Glad to see you back on the rock Mani! Cant wait too see footage from Weissewand, visiting this crag was one of the best experiences I had as a climber. I think for a climber with max grade of 7c, a straight of the gates grade would be max 7a, but it depends at the age highest grade was achieved.

I would say that big factor might also be fact, that some people gain lot of weight during "off season" time. For example when I am not climbing/training I usually also change my diet. So like 1 month ago my weight was 64Kg and now I am on 73Kg. That made my difference between "top form" and "current form" very dramatical even in short period. :)

That's some impressive gains. I was 67-68kg when I stopped, now I'm 69-70kg. It's not so much, but of course also a factor.

I recently moved to Graz and realized Steiermark has some sand-baggy grading to say the least. I could onsight 7a's in Leonidio, but Grazer Bergland? 6b if I'm lucky. The route looks amazing nonetheless!

I think it will deteriorate more if the pause is longer so the "straight out of the gates grade" could be much lower but than of course the comebackwave would be even quicker and more pronounced. But I am with you in so far that there is a level that you will most likely never go below if you once had a certain skill level. Especially max strenght stays with you for quite some time. I am always very surprised when I have not climbed in a while and I can still hold holds I did not think were in my capabilities. My endurance however really goes down. I dont know if that is the case for everybody. Most likely the attribute you are more blessed with and that you focussed on for longer also stays longer.

Interesting stuff! My straight out the gates grade is around 6c. But genetic max is maybe 8b, never tried a route longer than 2 sessions and did a few 8a's. Would be interesting to know what influences the range between the two max grades, just genetics?

Ability to execute and route-read is also a factor of course (should be quite good if you really were close to your genetic potential), though it can be mitigated by choosing a route you already climbed in the past, like I did here. AND if you you have gained weight in the meantime, during your break (I was around 67-68kg when I stopped, now I'm 69-70kg, which might not seem much but it is a factor of course). Apart from genetics I think that the greater the range between max and out-the-gates, the closer you actually were at your limit.

Yeah 🎉interesting topics! I’m back to climbing gently after a two years break from long COVID I was at my peak climbing 7C onsight or first try Never tried harder yet I’m back first session 7b/7b+ onsight or first try I don’t know my limitations yet I have check 8a and 8B I’m doing links in the first session with one or two stops I guess I would be able to send in 5-10 sessions but I don’t know 😂 At the moonboard at my peak I was flashing maximum 7a And I’m still able at my first sessions after 2 years to flash 7a but only boulders that are fingery amd technical not the power dyno ones 😅 So I guess fitness is a big factor for me If I can find a climb that is mostly finger and technically out of the gate is 7b/+ I hope getting back to a normal life in 6month and try to reach the genetics limite 😅 I would let you know 😊 Thanks for sharing it’s always a pleasure to listen 😊 Enjoy your family time ❤

bro were you guys ever able to put up the woody (training wall) you had when you rented during the pandemic? if not what was the issue.

Actually I'm working out a solution for the woody right now at the new place. If it works, it will be epic (:

I am very sceptical about the straight out of the gate concept. It depends so much on overall fitness, age, etc. For example 3 months climbing break is totally different as 3 years climbing break. Also when you are 40+ you degrade much faster than when you are 20+. If you would make another climbing break (and no upper body training) for 2 years I am certain you would not climb 7b or even 7a.

Nice one. You should use elderid ohm for weight distribution. I see your girl is pulled pretty high when you fall 😮😊
