My grandfather brother enlisted in 1945. He served in Korea and Vietnam as a army medic. In 1968 he was awarded the bronze star medal. His medic unit came under sudden mortar fire. There were two soldiers trapped and paralyzed in the medic tent. Jimmy went into the tent as bomb were being drop. He went against his commanding officer order to not enter the tent and he rescued both soldiers on his back onto a huey helicopter back to safety.

Man oh man does this ever bring back memories. I went to Boot Camp in San Diego, across the bay at the Marine Corp Recruit Depot. I have mad respect for the Navy. When I first enlisted I thought that I could out perform any recruit in any other branch of the service. The I went through my training and went to my regular duty station. In my MOS I was able to work very in depth with each branch of the service, that is when I began to mature as a Marine and had mutual mad respect for each branch. We all have missions, and most times those missions meant that you were protecting people. Life took on a whole other meaning then. I am so glad that you got to experience a portion of what our brave service men and women train for and do everyday of every week. It's a responsibility that they gladly shoulder. Props to you and Chase for spending time with these awesome people. Thank you for sharing the wee bit that you had time to experience.

One of the prettiest beaches I have ever seen is at Cam Ranh Bay, S. Viet. I managed to be assigned there during the Tet Offensive (1968). On the Cam Ranh Peninsula were a large Air Force Base, a Navy base, & an Army base as Cam Ranh was a deep water port. I was in the A.F. & one of my best fiends growing up was stationed on a river mine sweeper out of Cam Ranh Bay. I hitchhiked to the Naval area to seem my friend & check out their beach. Each service had their own beach. I found out that the Navy had scuba equipment to check out as well as Sunfish sailboats & little skiffs with an outboard. War is hell! My friend & I checked out a skiff with the notion to try to cross the bay. We had heard about a bar in Cam Ranh Village which was off limits to Amer. personnel. We got half way across before being stopped & turned around by a Vietnamese gun boat. On our return voyage we encountered a shark which was longer than our skiff so we called it a day. When we were confronted by a questionable decision like using a small outboard to go to an off-limits bar w/bar girls, we would rely on this question for guidance. "What are they going to do to us? Send us to Vietnam! How bad could it get anyway?"

Grandfather was career Navy, Grandmother was also in the Navy as a Nurse during WWII, My Father was a Marine during Vietnam and later interservice transferred to the Air Force he served 28 years total service between both branches, Our Mother was a Lt, in the Air Force before meeting our Father. I served in the Marine for 8 years from 84-92 my Brother served Air Force as a Crew Chief for the F-117 Stealth Fighter and the transitioned over to the F-22 Raptor before his retirement. I have multiple Aunts and Uncles who have served in Air Force and Army, Multiple Cousins serving in all the Branches. Our family might have sacrificed our time defending this great country but I am extremely proud of all my Brothers and Sisters who have served or are currently serving our great country. Remember if you are near a military installation during the holidays think about adopting a military member who cannot be home for the Holidays. I remember a time I had the honor and privilege of being taken in by a family and it meant the world to me.

It was interesting to watch the video, especially the rhib ride. Having been a coxswain myself, and being one of the first to test those headsets, and being one of the first to drive the rhib boats the way they are today. I always wondered if the Navy used those headsets, but I knew they were going to use the rhib design, with the new backing for the coxswain. And the mounts were mounted in different places back in my day. So not only was it cool to see the Navy getting some LOVE, but it was cool to see something I did when I was in and how it was done today.
