a passenger. On my new Road Glide CVO I changed to Wilbers self leveling. It is only available as a complete set, therefor more pricy, but the riding comfort is unmatched. Nevertheless every (rear) suspension upgrade is a benefit, no matter which brand.

Seriously …? How about true control of your motorcycle, being able to make a u-turn without duck walking your bike and looking like an idiot or blocking traffic. How about not dropping and damaging your motorcycle because you never took the time to learn how to ride it properly. How about having the confidence to maneuver your motorcycle around obstacle or cars or gas pumps, again without dragging you feet everywhere. Anybody can ride a motorcycle once it’s rolling at speed. Very few know how to properly using the clutch, and not the throttle!, for slow speed control, smoothness, and no helmet bumping with your passenger. If you’re not slipping the clutch and finessing the friction zone every time you start off in traffic, following others cars and turning corners you don’t really know how to ride smoothly with control.
