Excellent intro, beautifully filmed and great storytelling. I had to watch it a second time on my TV to fully enjoying the experience. A small masterpiece. I will definitely watch that part of the video again at a later point in time. And the rest of the video was interesting as well. Thanks for sharing your insights.

Ney nice intro! Glad to see you tested at 2nd native ISO and got clean results. I'm mostly wanting to shoot N-RAW to benefit from better NLE performance and also the flexibility in edit. Still, good reminder to stick to REC709 when the conditions are absolutely horrible.

I don't have the Z6III, but I did get the OG one back when it came out. The flickering noise on Z6III looks very similar to that when using an external recorder on the first Z6, which they did fix with the 3.40, so I'm hoping they have a fix for this as well.

This reminds me of the "banding issue" with the Z6 back in 2018. If you underexposed by five full stops and then pulled up the shadows, you could see banding. Only popped up during camera testing because in practicality, nobody is so incompetent that they're shooting 5 stops underexposed and trying to rescue shadow data in post. I don't think the Z6iii issue is quite on par with that bit of ridiculousness, because people will be using it for low light video shots, but it is something Nikon should have addressed before shipping. Of course Nikon has been REALLY good about firmware updates with most of their cameras. The Z9 is on v. 5.0 and is a completely different camera than what was originally released.

I brought up the same point in Tony's dynamic range video. I can't remember the YT channel. Looks 32 with grey hair? The dude was bringing back like 6 stops of exposure and then complaining that it looked bad, lol. Who shoots like that?
@riccardopolini12893 ай бұрын
There are situations where the subject is adequately lit and the background is 6+ stops darker. In these cases, when I try to recover details in the dark background with my Z6, the banding is clearly visible. The expertise of the photographer has no bearing. It's a sensor problem, a problem solved when the D780 was introduced in 2020!

If you can't manipulate the RAW and LOG image, why shoot RAW / Log at all? If I have to expose it perfectly to get a good image why bother? The highlights clip early, and the shadows cannot be brought up.

Enjoyed the intro, thanks! Isn't it the opposite of the "flicker issue" though? Presumably for the intro you have exposed properly and then darkened the shadows, whereas the flickering happens when trying to pull shadow brightness up.
@TannerSimpsonMediaАй бұрын
100%. I think that was kinda the point I was trying to make. If you shoot in log and get the exposure even remotely close, the flicker shouldn't be a problem.

It's a non issue. Nikon is doing great, for the price you pay you get a lot more than other brands. And there are some third party prime lenses that are cheap and excellent quality. So you can build a system for less money than Sony or Canon with similar capabilities.

This is really well done. I am on the fence about the Sony A7C II and the Nikon Z6 III mostly to shoot video for my sons hockey team. This is pushing me toward the Nikon.
@TannerSimpsonMedia3 ай бұрын
The A7Cii is a really good camera too, and from what I understand the autofocus is better. BUT. The rolling shutter is pretty bad on it. Rolling shutter on the Z6iii is really well controlled.
@StevenBoz3 ай бұрын
@@TannerSimpsonMedia Thanks! I was leaning toward the A7C II because it seems like it would be easier to manage holding and recording than a more robust camera. But the footage you've capture is absolutely stunning.

We just had the A7Cii and the Z6iii for a week. Nikon outshined in almost every way. Colors, sharpness, ease of use, comfort/ergonomics… within 1 hour it was clear that we were going to keep the Nikon. This was focused on photography. The case just gets much stronger with video. (This is an unprofessional hobbyist’s opinion). Keep in mind, lens availability and options is best on Sony, but Nikon’s S lenses are incredible. Just my 2 cents.

Is the flickering happen only in N-Raw or also in N-Log?
@TannerSimpsonMedia2 ай бұрын
It's there in H.265 N-Log when the shadows are cranked like crazy. If you expose even a little bit correctly, and use native ISOs, you won't see it. Rumor has it Nikon is working on a fix as well.

People act like this is camera breaking. News flash... It's not. The D600 shutter spot issue was 😊 i know cause i have one. Great cinematic intro, i didn't see any flickering at all. Furthermore, I'm still waiting for a competent video like that to show the flickering. Something thats never going to happen with someone who knows what they are doing. If someone manages to constantly get flickering with this camera in their videos, #1, I'll never hire them for any video work ever so that says it all right there. Im waiting for someone to return their Z6iii because of this so i can score a good deal on gently used one to compliment my Z8 🫡

It was bad enough that dozens of people on our forum have returned their Z6 III cameras, me included. NRAW + NLOG at ISO 5000 is the worst performer, but visible 1600-5000. It's not as visible shooting SDR, but when using NLOG, it's there. It's upsetting because on paper, it's the best camera for the price. It's THE camera I was waiting for.
@TannerSimpsonMedia3 ай бұрын
Visible, definitely. Camera definitely wasn't made to shoot at 5000ISO in NLOG. Most video shooters stick to base ISOs (800 and 6400) and then ND as needed. Video isn't supposed to be viewed in NLog either, it needs a color space conversion.
@joshkiddfilms12953 ай бұрын
trying to shoot at the tail end or even middle of a gain circuit on a dual iso sensor is going to present similar problems on almost all cameras...I had a Canon R3 that was triple gain ISO, and it had all sorts of issues if you tried to shoot at the end of the first base and was really noisy in general if you tried to push the first circuit hard. These cameras are designed to shoot at base iso's and expose as bright as possible without clipping. When you shoot this way, the "issues" really dont present at all.
@nigerian-nightmare3 ай бұрын
I shoot mostly at iso 6400 Nraw, and I can't seem to see the flickering. I have bad eyes. I'm sure it is present but it hasn't caused any issues for me to want to return the camera.
@autoexoticswestcoast29 күн бұрын
@@TannerSimpsonMedia - The issue is shooting in Auto where the camera moves up through the ISO range, hits 5000 (the worst performing) then 6400. The camera doesn't smooth out the changes and you notice the significant differences in your footage.
@TannerSimpsonMedia29 күн бұрын
I can see how that would be frustrating for auto shooters. I always shoot manual, and I would never recommend auto for video shooters. For 90% of shooters on these pro-sumer camera bodies, I would stick with a native ISO. The other 10% that have a more advanced understanding of ISO might move off of native in various circumstances, but for the majority of shooters from beginner to high level there's really no need to use anything other than the native ISOs, provided you have a VND. I wouldn't shoot auto on my A7Siii either. 10000 ISO right before the gain circuit switch is horrendous.
@noenken3 ай бұрын
The main reason to use raw in the first place is the flexibility in post. Pushing shadows is a big part of that flexibility. And yes, raw is something people will use even casually without setting up lights. "Just don't do that" is not much different from telling a hobby photographer to just shoot jpeg. Can you live with it? Yes, obviously. It's just another thing to work around. Would I recommend anyone to buy the Z6III before a fix is released? No. Especially not in places in the world where you can get a Z8 for 30% more. Personally if I had bought a Z6III and then heard about the flickering, I would have sent it back. It is a fault and it will lower the value of the camera if you want to sell it later on.

Great video! I think what people failed to realize, is that the Nikon Z63 is like a high-end cinema camera. It delivers an image that is very high-end. If you shoot with an Arri Alexa, mini LF, it is very noisy above 1600 ASA. In fact it’s not used above that because it’s super noisy. So there is drawbacks and constraints to high and cinema cameras. I feel like the image is so amazing out of this Nikon that it’s worth it.
