They make plastic round spacers to go on your pipe in the well. You tape the electric wire to your pipe and put a spacer about one every foot. This will keep your wire from rubbing the casing when you pull the line or put it in. Also everytime your pump kicks on it tends to torque inside the well and the spacers will again protect your pipe and electric line.

I believe the spacers (casing spacer) are every 6 to 8 feet including just above the pump and at the top. I had a home a while back with a 1000 foot well in CT. They used a truck and a few people to pull it out when it was hit by lighting. I was thankful for insurance. I also recall that the wire was taped to the pipe more frequently as was the pull rope.

Thanks for the video Shaun ! A couple tips from a retired well service guy. That poly safety rope should get you by for a year but it will deteriorate in the sun. Many times I've had those damn poly ropes break right where they exit the well seal (cap) and the safety rope drops down the well and lands in a tangle that will prevent the pump from being lifted. I used to attach the safety rope to an eye bolt tied under the well seal so the sunlight doesn't get to it. (Nylon line will last longer than poly and is more resistant to abrasion.) On the barb fittings and any other fittings that will be going inside a well I only use metal fittings . Steel fittings will may be fine unless the water is corrosive, otherwise use brass or stainless. The barb fittings going down a well should be double hose clamped on each side of the barb to hold under the pressure and weight of the pump and pipe filled with water inside (about 1/2 pound per foot of 1-1/4" poly pipe.) I could add some minor stuff but none of it is likely to cause you serious problems. Best wishes and good luck out there !!!

Why even lower a pump into the well at all? I've studied groundwater engineering and I admitt my knowledge is theoretica,l but shouldn't a pump anywhere on the hose have the same effect? Also is a hose even needed, if the casing is good couldn't you just connect to a hermetic seal in the cap and use the casing as a hose? As I udnerstand it it shoud work until your waterlevel drops into the screen region of the well.

@@DaDunge Excellent question ! The limiting factor in suction pumping of water is that when the pressure is reduced within a partial vacuum the water will "boil" and turn into a vapor. The boiling point depends on the temperature and vacuum pressure. The maximum theoretical height from which liquid water can lifted with suction is approximately 34 feet. When considering pump efficiency, friction losses, temperature and altitude factors the maximum practical suction lift with a pump is closer to 20 feet or so. As the suction lift increases it becomes increasingly energy inefficient (even with the use of eductor or venturi-jet pumping.) When pumping water from depths over 20 feet most folks will look to submersible pumps to do the job.
@DaDunge

hey i hope you won't mind a suggestion from another biologist. you're doing good with the water, but the type of plants i think you need to go for is wildflowers specifically. the flowers will bring the bugs which will bring the birds which will bring the forest. a mix of wildflower seeds would work best (you can do isolated pockets you don't have to blanket seed), and choose nitrogen fixing species as much as possible to regenerate your soils ready for the seeds the birds will bring.
@Dragonited
@Dragonited 5 ай бұрын
I think it might be too early for that. He is focusing on native desert plants at the moment, and that is what will be able to survive for now there. Before he can add any wildflowers, he will need to increase the mulch content of the soil, which at the moment is mostly rocks and sand. Sure, if he finds some desert wildflowers, they might work, though at the moment the local bug life is already established on the local plants, and there already are local bird spieces that are focused on local bug life.

A couple of tips from somebody who has had to put in a number of wells, use submersible wire, use spacers, tape your wire to the pipe every 10', put a torque arrestor directly above the pump, if you are going to go down more than 100' put backflow check valves on your pipe every 100' so when you turn off your pump you don't have that entire water column slamming back into your pump it will give you longer pump life.

Pretty sure you can find out what the drilling depth and water table level of that well is. Not being judgmental, but it's probably a couple hundred feet or more down and you'll need a lot more pipe. Also, you really need to be using submersible well wire. Lay your pipe and wire out first on the ground, tape the wire to the pipe at least every ten feet or so. It'll make life a lot easier. I dropped and pulled more submersible well pumps in south Texas than I care to remember.

The correct way to set a pump (I have lived with a well pump system for over 40 years and redone it a couple of times). Plumb your well with a 1 to 2 lb weight on a nylon cord. Let it go to the bottom, unless you go past 400 ft. - you can stop. Whatever depth you get set your pump about 25 feet more toward the surface than that. So if you get 275 then set your pump at 250. This will prevent the pump from getting sand into it and you will get max water capacity.

Many times wires connections are silver soldered for the best connection and then long heatshrink tubes are put in place. Most people with also install a check valve just above the pump.

Bro, can I share an idea? It would be great if you had a day to bring more people to the property to help collect organic materials from there. theycould use this material to cover some parts of the soil, spreading it in a thick layer over a good area. You could make walls of desert grass and, within these natural walls, people could focus on covering the land inside. Spreading sugar cane juice would promote new microbial life,sugar start new life in soil, and with minimal water maintenance, you could stabilize the soil acre by acre. After six months, you'd have some boosted areas to accelerate soil formation. Another thing, don't be too attached to native species. In the past, they weren't natives either. Just enjoy the possibility of mixing different plants, considering the lifespan of each plant, stratification, and their end purposes. Potatoes and cassava are hardy roots, great for breaking up the soil. If you leave them there, in the future, they'll decompose and enrich the soil, working for you even while you sleep. Hehe.

@BrillPappin
@BrillPappin 8 ай бұрын
@@albertomlnunes so a thicker pipe will give him more volume at pressure to distribute, but won't change the actual pressure. The reason being that the weight of the water is relative to the height of the column of water, perpendicular to the plain of the earth. He would need to get it higher to get more pressure. However your suggestion is good because if his feeder pipes are 1" and he has 4 or them, then he'll get a consistent pressure with a 4" pipe. If he uses a 2" pipe (which is what it looks like) and he's feeding four 1" pipes, he'll have only half pressure in them.

@BrillPappin 8 ай бұрын
@@albertomlnunes I am not sure that how it works. The pressure is measured in a column, so a wider pipe just gives "more columns" to measure. The pressure is the same. So if you have a 4" pipe, with a 1" hole in it, you are only getting the pressure of a 1" column of water above the hole.

so i am only an occasional casual viewer , because regenerative farming is kinda my obsession... especially since my land is recovering from overgrazing and consequently lacking a lot of top soil. so i must ask... why no mulch? i live in Florida where it's humid as hell and rains all the time, but even i use mulch. i mean i actually live right on the edge of a swamp and I STILL use mulch. i didn't used to though, because i wrongly assumed watering constantly was enough. but when i got a clue, (David the Good is a neat channel to follow) i saw major improvement to my saplings in a very short period of time. their leaves increased in size and they actually started to grow taller. as opposed to limping along and struggling through hardened clay until the next watering. the goal is, in David's own words, is to mimic the places trees like to grow, and that would be the forest. lots of organic matter holds moisture and good bacteria, food for their roots etc. yeah you'll probably have to improvise a canopy with tarps or sun shades to help the trees in the hottest parts of the day.. at least for a little while. one project i am bout to take on - just so i can get clean fresh water to my pond without running another motor - is to use my air conditioner unit's condensation. it's so hot in summer the unit runs all the time.. might as well put the water to good use? i thought i was clever in thinking that up all by myself, but apparently they've been doing that for a while in the middle east. maybe you are too. i don't know... anyway, i'm just curious. i love what you're doing. your dedication and determination is inspirational. if i wasn't so far away i would donate a truckload of manure from my livestock. i have way more than i can use - which i guess is testament to the work i've put into regrowing my pastures...
@NathanaelTak
@NathanaelTak 8 ай бұрын
Hey, your projects sound awesome. Very exciting stuff. I imagine the air conditioner condensation will be very useful. In past videos, he explained the lack of mulch. It's too costly to truck it in and the land is too barren to produce much. He was considering getting a mulcher and harvesting some biomass from his lot down by the river to use, but as far as I know, he hasn't moved on that yet. The terrace plantings are all basically covered in mulch (straw, sticks, and carbon mixed with manure and stuff). Getting the volume he would need would be impossibly expensive.

"34 GPM" I heard you say at about 3 minutes into the video. (So 34 US Gallons per minute ! When I lived in Rural Canterbury (NZ) a 200 Gallon Per Hour pump was standard for rural house and garden supplies, and were were into a massive shallow aquifer that virtually couldn't be pumped dry). Yours is a huge capacity water pump. The bore-wells associated with many old Australian windmills are capable ONLY of a much smaller water delivery ONLY. That's one reason why a storage tank is often located adjacent to the windmill. It just slowly pumps away at a slow rate, during windy times, day or night, and keeps the watertank replenished. The overflow from a watertank can by diverted onto a nearby micro-orchard. just 2 or 3 Orange trees or Olive trees etc, which in themselves shade the watertank as they grow up. Trying to suck too much water, too quickly from your available aquifer is problematic. Expecting 2,000 gallons per hour from a windmill's well, is asking for trouble....unless your aquifer is almost limitless and has a quick "recharge" in the area around the well , and we know fresh water aquifers the world over are being drained and in some cases ruined by saltwater intrusion ( especially if near the sea coast). Trying to pump too much too quickly will mean the pump keeps running dry, also increases the chance of sucking up grit and stuff. Slow and steady does it. Why not just repair the windmill, it looks like it's all there, just got the top blown down by a strong wind? Depending on your local area, check whether the well water is safe for human or animal drinking even without treatment. Also ensure it's safe for plants. I previously lived in rural Australia and many semi-arid areas affected by "Dryland Salinity" have saline groundwater water that is as salty as the sea and will poison plants and the soil long term.

Always almost there Shaun, its coming along beautifully, I mean you are in about the harshest environment you could be for water and machinery so things are bound to take some doing. I think this way of supplementing for the first year is going to be fantastic and get things moving a lot faster.... Each time you bring in more biomatter and plant seeds it will just increase the water holding properties on the ranch, eventually you'll be able to fill in gaps without needing to irrigate ...I wonder if there is a way to monitor the water table and soil moisture...its not something I have really tried before other than by eye. Ive cleaned up and replanted dry streams with trees and had the water table rise and reactivate flow and Ive increased the overall watertable level but never found a way of monitoring it that doesnt impact it in a negative way. If you dig a hole you cause a drop in the water retention around the hole so anything like that needs to be temporary, dig the hole see where its damp then fill it back in...its a pain but without expensive sensors the best way to keep an eye on things

A 25 dollar high pressure, low flow pump will produce 120 psi and pump 1/3 gallon per minute through 18,000 feet of .25 inch line. So for under 3000 dollars you could plumb in a low flow poly water line. This line would have to be buried to avoid freezing and breaking by cows stepping on it. Why do it this way? A couple of solar panels would deliver nearly 200 gallons of water per day to your property! This would allow you to greatly expand your drip irrigation system and really jumpstart growing things

This irrigation system sounds like mine. I placed all the piping with the sprayers & other drip line piping. Connected this all to complete 2 circular systems not to lose pressure. Then fed it back to the tap only to find the piping and other gardening accessories didn’t fit the internal house tap. So back to square one! Before I get a plumber to change the tap I’m hoping this next step is of 25mm pvc pipe to attach to the tap & the irrigation piping should do the trick. All before uk becomes too hot? Heheh!

OK there is a concept not being met. Getting moisture to your seed on a standard way. Try stretching out thin mosquito netting about six foot high along your planting area so dew collects on the netting and drops to the ground. The concept of fog netting ring a bell? Even in the desert one has to have something to catch any dew for the ground in your growing bed. Sun water extracting tables may also help.

Hi guys, next time use PVC Pipe, and use a plastic cinch tie around your cable at the couplings or hubs. A pulley for the rope tied to a trucks bumper will make it a lot easier to lift the hundreds of pounds of pipe, Marine (salt water) Rated Romex cable and Stainless Steel pump. You can use a GFCI hook up on your green grounding wire, so you'll know what's going on with the juice. The large Pulley will make lowering and retracting the pipe easier. It is better to use 21 ft. Long pipe, since you can lean the pipe on the Wind Mill tower in order to lower it. On the whole you'll need to cap the well, so that varmints won't fall in a ruin the well. You can check out others who are making catch basins for trees to trap run off in places in Chad, Africa and other places too. And have a trailer standing by, that you can haul for emergencies. Three days is a long time in the desert. . . .

I've suggested this repeatedly only to be told he has more important priorities. I don't understand why he'll go to all this trouble and expense to get "a little bit of (mineralized/salty) water for just a year" from a well when he could be harvesting an easy 1200 gallons of naturally distilled rainwater off of the oil rig doghouses he has on site. People underestimate just how much rain they can harvest. I know people have recommended Brad Lancaster's books and videos to Shaun many times, but he seems like somebody who refuses to read books or do any research. I guess it draws more views and engagement to just muddle your way through things and get armchair quarterbacks like me frustrated enough to keep writing comments.

Hi folks, Next time use PVC pipe instead of a hose to your pump. It is a whole kot easier to take turns around the pipe so that the elecrrical waterproof lead lines do not chaffe against the rock or casing. See if your pump has a wire screen to orotect it from pebbles. 10 to twenty feet iff the bottom of the well is ok. Remember a kot of surface items have probably gone down that hole including mice, rats, lizards snakes, bugs, etc. Yep, that's all can be down there too. So find a Plumber who can image to the bottom if your well. Stringline can tell you how deep the well is, etc. So you can tell him how much Optic line he needs to bring. Takes a couple of days for good visibility. Same the water. Build a rock,gravel sand filter, or get a good diatmatious earth filter to get it crystal clear. Check for biologics with County Water or good comercial testers. They like one samples; dated, and well info. One needs a proper well rope that will not rot or turn brittle from sun or temperature (a oump house is goid for that) on a good pulley that can be tied off to glue on sections of pipe. That wind mill stand might be adapted to hold the rope, the pipe, the pump, and the full weight of the water. At least an inch and one quarter pipe. Whatever is the discharge of size of the pump. Keep us posted!

Hey so I have a simple idea for you on your water well.. its cheap and effective. Get a measurement of the well piping and find a rubber stopper thats slightly bigger or center bulged and core out the center for the size of the hosing for your pump. Then use clamps to secure the position. Use this to hold and accurately place the pump at the right depth

I have a tip that might help you clear up your hard won water so it is easier on your drip system. There is a flocculant that gold miners use in their recirculation systems to help with the suspended solids. It doesn't take much of the product, but you would need to have extra totes to let the water be treated and sit for a day or so, then transfer the cleaner water to your tanks for the drip line. Just a suggestion to prevent clogging of the drip ports.

You may need a pig or two and a chicken or three also. Tho predators (raptors and coyote) may be a problem so it might not work. Other possibilities are *small* 60w dehumidifiers you could power with solar that just turn out a pint to a quart of moisture per day that you can use in targeted ways. Probably cost $180 or less per setup. The panels also create a microclimate in their shade.

If the local home improvement stores don't sell it, you can get it at an electrical supply shop (where licensed electricians normally get their supplies). Most electrical supply shops don't require you to be an electrician, but they usually make you start an account with them.
