It's probably a sensor that will automatically open the first gate/door of their multilayered interlock system. After that, you probably need to drive many miles and pass many gates before you get to the receptionist.

An interesting fact is that a man once entered the gates without permission and was confronted by the police and military personnel. If you had driven in, you would have been stopped and asked to present your badge if you had one.

That gate works as a checkpoint. They would open it and the fed would drive in to show there clearance badge. A ton of area 51 footage i've seen is the feds and security normally drive in trucks so it could be 100% possible they thought you were a fed.

What scared me most was my own reaction to the gate opening. My honest thought process was that they're being invited through to either show their ID if they worked there or state their intentions otherwise. Like this is an entrance to some goddamn holiday resort. I would have died

They probably thought you were visiting with high level clearance, and tested you. If you were with the military they know you wouldn't have hesitated to enter. Hence they didn't hesitate to close it back. To imagine you could've possibly fooled the guards at their post and possibly gained access to 51.

Fun fact! There was a man who entered Area 51 and filmed most of his journey. He survived going in there and out of there. He was researching a specific event in history and needed to get into Area 51 in order to find some information about this event. He lived to tell the story. It was crazy. I watched a documentary about it.
