The lyrics clearly hint to an abuser and their victim. I mean, it literally talk abouts a wolf and a rabbit, which is a predatory relationship. " But the rest of my pack, I have left them behind " Its like they're trying to say " I left my friends/family for you " which is common for abusers to say to guilt trip their victims. " So rabbit please stop looking the other way. It's cold out there so why not stay here under my tail " - telling the victim the world is cold/cruel so the victim can be solely reliant on them. " Oh rabbit, my claws are down now so don't be afraid " The abuser has done the same thing to multiple other people but is claiming that they've changed now to manipulate their new victim.
@mariunfabregas753310 ай бұрын
I feel like the "abuser" in this scenario isn't even trying to intentionally manipulate the victim though, and that's what makes it more sad for me. He's not just trying to convince his victim that he's not a bad person, he's desperately trying to convince HIMSELF that he's not a bad person. "But the rest of my pack, I have left them behind" implies that the family he grew up with were toxic and perhaps even abusive. It also implies that he himself had enough self awareness to recognize that his family was abusive to him, and chose to distance himself away from them because he didn't want to become like them. Contrary to popular belief, most people don't actually want to be abusive and torment other people. But for a lot of people, it's hard to break out of the cycle of abuse if abuse is all they've ever known. It's why people who have been victims of abuse as children find it harder to maintain relationships and frienships as adults. They're more likely to develop antisocial behavior as well as self-sabotaging tendencies because genuine care and healthy behavior feels unfamiliar to them. I'm not saying this is the case for all abuse victims though, because it's very possible to overcome your trauma if you have enough emotional support as well as mental health support. But for this particular scenario, it seems like the "abuser" was not able to overcome his generational trauma. Even when he tried to be good, in the end he fell for the same traps as his own abusers and became the very thing he swore not to be. An abuser. When looking at the lyrics, these feels less like a story about a wolf that separated from it's pack to go vegan and more like a story of a man who wanted to break the cycle of abuse inflicted to him by his family. Though in the end his trauma ended up making him lash out and hurt the person whom he loved and promised to protect. It's his fault, but it's tragic nonetheless.
@Terastas9 ай бұрын
@@mariunfabregas7533I definitely hear the doubt and regret in it. Like he knows he's not toxic TO THE SAME EXTENT as the family he left behind, but he harbors a lot of doubts as to whether he's a good person or just "diet toxic" by comparison. I can relate to this. My own immediate family was pretty toxic and manipulative. And now that they're all either dead or estranged, I've spent a lot of time by myself, not because I'm antisocial, but because I'd rather die alone than risk subjecting a future generation to even one tenth of the crap I endured from them. Maybe all he wants from the rabbit is a little reassurance. He's heard all the excuses and proclamations his pack made and doesn't trust himself to be his own judge of character; only if he hears it from someone else.

@@mariunfabregas7533 Yes, I agree. Theres this common misconception that abusers know what they're doing, and enjoy it, when that isn't true for most cases. Nobody wakes up one day and decides " I'm going to be super manipulative and abusive today ". More likely then not, abusers don't even realize they're abusing someone, and are instead doing it subconsciously. Doesn't make it any less wrong though-- it just makes it a sad situation for everyone involved

I always interpreted this song as the struggle of trying to drop one’s mask. The wolf being a known antagonist is just trying to kill his reputation. They want the rabbit to be able to see past it. But to change is a struggle and there will always be those that don’t believe you. And more so is that the wolf struggles to differentiate between the mask, and who they are. Ultimately doing something they don’t want to anymore. It’s pain, regret, and just a downpour of this feeling that not matter how hard you try, you can’t change.

I fell in love with this song when it came out and it's been a while since I heard it and my interpretation of it changed. I feel like this is talking about a abuser talking to their victim. I feel like by him singing "I know I'm a Wolf" basically calling himself an animal or monster because that's what the victim sees him as. And the part where "the snow fields wouldn't be so big if you knew" can interpret (for me cause that's what I think) basically saying small world and they met at a wrong time wrong moment, or perhaps they broke apart and got back together. The "try to be brave" and "I left the rest of my pack" could interpret him telling the victim they changed and left their rough past behind and to give them a chance. Which in the end "So rabbit please stop looking the other way" it could be because he never changed and was just an illusion the abuser put up with. Like that saying "You can't teach an old dog new tricks" maybe the abuser was abused and grew up with harsh parents and was always told to follow(?). But also I like the vocals when its eerie like maybe the abuser went to far and killed the victim on accident and maybe the ending is him holding her telling them to wake up and look at them. But that's just my thoughts on what this song could interpret since it could be anything haha :]

I love this song because of the many metaphors. The snow fields being the large landscape that someone is surrounded by. Every direction looks the same, no difference and none provide a place to rest or hide. In other words, the abused have no where to go, and have to stick with what they know, which is their abuser, because it's the only thing that they recognize and know. The wolf is the abuser, or the antagonist. The wolf preys on the rabbit because it's natural. But the wolf can't live without the rabbit. So it's dependent on the rabbit to ensure its healthy. In other words, the abusive person, needs their prey so they can look strong. Without their prey they cease to exist, or they are unable to keep their reputation, and they end up falling down a steep hole that is hard to get out of.

This is one of the most touching songs I've ever heard in that it makes me feel sorry not only for the fate of the rabbit (the victim of abuse) but of the wolf (the abuser) as well. The wolf acknowledges, though perhaps all too late, that its life was a vile farce and that he was taught to be a sworn enemy of the animal whom it has finally learned to see for what it is and to love it. To add to the tragedy, even now the wolf's love for the rabbit is intertwined with its instinct to kill, making the relationship between the two doomed whatever its epilogue.

@@galaxywolf4930 BPD is a Cluster B personality disorder. To keep it fairly short, it's a disorder characterized by an extreme fear of abandonment, unstable relationships, unstable self-image, impulsive and/or self-destructive behavior, chronic emptiness, intense anger, extreme mood swings, dissociative symptoms and self harm/suicidal behavior. You technically only need 5 out of the 9 symptoms listed in the DSM to be diagnosed with BPD, though, so we're all different.

I keep coming back to this song after months or years as it's genuinely one of my favorite songs and beautifully done. The meaning, the singing, the instruments, all of it is just mwah 👌 Ps, i interpret this song as a dying, injured wolf trying to chase its final prey, "but the rest of my pack, i have left them behind" i can imagine this genuinely happening to the wolf except he lost them and wolves struggle to survive if not in a pack. Aka, its a wolf slowing down after years, trying to get its final prey by convincing the rabbit to come over OR the wolf doesnt want his final moments alone and he genuinely just wants company and to keep the rabbit warm despite instincts and natural order where wolves should eat the rabbit, finding comfort in the weaker as you slowly become just as weak yourself.
@carelessdreamerАй бұрын
Fr it’s so gorgeous. I personally see it as a metaphor for an abuser due to this song’s companion track “Bones of a Rabbit.” That song is from the perspective of the victim/Rabbit and is much clearer on what it’s trying to say. (The chorus is literally “you play with the wolves, but you sleep with the bones of the rabbit, I was only a child, it makes no sense”) With that song in mind, this one becomes a lot darker because of the more caring tone. Trying to convince the victim to stay and telling themselves that they won’t harm them, only to do so eventually considering the vengeful lyrics of Bones of a Rabbit. In that song, the narrator promises that despite the harm, they will carry on and the abuser will not escape justice.

Either the Rabbit was killed in the end, or it will be killed eventually. The Wolf might (or might not) want to change but it can't, because it has some mental disorder and it doesn't have control over most of its actions. The situation is not good for any of them.

They statements of how dangerous everything else is, the attempts to normalize their predatory actions by distancing themselves from others of their ilk and claiming to just be there for them. The person is attempt to make their victim reliant on them, and as we see from the end of them looking away, it's not worked.
