Just a note about the ignitor tests: The actual ignitors are just thin bits of wire covered in a small amount of explosive, so when the wire gets hot the explosive ignites. In order to get the wire hot it takes a pretty good whack of current, that means you can test to make sure that wire is still in good shape by passing a tiny current though it. So when she shorted that connection, she was just testing to make sure the ignition circuit was working right, then she knew that the ignitor was the problem. As it happens, air bags are ignited the same way, and most cars will test the ignitor constantly as you are driving to make sure it is in good health. The closest thing to it you've probably handled is a simple fuse, it works the same way.
@christykail3314
@christykail3314 Жыл бұрын
Ah I never understood how you could check continuity on an ignitor without triggering it! Seen it done in loads of videos about model rockets, but never understood how it worked.
@quantum5768
@quantum5768 10 ай бұрын
This is how I guessed it works but it's nice to see confirmation as I was curious. I guess it's doing a resistance measurement with that (small) injected current and there's limits on how high the resistance can be before the igniter is marked as "failed"? I.e open circuit means the igniter has a problem with wiring or the igniter itself is faulty.

It doesn't at all surprise me that 4 intelligent, funny, humans found each other along the way & have great chemistry... but they all are absolutely worthy & capable of shining in the spotlight on their own *if that's what they wish for themselves* & since our beloved Matty wants it so much, I sure as heck hope he gets it! This was an absolutely, infectious, delightful pleasure to watch.

Some minor inaccuracies though the capacitors in the fire one system which they use don't produce a particularly high voltage, it's 24v from memory but might be 12v. There are capacitor discharge systems that do operate at very high voltage but they're generally designed for high explosive demolition work. Also the thing about leaving wires on the ground due to induced currents from generators on wet ground was complete rubbish, it's good practice not to leave them on the ground but not for that reason. Fire one uses a differential system to send data over two wires but also uses those two wires to charge the capacitors in the modules pre show an the capacitor in each module should contain enough energy to fire everything connected to that module. I think I have some photos of the module PCB if you're interested.

Great video Matt! As someone who used to used in the fireworks industry years ago, it would have been awesome if they could have showed you the way that fireworks used to be lit. You made a joke about someone lighting each shell by hand but that was the way we did it before the automated electronic systems came about! We would use road flares and have a few people set up at different areas and time things just by looking down the line at the other people lighting their sections. We also would have to reload some of those mortar tubes with new shells as the show went on above us. It's an incredibly fun and exciting industry, and not many people appreciate the work that goes into these short shows. Awesome to see that get shown here.
