They make these special sheets that you hang up in frames and it collects the water out of the air and waters your plants 🌱 or can collect the water in storage containers that are being used in deserts around the world and areas where people have no wells for water. It might help your project immensely.

This looks like a really nice project that can provide huge benefits to the land. This includes slowing or stopping erosion including the increased inflow into the water table and ground cover benefits. This will also encourage more insects and hence birds and other animals. Well done all. The confirmation is also a nice touch as it gives confirmation and also exchange of information about the placement, construction and other advice from the biologists that attend. For the biologists it gives a nice chance to talk to land owners and get on-the-ground information as well as lend their expertise to them.

Two very important recommendations. One, anchor the run down. You wouldn't think the wind would bother it, but my wife loves telling the story of chasing one down full of chickens in a storm. Second, use concrete reinforcement mesh to put a floor in. Dogs and coyotes are really good at digging under the edge. Dumb dog couldn't figure how to get back out though.

Watching the videos on Permaculture in India or Africa, you see how people come as a collective to restore the natural environment and preserve water. Unfortunately, in America, one man is trying to do something good and everybody else is trying to capitalize on his work.

Why not plant trees of some sort? You need shade and they would create it. I bet an crappy elm tree or Russian olive would grow.

while perhaps not very obvious, all those trays are going to be exposed to high heat and strong sunlight,. Temps being high to begin with, that much BLACK plastic is going to trap even more heat. and raise the temperature inside the structure. Being in the Desert, HIGH HEAT kills. Plants, creatures, etc. AVOID additional Heat Gain and Build UP utilizing Heat Reflective Coloration for all those trays and accessory components. Purchase and use WHITE plastic trays and accessorys. White is Heat Reflective and will defect soil overheating.

Well done. Great knots. A pair of Stilson pipe wrenches - could also be used. You're in Texas could the bad crayon smell be hydrocarbons. We lived on water unfit for livestock for months. Some artesian water in Australia smells of sulphur, but the smell dissipates over time. Thanks for repairing your part of the planet.

Is this so-called "wasteland" the product of desertification or is it an actual ecosystem that belongs in that area and supports life endemic to that particular ecosystem? If the latter, you should just leave it alone! Aforestation, be it under the guise of permaculture or any other, is no better than what's been done in the past in terms of habitat destruction. This land looks BEAUTIFUL as is; beautifully rugged and certainly looks like it belongs there...

Zip ties only last 1 year in the exposed areas like the SF bay area, so I guess you will experience the same at best. I recommend bailing wire which will last years even though it rust. A lite coat of oil on them yearly will increase the life span. Bottom line, zip ties are very temporary at best. Bailing wire is cheap and most hardware stores have a good stock.

Unless you can find a really shallow wash without a hectare of a catchment area I would stay away from anything which may become a channel for a flash flood. You may survive debris either banging at the cage or swirling around your head but not a flash flood. Given a time and a chance, get sand bags, or better big 1m3 bags and fill them with dirt to build a shelter. For a more sophisticated wall check gabions. In the semi-emergency: dig a shallow trench on a flattish ground excavator wide. Park the excavator in it, get under it when it comes.

I absolutely get a kick out of the efforts to make Dustups a success. However, to be honest, I am curious and concerned about how much money the government has to throw at other projects like this? I see some people who, like me, seem to think the beaver dams like this should never see a penny of government money. Then there are people who are in favor of expenditures like this because government wastes so much money elsewhere, and spending money on random projects that may help green a speck of a vast, dry desert makes them feel good.

I've built thousands of miles of fence for years. Forget the power auger, your soil is too rocky. Just use hand tools. The soil is too dry to rely on the ground rod. Use alternate hot and ground wires on the fence. If they get between two wires, they get zapped.
