My take is that this is a sign that Salesforce is going all in on AI. They see that the skills gap is in having enough people who can configure and set up the generative AI features on the platform, so by making the AI Associate and Specialist Certifications free through next year will help them in skilling people up quickly.

You will receive certification to email address associated to your webaccessor account. And also you can view your certifications in your own trailhead account

They just want to give away few certificates for free so that students get hooked on and they have something to show even if it doesn't have a real value in industry. AI associate and specialist are very easy and spams. If you want to learn real AI go somewhere else.
