The best cozy game of 2023 btw IMO was easily Dave the Diver. It's a really cool mix between a roguelike where the goal is to capture fish and other ingredients while deepsea diving. And the other half is preparing those same fish that you caught into a meal for a restaurant simulator. Money earned is uses to upgrade the restaurant or your diving equipment. Incredibly cozy game.

It feels more like a mode of gameplay than an actual genre, considering how, to an extent, it gives off the impression of "[insert any game genre here] but subdued", and this is just me falling into a tangent of a hot take that games ought to have a cozy gaming mode All of that however does not discredit the idea that such a category at game awards should exist

I love comfort games, but not every comfort game has a cute art style. I love games like Minecraft and RDR2, even though RDR2 has a depressing story and can be competitive at times, if you go out and explore and find cool mechanics there are some very wholesome moments you'll find if you like stuff like fishing, hunting, or just riding your horse, etc. We need more games that are stress-free

Dredge is a cozy game for people who like disturbing looking fish (me) It’s gameplay loop is simple and fits into the cozy category with you going fishing, playing the luring mini game then going back to port and upgrading your boat, and has grid-based inventory management (epic) but has that horror edge and beautiful artstyle that is also disturbing (and reminds me slightly of dishonored) I need more horror-atmosphere-but-surprisingly-cozy games

@Anndreya05

If you play on PC, you can use the TimeSpeed mod to make the time pass slower, giving more time in the day to do everything you want and also relax. Also try to remember that there are no consequences if you don't do something in your first or second or third year because everything will happen again in following years and you can take as much as you need/want to progress. I also get stressed by how fast the time moves and these two things have massively helped and turned the game into one of my favorites!

Despite my love for fighting, (sometimes) shooting, and competitive games, I still like to play cozy games as well. One I can name is Minecraft, and while it does have fighting elements (I.E killing hostile mobs), I tend to like mining and building more. Mining, to me, is very satisfying, especially after mining tons of ores, and with the materials that I've mined, I can build my own base, which is just as satisfying, especially when I take a step to look back at what I built.

I definitely recommend it to anyone just wanting to chill and enjoy themself. I completely understand though, I play overwatch a lot and I have been since 2019-ish and it can get so frustrating. this is a neat little video to find, funnily enough, as a woman, who for a long time, played competitive shooters because i felt like i had something to prove; don't get me wrong like i obviously have a lot of fun in shooters, and the thrill of ranking up is a nice high to chase, but i started my foray into gaming with valorant because a friend of mine who was a girl streamed it and i was like wow that is so crazy that she's playing that she's so brave. i want to do it too. this year was like, the first time i've really allowed myself to get into the cozy, nice, calming sphere of games, despite the fact that i at one point loved stardew and man. it is such a nice break. i don't know why i denied myself of this for so long.

The problem I have with trying to define "cozy" as a genre is people are throwing anything with a cute art style as cozy. I've seen cozy game youtubers talk about fast paced platformers as cozy because it had a cute art style. I kinda like the term chill, cus there are a lot of games that are super chill and not stressful that don't have the cute art style so don't get lumped in with cozy. Like snowrunners or Power wash simulator. but overall I do love a no stress game to play to decompress or with my gf after a game of sweaty FPS and other action games.

In contrast with my IRL habits, my favorite games over the years have been stardew valley, animal crossing, house flipper, minecraft (usually in creative mode), slime rancher, etc. Its not like I didn’t try to get myself to like those games, but I think my IRL competitive mindset just didn’t want to deal with the stress of it when i am supposed to be relaxing.

i feel like life is strange was the first game that properly got me out of constantly playing fps competetive games, i had watched a lets play of it years and years ago, but I still got so immersed playing it for myself for the first time, and after beating it I began to play more singleplayer games, and even non fps games, I've always been a variety gamer but life i strange really pushed me to play more games and expand on the genres I play, the bioshock series also helped with that, it got me into atmospheric immersive games aswell. Essentially what im saying is, play life is strange 1 and before the storm. Play bioshock 1 and infinite Also common W video angyl

@@Angyl never tried either, but cut my teeth in Minecraft's redstone, RTS and 4X games so the general concept should still apply here: Factorio is not your typical cozy game, it's more of a brainy-cozy game. The endgame of a veteran will absolutely look bonkers for a beginner. Buuut the early game mechanics should be relatively beginner friendly. Just don't stress it, go in blind be open to learn and have fun. DON'T look up guides! Half the fun is discovering the mechanics, and feeling clever when you manage to rewire your builds and conveyor belts in a more efficient way. It's not a competitive game, don't try to study and master the meta early, you will only get information overload and burnout from that. If you already have a solid foundation, still find it fun, but feel like plateuing in your knowledge, then it's a good time to look up pro tips. But start blind, that discovery at the beginning is one of the best parts in brainy games, and figuring out the lessons on your own helps the most improving your logic for IRL general application. Also with your background in competitive shooters, I may recommend The Riftbreaker first. Has some Factorio aspects but not as complex with gorgeous graphics and combat. You are a scientist in a mechasuit teleporter into a hostile alien planet with the goal of establishing a research outpost and a permanent rift gate for colonization. Mine, collect resources, build factories and towers to fend off the wildlife. Diablo-like ARPG camera angle with both building and combat, fun stuff. Can be pretty cozy if you hunker up in your base, build and push the tech-tree. But can be pretty intense if you push the campaign objectives and go out exploring the wilds with underlevelled gear.

😄 I see you've found the best quality of a good cozy game -- you really can play it however you want. I mean, Dinkum or Stardew or Animal Crossing are never going to be full of headshots and gore, but if you really want to play "competitively" in those games, you can *make up* a way to do so.... which is also creative play, which is the whole point of...play. But I'm glad you've expanded your horizons, and are enjoying doing so.🙂

He didn't talk about gender roles or their history in gaming at all though. As a guy who grew up playing a lot of Harvest Moon, Just Dance, and other games targeted at a female audience. There was a disconnect when I started to play competitive games with other guys. And especially now where I play mostly social sims and find violence in games relatively mundane. There is a *very* noticeable gender gap in gaming between pro-social experiences being popular with women, and male gamers tending to shun any game that isn't violent or competitive. There is a lot to talk about here and interesting studies + data, but this video was just a guy talking about trying a new genre.

For me it was Snowrunner. Yeah id played a little bit of minecraft, but until SR, I never really realized how much nucer it was to just chill with a game rather than frantically running around trying to kill this guy or score that ball. It was a huge change of pace, and surprisingly welcome. Even after i burnt myself out on it, i found my self craving that coziness again, and got back into it. I recently finished Citizen Sleeper, and its in much of a similar vein. Its a choose your own path indie RPG that kind of feels like a slice of life in a Sci-Fi city, with the main quest being "figure out who you are and why you're here, and dont let your owners catch you, because btw youre a robot that went rogue."

You should try Stardew Valley, it is the best cozy game, the progress on those games comes from expanding the ways you have to make money, sort of. Animal Crossing is a different thing, is too much bound to IRL time and social play. Stardew Valley brings a little bit of RPG elements, harvest moon style, you want to complete some objetives as soon as possible, farm money, but is quite hard to optimize your day, decent deep progression if I can say so.

I had all types of games on PS1, some weird ones too, I liked Theme Hospital (Two Point Hospital for modern gamers), but for some reason I was more engaged when games back then had some small rooms with interactive stuff, like "Duke Nukem - Time to Kill" in the first area, there's a '1 room apartment' on the second floor that you can climb, and it was cozy to be there. Theme Hospital also had those generated doctors that would move and do their stuff, I liked to imagine what were they doing when typing on the keyboard of a Computer, that I didn't knew the concept of. Until I got my own, and The Sims 1 was very good game for cleansing the blood of Diablo 2 and the Depression of Max Payne 1. I also love the Edge, very much, but you must always balance it.

There are so many games that arent "cozy" that give me that relaxation feeling youre craving. The forest is a big one. Every time my friends and I start feeling the burnout of competitive games its one we always find ourselves going back to. The slow paced exploration and "do it how you want" is a very welcome change. That and dying light, always hits the spot there.

While I did play Animal Crossing as well with my wife, who played it obsessively. I've always played a variety of games & noticed that in my mid 20's to early 30's I started to drift away from competitive games & focus on coop games when playing with friends. Games like Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Remnant 1 + 2 & Helldivers 1 + 2 all stand out. The final nail in the coffin for competitive shooters for me was The Finals. Started playing it with a friend (we had trouble getting a reliable 3rd friend each night) for a total of 30-ish hours right after it came out. Almost over night the skill floor seemed to jump past us & while we still won regularly it felt like we had to steal each victory vs fighting & winning. So now the only competitive game I'll get into is something like Fall Guys where I don't take it seriously or a racer where I tend to still mop the floor with competition because it's about control & understanding physics & tracks vs twitch reflexes, despite still having them but preferring to use them for souls-like games.
