I know you guys werent there but jungeun was a victim of colorism and “not fitting beauty standards” by k-nets so all her fans were on the floor (including me). I remember seeing lovesick girls yt comments from koreans appreciating her talent b/c she was the most stable but saying “its too bad she looks like that.” I’d also say the gp sided with jiyoon in their rivalry so it just piled on the hate k-nets had for jungeun. Once production figured this out, I felt they sided with them too🥲

One of the things I think JYP does right in his recent shows is not telling them the number of members who will debut and saying if everyone does well that they will all debut together. It really encourages the trainees to be more positive and encouraging towards each other like they're already on a team and I think it's healthier for all of them and for the group after debut. Sujung was my one pick during the show but I had the same reaction you did. Keep those thoughts in your head, girl!

53:07 I think the editing made the Saebi and Jungeun situation worse and the production really wanted to paint Jungeun in a bad light. Saebi actually trained longer than Jungeun, so she is more experienced. The reason they didn’t really acknowledge it was because in the beginning Saebi did ask for help leading and Jungeun naturally helped her, I don’t think either of them had any ill feelings towards each other over this.

1. I don't speak Korean so I have no idea about if this was a point of discussion for knetz during I-LAND, but Jungeun's older sister was actually a contestant on My Teenage Girl (which became Fantasy Boys). She was a contestant who was considered a frontrunner in terms of talent, but Korean audiences turned on her hard because she was seen as a try-hard and not humble enough. Her sister, Yoonjung, pretty famously had to do a sudden one-on-one dance battle against another girl who was a vocalist and not a great dancer (this show was Hell on earth). Yoonjung was understandably confident but kind of overdid it and, when the other girl sang an ad-lib to even the playing field, Yoonjung tried to sing the same way and completely botched it. In practical terms it was just a sixteen-year-old making a poor choice in a high-pressure situation, but it was like napalm on her chances. Everything she did afterward was criticized. Poor thing. She was almost exactly Jungeun's age when she was on that show, and she hasn't surfaced since then in entertainment. I really wonder if seeing that experience contributed to Jungeun's anxiety and need to be perfect on the show. 2. I know you're tired of the R U Next of it all, but I think something important to know is how it ended. The show went by Korean and global votes the whole show, and then kind of pulled the rug out from under them at the end by not counting the global votes, only allowing TWO PICKS by votes, and the rest of the members picked by the producers. Jeemin was popular that whole show and ranked consistently high. If the final went by votes, she would have been in the group. So I think during I-LAND, she can't feel secure with her popularity. It didn't get her into the group the first time. 3. This episode confused me a lot with the talk about nasality in Mai. I definitely hear it in her voice and understand the point, but they would then cut to Sujung who, to my ear, is PURE nasal. Especially in this song! I was genuinely watching like, "Is this being lost in translation? Is nasal just the closest word they could find?" Also side note, rearranging the song to cut the second verse (common in survival shows) just makes I Am The Best WILDLY repetitive lmao. To me, half of Jiyoon standing out so much was because she was carrying so much of the melodic content of the song, and her voice just naturally sounds the most different from the original song. 4. You said you would have to be reminded Juwon was in IATB because of her performance, but it might also feel that way because after showing her reaction to being in the bottom-ranked room, Mnet essentially cuts her out of the show. If you rewatch the evaluations, they don't show any of her parts or any reaction to them. Not by contestants or producers. She gets no feedback, no reactions, no interviews, no talking heads. No producer comments after the performance. She was my one-pick and it felt like I was going absolutely insane at the time. No show with 12 contestants should be able to erase one wholesale. It is so clear that Juwon scooted through on the vote and Mnet was going to do anything possible to keep her out of the group. I guess she didn't make any thoughtless comments like Sujung, so the only option was to pretend she wasn't there.

9:54 I know we're all tired of the ghost of R U NEXT lurking around, but despite not even watching it I just wanna clarify for context: Jeemin did in fact make top 6 in votes (#4) in the finale. She didn't debut because 4 out of the 6 spots were producer picks. With that being said, we do feel very similarly about her, I only truly understood what she brings to the table in a later performance, but poor girl needs to get out of survival shows asap this is NOT an environment she can shine in, and after what she went through that's completely understandable.

There are so many girl groups that are chaotic, as a multistan I really don’t know girl groups that aren’t chaotic you just have to watch their own variety - I think sometimes people are harsh on ggs, if you try to get to know/commit to a group you will appreciate them is usually my general advice-if this show is someone’s entry to a group then I think that’s great!

the live audience voting is notoriously bullshit. jeemin could've started singing a song in turkish instead of LVER while standing still and she still would've gotten the highest score because she has a ton of korean fans. jungeun could've given us a mariah carey performance where she perfectly hit the highest notes known to man and brought world peace and she still would've gotten the lowest score cause she's not very popular at all in korea. the audience basically decided who they're voting for before they even got to the taping. it's always like that, nothing to be surprised about.

Yes, you could tell they have an idea of who they want (and don't want in the group). Juwon was NOT popular with K-fans. She'd receive a lot of hate comments about her weight and skin tone and even internationally was super underrated. So when she got that low score, she was like "Ah. Yep, I saw this coming. "

I feel like your commentary about Fuko is so spot on. Sometimes she was so stable to the point of not standing out. Jeemin's struggle with that note made the performance memorable because she was so thrilled when she hit it yk? Anyways the Sujung drama was so fun to watch live because at least in my bubble of the internet everybody immediately turned on her and she became THE punching bag of iland. I cannot fathom why she would say such a thing BABE YOU KNOW DAMN WELL YOU ARE ON TELEVISION!! Last note: who decided to make "the black label remixes" to show off what concepts the future group might do and then make 2 of the songs ACTIVELY SO MUCH WORSE. It really scares me for their debut lmaooo

For Sujung, I think it’s just she’s young and stressed + she forgot about the cameras? I can tell she doesn’t have any ill intent towards Mai or anyone but kpop fans lack media literacy and are ready to jump on anyone who made a mistake.

it’s interesting that you guys thought jungeun was just fine in lovesick girls because i thought it was one of her best performances!! jungeun was definitely hated in korea for a lot of the show mostly because of her skin tone/visuals and them preferring jiyoon to her. like i know you guys said the reactions from netizens were down the middle but i didn’t see a single korean jiyoon hater they loooved her and you’re right about it being a beauty standard thing unfortunately

Not a spoiler but just a nonsensical tidbit that was shown on a later episodes for like 5 sec. To give some context on the jeungun and sebi drama, they've actually been trainees together for 4 years. They are good friends but they would always fight about stupid things and make up right after. That's why I think jeungun was more comfortable being sassy or rolling her eyes to saebi. To me, knowing that context and rewatching that episode it was just funny now. But definitely not very demure and mindful of jeungun lol. Love your show!! I enjoyed iland 2 but I'm enjoying it more with your commentaries. I actually watched iland 1 just so I could watch your iland 1 recaps!!

For the Jungeun low score, I think koreans were kind of turning on her at that point. She was apparently "too perfect" (especially compared to Jiyoon who had a great storyline) and people were getting annoyed, also I think koreans hate her sister who was in My teenage girl or whatever?
