William Jennings Bryan is the only person to win the presidential nomination from a major political party three times, but lose all three times. He was the Democratic nominee in 1896, 1900 and 1908, losing to Republicans William McKinley twice, then to William Taft (sure were a lot of candidates named William around that time). When he ran the last time, Republicans campaigned with the line "Vote for Taft now, you can vote for Bryan anytime," which is pretty funny when you think about it.

I had no idea! Losing 3 times is rough!

It is, but it could be worse. McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist who probably would have targeted Bryan if he had been president.
