Pinned comment: Some notes about this video: 1. Test your reading speed here: www.freereadingtest.com/
Let me know your speed in the comments.
 2. 75% comprehension on the final test wasn't great. I would hope that with practice I would improve, but still I am impressed with what I could retain for a much faster reading speed (in only a week). 3. Learning speed reading doesn’t mean that everything needs to be read as fast as possible. Novels, biographies, fiction for example can be slowed down, savoured and enjoyed. Research articles, contracts, letters, can be speed read, gathering the information needed.
 4. It’s important for me to mention that it’s my job to learn new things so I was able to dedicate large amounts of time to practising.
For someone else, I think just 30 minutes of practice a day for 30 days could produce some great results! Plus what a great reason to get away from digital, social media and things like that.
 5. I am a huge fan of using a pencil as a pacer - if I don’t use one now (usually because I’m tickling Charlie the Cat) my reading speed, focus and concentration instantly decreases!
I’ll use a pacer from now on for most of my reading. How did I not know about this before!?

If there’s one thing you do as a result of watching this video, try using a pacer. Please let me know how you get on with it. 6. I never really enjoyed reading as a child, I was far more interested in building things or dancing. Reading didn’t seem to capture my attention and I didn’t want to sit still.
As a result, I was bad at reading out loud at school - I would get my words mixed up and stutter. I absolutely dreaded it and it really knocked my confidence. I'm not sure if I had a small learning incapability, or whether I just got shy/embarrassed but it affected me reading out loud going into my adult life, which then prevented me from enjoying reading.

It’s only now in my late 30s and 40s that I love reading. Then again, I read books that capture my interest and I do it to relax and get away from digital.

It feels nice to have a set of techniques which has improved my speed, energy and focus for reading.
 7. This one is a bit whack - during this challenge I often did 10-30 minutes of reading in the morning, in the garden as the sun was rising. It felt nice to get the practice out the way for the day - but as a result of this, I was getting morning light in my eyes which then made me sleep better (morning light sets the circadian rhythm for the brain and body, allowing for better sleep).
Reading didn’t have a direct result on improving my sleep, but without this challenge and a book I wouldn’t have just sat in the garden for 10-30 minutes. This way, I was getting 2 things done at once, actually 3 - morning light to improve sleep, reading practice and learning from the book.
I plan to keep this up as it really made a huge improvement to my overall day and well-being.

Side note: I did use to walk in the morning, but found the houses and buildings blocked the sunlight. Fortunately, our garden faces south so we get the daylight right in our garden. Sitting directly in the light (but not looking at it) made a massive difference to my sleep. Huge!

I’ve waffled on a bit here, but that’s why I enjoy these experiments and challenges as they allow me to gain new habits and learn new things, even if they are indirect benefits.
 8. I squeezed in reading practice when I could - dentist waiting room, hairdressers, waiting for a friend - just 10 minutes here and there really makes a difference and a refreshing change from using my phone.
 9. What a magical power we have these days - an incredible opportunity to download someone else’s experience and knowledge in just a few days, all from a simple and affordable object. This was a great challenge!

Great to have you back 😀I 'm wondering if a speed reading does not " steal" a pleasure of enjoying a story while progressively discovering a story plot . If you need to speed read for your work to analyze and then structure the major outline points from a document / book at the same time ???? I'm a speed reader ... because I cannot put down a good page-turner .

Fantastic video - and thanks for the additional info in the comments - definitely some real take away tips, esp. around sunlight and reading. I’m going to need to build up some arm strength to be able to hold some of my bigger books at eye level! Just wondering; was there any information in your research for this video about e-readers; did it mention any impact on speed or the ability to use some of these techniques when reading on a Kindle or similar device?

@@stretchoxford7835 I'm glad you liked the additional info. the books at eye level bit did make me laugh - my arm and fingers ached after a while. I wondered if there was something to hold the books up for me - a music stand or recipe book holder or something 😂 Not much came up about reading on digital apart from using a cursor when reading on line.

I find point 3 really interesting as I've tried myself before but just found that I didn't enjoy reading novels at such high speeds. Do you slow down reading novels now too or do you still read them a bit faster? Are you going to take on speed listening at all? Listen to an audiobook at 2.5x speed and comprehending it?

Also, i love the fact that you sat outside in winter to read. I don't see that many people do that. Here in Québec City we have those cool little propane lit fires in town with chairs around them and i like to go sit there and read. Can"t do it every day, last night was -27C, but it's nice and the cold adds a certain alertness to it. 🥶

I found this very interesting. I already employ this technique (though I hadn't known it was a 'technique!) If I'm reading a book that I'm taking information from, I'll read it extremely quickly and just take in key points (I read the whole of a long, red light therapy book last week, in about an hour). As you have said: it's not just a case of skim reading; rather, I read the words and absorb them visually without hearing them in my head. If it's a beautiful hook, and well written, and I'm there for the journey, which means the narrative , the language, the atmosphere...then I'll read at a normal pace, saying the words in my head. I feel it would be a travesty to speed read Julian Barnes, Jeanette Winterson or Daphne du Maurier!

How have you never read the words in your head B? It blows my mind - I tried reading your comment not saying the words in my head - I tried so hard that it ended up happening 😂 Any tips? Do you think it may have something to do with how certain people's brain works? That incurred to me when driving this morning and reading road signs - I wondered do I actually say the words in my head, and I think I do 😂
@Buzpud

Probably not fair to say never, but it’s a rare thing. Usually when I’m forcing myself to concentrate on reading something I don’t want to read. Then after a line or two my brain accepts we do need to read it and reverts back to just taking it in without sun vocalising. Sorry no tips as it’s so natural to me but I’m sure it just takes practice. Really pleased for you learning to read more quickly so you can enjoy more books. I’m an avid reader and it’s one of my favourite ways to spend an evening.

@@Buzpud Same for me, I only have to vocalise in my head when I am not "in the zone" but once I am in a kind of flow state I just absorb the meaning. I wonder if this is coming from my childhood/teenager years when I was reading A LOT (multiple hours in the evening were no rarity). So I maybe was able to learn it more easily because I was at a good age for learning ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Studying law at uni. forced me to learn how to read faster. To not get stuck in the text and have a steady rythm. Being able to read without getting stuck feels like such a privilege. I have friends who really struggle due to dyslexia and I admire them so much for powering through and not giving up on text in various ways. Loved it when they felt safe and started texting me as well instead of just calling ❤

I really enjoyed this video! I've also struggled in the past and even now with reading. My mother used to insist on choosing books for me as a child and teen (when I left home) and she'd make me read and test me on the book. If I read a book of my choosing (thinking I would please her by reading voluntarily), she'd tell me to stop and would get me doing housework or other chores. I couldn't win🙄. As a result, it made my relationship with books practically non existant. I'm a very slow reader and my mind wanders. I've recently started 'collecting' books from charity shops and libraries and have managed to read a couple start to finnish over the course of a few months! Your video has really encouraged me to keep trying. I know a good book can be truly rewarding! Thank you for your advice! Going to give this a go!!😊

This was a fun video to watch as I’m an avid reader myself. One technique I use is to read or scan the page in a diagonal movement, I start at the top left of the page and then move my eye down to the right corner. I didn’t think it would work but as I’ve gone back and reread the page again I find that I’ve already read it all 😅

“The Fall of Giants”, by Ken Follet, the first in the “century” trilogy. Follet wrote my favourite novel, “The Pillars of the Earth”, which takes place 13th century England and is about the building of a church in the time of the Black Death. Sounds boring, but it’s an AMAZING read, and I’m currently trying to get Amazon Studios to do it as a 13 episode series. My favourite book of all time.

Oh what fun!!! Did no research o9n my own, just followed your advice. Used the bit about leaving margins. using a pointer and scanning words. The scanning part works easily if you'll just let go and don't try and control things. I did put some time i n getting my pointer. Tried several but found a chop stick is perfect for me. Of course I use a hand made one. Very light and tapered. My hands don't work very well so am gonna have to do something about that. May try a table artists easel or a sheet music holder. Not going to use this all the time though. If facts and learning is my goal, I certainly will. But sometimes when I'm reaDING AN AUTHOR that is a good word smith, I don't want to miss any of the descriptive words. Back to the one word at a time. Doubt I'll even take the speed test. I'm so much faster than before. And I was satisfied then.

What I would suggest is NOT to speed read therapy books. If the stuff is stirred up should be processed and not cognitively but on a emotional level, deeper, slower and with more awareness, taking notes which you can bring to therapy, journaling, processing any way you like....just my suggestion as psychology student...it is not easy to process stuff for a reason..also you dont want to be overwhelmed so there is a nice ratio somewhere...

I've fallen down the Huberman lab rabbit hole as well, so the morning light thing has been drummed into my brain too. 3 mornings are covered by exercise - plus that also delays my morning coffee to well over 90 mins after waking - so triple-stack benefits? Other days I'll have breakfast then take my coffee outside for the early sun exposure, and I've been taking a book out recently and will read a few pages. I think I read reasonably fast, but I also need to retain detail for work reading and when reading for pleasure I prefer to go slower. Too many times I've devoured a book - then read it a second time later and realised I missed about 50% of it. So while speed reading is interesting, it actually doesn't fit too well into why I read.

Hey Michelle, I am pleased you liked the video. That was the hardest one for me and still practicing - however, I try to glance at the words and let them register rather than relying on reading them if that makes sense. I can kind of get into a flow of it after some time, but it's still very odd to me. My friend who does it says, when we see a sign that says 'stop' or 'quiet' we probably don't say the word in our head, except recognise it and its meaning. Does that even make sense? My friend's words didn't make sense to me at first, but it's slowly registering.

I wonder about two things :-) First, how to use a pacer on the touch screen of Kindle (I try to save as much space as possible and reduce the number of paper books, although I prefer them over e-books). And second, I can imagine all the techniques applied in my native language (actually, I read in Czech only to relax and for that, I don't need/aim for speed reading), but I do at least half of the reading in English...I need to do some research on this :-)

The skipping of unnecessary information is always something i've done intuitively. Interesting. I'll have to pay attention next time i'm reading to see if i use peripheral vision.

Do not forget the spiritual side as well. It is very important. The soul wears out as wears out clothes and faith too.... Whoever neglects religion will not live happily.. but we are talking about the true religion and not the fake one... When I always pray, feel better and happy after that, which I will not be able to attain. By sport, not by science..it is a divine thing....for this reason God revealed the messengers and the heavenly books. He could have satisfied himself with knowledge only...but it is not enough for human comfort.......I hope you will try the Islamic prayer movements in Your room...go to the Kaaba...there is a hidden energy and something strange that you will feel....yes, it is an emptying of negative energy and acquiring positive energy....just try Laura....welcome back, may God protect you

for sure! I'm still taking in the information, just in a different way, but also I now have the choice to go faster or slower, using the 'new way' or 'old way' depending on what I'm reading or how I'm feeling.

I read pretty quickly, and I don’t think I vocalize when I read. I wonder if it’s connected to also speaking Spanish and not translating in my head for that. My brain just makes the pictures. I feel like that’s kind of a similar idea.

aha, I am envious of your ability to not say the words. I am still practising, it's getting easier but I often drop back to my default. PS - read your comment vocalising in my head - doh 🤦🏼‍♀️

Super interesting, LT! I’ve always read fast. The focusing on the important stuff I’ve done since having to read journal articles at uni, so I tend to scan-read the dull stuff! However I really struggle with feeling sleepy during reading, so I’m going to try and get the book eye level as you suggest. Hopefully that will mean I can read for more than 20 mins without falling asleep! With that in mind, I’m interested to know if this experiment has altered your reading for relaxation at all?

Hey Anni, I had wondered if those had attended university has a different style or ability to reading with regards to lots of research. It hasn't altered my reading for relaxation as I chose to read faster with these techniques, or slow down. It's nice to have the choice, unlike before when I only had one option.

Reading speed: 362 wpm, accuracy 100%. To be fair, I have to read a lot as a researcher, so when reading a book I read much slower so that I can enjoy it more than rush through the information.

Have you tried mind sight yet? Basically you blindfold yourself and then see things anyway. Wendy over at Facebook might love to train you for a video. I can see colors and shapes, and items in the room, and place my finger right on it. Some can READ. Children see BETTER blindfolded than normally. And through walls and such. No spectacles needed.

I'm not a big fiction fan but sure I would chose the technique that suited the book and way I am feeling at the time - it's nice to have the choice now with a few different methods, as opposed to the one option I had before.

Speed reading is about - Browsing the book - Researching a topic - Previewing - Skimming - Scanning - Skipping irrelevant ideas - Filtering information - Getting the gist - Getting the big picture - Looking for keywords - Jotting down keywords - Summarizing ideas orally - Taking mental notes - Retelling ideas orally - Making an oral book review - Recording yourself I can read 12-15 thousand words per minute. I can read a five-hundred-page book in 10 minutes. The essence of speed reading is getting the gist of the book. As a matter of fact, forget about reading and start looking for information in the book at top speed and make a list of keywords to retell and summarize the ideas of the whole book orally for 10 minutes. Record yourself. As l said, forget about reading the book and start looking for information and collecting ideas that you can pull out from the book. Speed reading is not about reading a text word by word. It's about looking for ideas, collecting information and making lists of keywords that can help you to summarize ideas orally. Your main task is to make an oral book review for 10 minutes with your list of keywords. Explain the topic aloud for 10 minutes in your own words. Record yourself with your cellphone.
