If you're new to Ren, i very highly recommend that you watch the tales of jenny and screech and violet's tale trilogy. They are 3 separate songs that tie together, and it's available as s single KZbin video. After that, I *love* what went wrong part 1! There's a part 2 to that song as well. I think you're hooked now. It's not about "the entity in his head" or a split personality. The song makes clear, if you listen, and Ren himself has said, that the song isn't specifically about chronic illness or mental illness, nor is it specifically about the creative process, which is referenced even more frequently. It's about the human condition generally. We all face this. We all have internal dialogues. It's also about how darkness is part of existence, part of life, part of us and helps to make us who we are. It's not something that can be banished. Once this simple, if unpalatable, truth is accepted, life becomes that little bit easier and dark things a little easier to deal with and to mitigate. It's also recognising that although we like to paint everything black and white, in our heads, in reality things are rarely, if ever, that simple. The light is never entirely positive and the dark is never entirely negative. In fact, incredibly positive things, often unexpected, can emerge from the dark. I know this from my own experiences and Ren definitely knows it from his. It's been a recurring theme of his. Although we may not want to hear it while in the cloud, every cloud really does have a silver lining and that lining may contain incredible 'riches' but those riches can only be reached by travelling through the cloud.

For me the yodeling at the beginning is an example of art which is sharp and restrained while he attempts to contain his darker side. At the end its a lot more free and flows better while he accepts all parts of himself to perform

Actually it is two differently similar yodelings: In the first part it sounds strange, cringe and even scary, something you would only hear around a mental health hospital. It makes us feel unconfortable. But the second part sounds more like a relief, a celebration, a se se of freedom, we almost want to join him, sing and dance with him. Just like the whole song concept: two sides of the same coin.

I love both of your takes on this video!! This video, just like a lot of NF’s videos, have been played and reaction videos made from actual doctors, therapists, psychologist, etc., etc. and what you guys are saying is exactly what this song represents! All of the negative, “sinful“ behavior like jealousy and envy, ambition, etc., the temptation, just all of it is one voice. Then you have who he is as an actual person fighting back against all of this other stuff that’s going on in his head. He is literally a mental health musical warrior!! There are a lot of people that will not, and do not have anything to do with the formal therapies, it has such a stigma, but they will listen to music and they can derive help from music when they would have no help otherwise!

Ren's brain damage formed after yrs of undiagnosed Lyme disease, it traveled to his brain causing neuropathy(felt like his brain was on fire at times) and sections of his memory getting damaged. Being told you are not really sick it is your mind making you sick also played heavy on his psyche. All that and slowly dying and not knowing why likely gave him some mental and emotional issues.
