When I flew on KLM I always thought the Dutch announcements were English with a northern accent, which I just wasn't quite hearing properly. Also when people crash on Dutch Dashcam footage they sound like Mancs or Yorkshiremen who are so angry they've become incoherent. Or Scousers, who are always angry and inchoherent.

@cecilieb361710 жыл бұрын
To a Norwegian spoken Dutch sort of sounds like a made-up language. You understand very little - yet you feel you are so close to understanding it all. Dutch, Germans and Scandinavians will all understand much of Vegard's gibberish. Try "Jaap Westerdijk at the Amsterdam Mobile Convention".
@Caligula199510 жыл бұрын
Cecilie B well I've been to denmark and sweden recently and when someone was talking in their native language we understood some words but the rest was all just some repeating sounds. when we were listening to it we were like oh i understood a word and now its just like huelehuelehuele ( which it sounded like to me :D ).

Yes. With a little preparation he would have spoken lots of recognizable words. I'm sure he's able to spot what Norwegian words are of Low-German origin. Ex. all the words starting with an-, be- or for-. Then.. jump into it. I think the Dutch would understand. Another rule of thumb: if the word is similar in Scandinavian and English, it's very often a common Germanic word. Ex: body parts, leaf trees, basic food. Melk, egg, brød in Dutch? Should be easy. Ceci from Ekeberg, Oslo. Dutch: Eikenberg?

Absolutely. I'm Norwegian. I've never learnt any Dutch. Had four years of German, two years of French. Give me some foreign papers, German: I'll understand 75%. Dutch: 70% (because Dutch is even closer to Scandinavian). French: 30%.
@Serenoj694 жыл бұрын
@@hannem9799 Form my Dutch side being in Denmark and Sweden on several holidays I came to me that not only the languages but also the countries are more similar to The NEtherlands than to germany. At least Danmark is very similar. I already knew I could read these languages without learning them because I did on internet. I wonder if that would have been possible to the same degree with GErman. Never will be able to asses that as I had to learn german the first three years at school (age 12-15). But aal in all I feel Scandinavia is clearly closer to us in many ways than Germany. I Germany I feel abroad, especially in Denmark I never really felt abroad. Just another province. Oh and when I was talking to my son the Danish host said she understood every word I was saying. She asked me what language I spoke and she had no clue Dutch was so similar. Sadly, while reading Danish is easy understanding it when spoken is really difficult for me. But I managed to comprehend the weatherforecast on TV for 90% which on holidays is one of the most important things...Norwegian when written seems very very similar to Danish but spoken to me it is much easier as is Swedish btw.
