In my opinion that was the 90's. In the 90s almost all the cars had fuel injection which was evolved to perfection and made engine perform better but also made them easier on gas, luxury amenities that became normal like AC, electric windows, cruise control these hardly failed and if it failed it was easy and not that expensive to fix aswell as the suspension which was well balanced and made cars handle very solid. The early to mid 2000's was a time when the car manufacturers wanted to implement new technologies into cars. But the new technologies weren't developed to be working flawless. Think of BMW's iDrive and SMG, Renault Velsatis, Avantime and Laguna MK2, VW Pheaton and Touareg, Mercedes Sclass W220 and Eclass W211. This MG ZS was still being built in 2005 but developed in the 90's. It had the underpinnings of a 92 Civic EG/Integra and a MG/Rover engine also from the 90's.

I remember walking around a car supermarket in the early 00's with my Dad (I was only about 7 or 8) and I saw a few of these and fell in love. Even at that age, I could tell that the build quality was questionable, but it didn't matter because it passed the "cool" test
@Iceeeen2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. although I couldn't care less about the safety part. But fuel injection was good, not like early version with a lot of small annoying things. The equipment was exactly what i want in a car. AC, electric windows, cruise control and nothing that really ratteld in the car. Not a million beeps, stupid assist things or a car that tries to steer you in to the barrier cause it thinks it knows better. When you switch something of it is actually of and that manual gearbox was just that, manual No of todays petrol cars interest me a bit. EVs are interesting if you only could get just a car and not a touch thing that driving comes as a bi product

It shouldn't cost anywhere near as much as you think to get most of the bits you mentioned sorted, there are loads of bits for them in scrap yards. Door cards, roof lining, clock, etc are all easy to get hold of for cheap and just fit yourself. It's also the most common colour for them, so you might even be able to find replacement wings, rear bumper and so on in the same colour you need. Again, easy stuff to fit by yourself.

I think the Rovers and MGs should be saved more, they made some good cars and yes, they had a lot of flaws but they are not around anymore and the more cars that are on the road, the better the reminder will be for many years to come rather than a forgotten marque. I rather the Qashqais and whatever else SUV crossover things go to scrapie’s instead. Glad you are putting money into fixing this one up as like you say, many would give up on it.

I've owned 2 of the Honda MB6 civics that shared a chassis with the ZS, they where great cars, came with the B18C4 engine with 170bhp. I completely agree about the memories meaning more than what the car is. I just took part in a charity banger rally. I bought a 2005 nissan almera for £500. It's nothing special car wise but it's what it did that made it so special. I drove it through Europe completing challenges to raise money for the local hospice that cared for my Grandad when he lost his battle against cancer. It was my first ever time abroad and I conquered my fear of dressing up in fancy dress because of that almera. It started misfiring in Spain so had to retire but limped it home because I couldn't bear to scrap it. Because of those memories I can't scrap it, I have to save it and I'm struggling to find the money to do it (probably cost about £500 to get it back on the road) but I'm determined to save ìt. It's not just an old banger. It raised over £1600 for charity and helped me achieve a dream I thought would never happen so I desperately want to save it.

Good luck with the project, I had the MGZTT 2.5v6 fantastic car still miss it to this day plus even the wife misses the car. I found that the kv6 biggest downside to future proofing is the upper inlet manifold NO one is making a fix for the inlet rattle of death ( which WILL happen, it is when the plastic internals come apart. There is no fix apart from gutting them out or replacing with a used good working one.). if you can use your influence to get that sorted it should help to keep these engine cars on the road. Make sure you put in the uprated vis motors, the uprated metal thermostat and the uprated stainless steel lower coolant rail.

Even though it's got a leak in the cam carrier seal, and a coolant leak, and needs an interior cosmetic refresh...I'm not letting go of it for anything. Definitely my favourite car yet. Do yourself a favour - FullDip the wheels, cost about £60-70 and it's pretty durable. Pull the fabric off the door cards, sand them down and either spray them or wrap them (probably about £30 in rattle cans). Plenty of bumpers kicking around on eBay for £50-odd, and most are in this colour (it's the most popular). The SRS warning light is blindingly simple to fix - there's a connector under the driver's seat, just pull it and clean it with Servisol. Reconnect, and the problem's disappeared (disconnect the battery while doing that if you're of a nervous disposition).

Tiff Needell spanked one of these round a circuit and proclaimed it to be one of the best handling front wheel drive chassis he’d ever experienced. I had the chance to save one a few years ago. It was a runner, but had been sitting for five years completely untouched outside. Even putting 4 good tyres on it, replacing all the brakes and the blowing exhaust would’ve taken the investment to about what the finished car would’ve been worth. That was without the timing belt and water pump that needed doing, the leaking radiator that needed replacing, and the general recommissioning that any car that’s been untouched for five years needs. In the end it went for spares to keep another one alive.

Totally get your point. I am always thinking how it would be to buy a 1991 Opel Kadett GSI 16v. Was my 2nd car, so many good memories and it was a blast in those days

Always loved the vents behind the front wheels on these. Also didn't realise they were only 1250kg. Pretty sure my Clio 197 is the same as that.

Of all the 50 cars I have owned (33) or driven on test or hires when my JLR products have broken down the MG ZS 180 is very near the top of my favourite list and arguably the top car. I owned mine in the 6 months prior to MG going out of business in fact I had agreed to sell it to the MG dealer in Elgin Scotland and despite the failure of MG during our negotiations he honored the price we had agreed. My car was the Mk 2 variant like yours but in X-Power Grey and I took it to garage in Aberdeen to have an Induction kit and a Subwoofer fitted. The sound of that V6 Induction gave it more of a Subaru sound and complimented the large rear wing. The 1st time I drove onto the ferry to my home in the Isle of Lewis the ferrymen mistook the car for a Subaru. I loved that car for the speed, handling and the sound as well as the looks. I drove it on a 750 mile round trip to Campbeltown and Aberdeen for one of my closest friends funerals and although it was a sad reason I enjoyed every mile apart from the fact it drank fuel at the rate of 5 miles to the Litre. To sum up, what a beast of a car that I always hanker after another one. I have always wondered how much more power could have been squeezed out of that unit with either a Turbo or Supercharger. I hope your build progresses well as you have got a cracker on your hands.

Well I’m with you on viewing “ lessor mortal” cars with affection; I am also luckily enough to have McLaren, Ferrari and Lotus in the garage but will often grab my sons Skoda Citigo just so I can thrash the nuts off it and not be worried I’ll be doing 90mph past a school. These cars are all part of our combined history and deserve to be kept on the street. Much like 1970’s are defined as Spitfire’s and MGB’s, the 1980’s by XR2’s, 205Gti’s and the 90’s and noughties by Impreza, M3’s and R34 GTR’s, quirky cars like Suzuki Swift, Hairy Arsed TVR’s and minor exotics like Alpine 610 all form part of our motoring heritage.

I think you should make a series on this where you takes us with you bringing it back to it's former glory (something a little like M539 prod). I think people would be very interested in it. Maybe post it on your other youtube channel.

Cool that you are saving this great little car. It would be great to see some of work being done similar to Harry's Jag and Lancia
