PianoVision is one of the best mixed-reality experiences I’ve tried so far on Meta Quest 3. It helps you to learn the piano by placing a digital overlay on your real piano, showing you what notes to play, providing feedback on your performance, and has lots of features to assist your learning.
This video will cover all of the features of PianoVision on Meta Quest 3, including the main pros and cons. Can PianoVision help you to learn to play the piano? It's time to find out.

I’ve always found learning piano hard because it’s difficult to memorise all the notes and timings but I feel like using this would really help a lot because you can see when the notes are coming and play them, which after a while, you’ll master through muscle memory.

I've been thinking of picking up a Quest 3 primarily for this app. I've had PCVR since 2016 and was regularly upgrading both my PC and my headsets until the Valve Index released. Since then I decided to wait until there was something significantly better before upgrading again. Since covid I decided to get back into music after a 30+ year layoff! I could never play keyboards even then, but I had everything MIDI'd up and could get by. Recently I've invested money in buying multiple synthesisers and am now very tempted to finally learn how to play a little, rather than just program my music on PC or play and record using 2 fingers!! This on a Quest 3 looks like it might be the perfect solution for me with the advantage of the Quest 3 also giving me a PCVR upgrade as well as a wireless alternative for a few games I enjoy such as Walkabout Mini Golf. I would be interested to know what your daughter thinks of this app too, as it sounds like she is quite dedicated to learning how to play.

I loved this video! I bought a piano five or six years ago, and tried to learn, but as I am an old guy, I quickly realized that serious study of piano requires much more effort than I want to make. Even though, I still like to sit at the piano from time to time and give it a try. Sometimes I am more willing to study and other times I am lazy. And I was convinced that this was the relation I would have with the piano for the rest of my life. And just the other day I started to get interested in buying a MetaQuest 3 when I watched some youtube videos about it, and this piano learning application was something that I saw but didn't consider to be so interesting untill now that I saw your video. Now I start to think more seriously about buying VR goggles! Can you make a video showing how you connect the cable from the digital piano to the headset?
@VRLowdown
@VRLowdown 7 ай бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. Connecting you headset to the piano couldn't be easier. Your piano will have a USB-B connector and/or a MIDI connector. You just need a cable with the appropriate connector on one end and a USB-C connector on the other. Once you connect the cable, it should work automatically to detect your notes.

You need a Midi to USB-C cable. Your piano may have a traditional MIDI port, a USB-B port or both, so you'll need to check your piano to make sure to get the right one. You can hear the sound of the piano through the headset and also from the piano depending on your preference.

It can use finger tracking to register the notes, but the accuracy isn't good enough to make it actually enjoyable to use. I had a look online to see what your options are, and I think you may need a USB to MIDI host device to make your piano work with midi and connect to the Quest 3. It looks like the CAMOLA USB MIDI Host Box might be an option, but it's pretty expensive.

Self taught pianist here of 8 years, and this is amazing. I'm actually kind of jealous because I can clearly see people learning so fast with this app when I had to struggle through the traditional method haha. Quick question: one concern I have when looking at this is I'm wondering how easy it would be for people to play the songs they learn through this app without the headset on. Do you find you're able to remember what you played even without referencing the original midi track? I ask because I'm worried having the piano tell you exactly what notes to play when might cause you to only be able to play when you have that visual aid (I know a few people who can only really play piano songs if they have the sheet music in front of them because that's how they trained). great video btw, thank you for sharing. I have an old Oculus Rift, but I might have to upgrade to the Quest 3 now just to check this out (even though I already know how to play the piano, this seems like a super cool way to learn more songs).

There are options to display the sheet music as well to follow along. And there is a memory mode that causes the midi notes to slow disappear. Also there are multiple scales and exercises to warm on.
@VRLowdown
@VRLowdown 8 ай бұрын
Relying too much on the MIDI track/MR indicators does definitely impair your ability to memorize the songs. They do have a memory mode though, where the note indicators disappear over time as you learn the song, and this really helps me to actually memorize them, rahter than just relying on what I am seeing.

But isn’t it better to learn the traditional way (music theory, reading notes)? I heard learning by memorizing where to press without technique and theory (synthesia type “learning”) is not such a good route. But I’m not the expert and am a current self learner.

@jonathankim1999 7 ай бұрын
Yeah idk. It’s up to your style. I definitely disagree with the idea that there is only one way to get good at the piano. I know a few people who can play highly technical songs through Synthesia alone. TLDR yeah it’s good to learn how to read sheet music, but don’t let it stop you from playing

I've tried this application but it's not really suitable for integration with a real piano. The application captures the side keys quite inaccurately. For a short keyboard it would perhaps be better.
