I'm from Europe and also added more this week. Regarding the dividends: you have to consider FX-rates. If looking at the div in EUR it doesn't look "that" bad like watching it in USD. Never the less it would be great if ASML is trying to get a smooth div increase the next years. Love that healthy 5% div raise especially with this volatile sale of these big chunky EUV machines.

Yes, and right now the USD is rather strong. American investors should invest more in foreign stocks.

When do you sell small positions to decrease number of shares?
@Hyper1555
@Hyper1555 19 сағат бұрын
Depends how hard your % of portfolio criteria are. You need to sleep well and be happy even if companies decline. If you are not and get scared and depressed by volatility (because of growth companies like asml or too much of your portfolio in one company) you need to adjust your portfolio to your tolerance.
@sorinpochtar
@sorinpochtar 19 сағат бұрын
@@Hyper1555 what if you have a lange gain in some position, but that possition is not growing anymore and it does not fit to your portfolio. or it's a small position and want to replace it. how/when to sell that position? it's not a matter of price declining.
@Hyper1555
@Hyper1555 19 сағат бұрын
@@sorinpochtar when fundamentals change, your investment changes. If you have better opportunities, sell the position (even 100% depending on the changes in fundamentals) and buy the better opportunities with better risk/reward
@charlielipthratt7291
@charlielipthratt7291 8 сағат бұрын
@sorinpochtar - If it's a small position, you sell a few shares of a stock that is down along with the stock that is up. Then, if you really feel like you need the shares back from the stock that was down, buy them back in 30 days to avoid a wash sale. You get the the gains tax free and you don't worry about the price of the stock you bought back if it's a long term hold.

With the number of holdings you have I think you are well insulated from the volatility that comes with investing in the semiconductor industry. It's a cyclical industry regardless of how much attention it's gotten lately. My portfolio only has 18 total positions and 2 of those are ETFs. Due to that I don't invest in boom or bust companies. My positions are concentrated and a downturn event like this week actually would hurt. Whereas you have enough positions to kind of hide this stock's volatility. If you're holding ASML you may not want to reduce your holdings imo. BTW I was actually up on the day everything else was in the red. I hold plenty of information technology stocks I just don't hold anything from the semiconductor industry.

So do you dca into each position each month, regardless of the price? Or just add to each one when they dip?
@TheBooban
@TheBooban 6 сағат бұрын
8:06 its so frustrating to hear this advice from financial influencers. Its not true at all. You should never sell a stock just because you think you should have fewer stocks. It is so hard to pick stocks, your decision should only be based on the stock itself. You don't sell a good stock just because you have so many, totally terrible reason. You said you want to funnel money in your high conviction stocks. So do it. Future buys go to them. That doesn't mean you sell the other one. Just let it ride. You can't be sure if that stock will go up and you regret your decision.

Nice buy! I put 3k into ASML at $684. I wish I added an additional 3k to it but I was also adding to NVDA as well. It may come back down with some more volatility over time.

Its obviously a great company. My problem is the PE (TTM) of about 35 which is really steep and makes it very speculative. They have to perform extremely well during the nest decade, which right now it seems like they will, but that's still pretty speculative. I rarely invest in companies above 25 in PE
@Dividendology
@Dividendology 19 сағат бұрын
Good thoughts. Important to remember PE ratio by itself doesn’t tell you enough without factoring in the potential growth.
@johanneshvitfeldt1090
@johanneshvitfeldt1090 19 сағат бұрын
@Dividendology of course not. You have to compare the growth and the quality of the company to the PE, and I generally don't invest in these high levels even if it's a quality stock

If you look at the charts for ASML for the last 10 years. Change it over to logarithmic. Then form a channel. We are at the bottom of the channel and we can expect 40-100% return if the pattern holds true. which, given the buildout over the next 5 years, we can.

ASML is limited in who they can sell too, and how many machines they can sell. They do not operate in autonomy. This is a very unique company, but they are limited in their growth and sales due to national security. NVDA is a far better play both in P/E and growth and sales.
@TheBooban

So you opened a position at €722? Probably good. But it doesn't make sense that ASML and NVIDIA are repeatedly reported to be undervalued when the market, especially tech, is so over valued. Where is all the "smart" money?

A semi-conductor ETF would be more prudent and a likely better selection over the next decade. ASML does not seem to align with your dividend goals. Best of luck with it.

I'm further along the investing journey, so will provide a counterpoint on limiting stock numbers and diversification. When you transition to living on dividends, around 30 holdings is a minimum to protect against outsized impact of dividend cuts or stagnation. Anything less, and you may not sleep well at night.

I was debating back and forth on buying ASML due to volatility. Then also the tariffs that trump is gonna impose on other countries might affect it as well. So I decided to not add it and look for something else. Then, I see this video and you’re talking about it. So now I’m taking this as a sign to just do it. I’ll put about 3k in and let it sit for now.

I think it makes perfect sense to wait til after the earnings report. It lowers your risk by quite a lot, since you do not get the volatility of that trading day and you also get newer information to base your decision on. The exception is if you believe you have an insight into the company that is not reflected in the stock price before the earnings report. But really, what in the world sort of special insight can you or I have into this hyped, popular, ultra high tech company? That is why I am not going to buy any shares - there is zero reason why I (or any if us) will have an advantage in assessing the stock, so there is zero reason to think we will beat the market here. Quite the opposite.
