I Learned Tagalog in 7 Days | Part 1 | Inspired by Nathaniel Drew

Hey friends! In this video I challenged myself to learn as much Tagalog (filipino) as I possibly could in 7 days. About this time last year, I came across Nathaniel Drew's video where he learned Italian in 7 days. I think his method is brilliant, and his language learning process inspired me to learn a new language. As a first generation Canadian, I never learned to speak Tagalog. My parents put me in french immersion instead (alors, je peux parler en français, mais j'ai beaucoup de difficultés avec Tagalog). It was never my goal to become fluent in one week. My goal was to learn about my roots and become more connected with the Filipino culture.

When you said there is no word for transgender or cis gender. Actually there is, in Pre-Colonial Old Tagalog. It's very uncommon but there is a word for it. "Pina-laki" since before and you won't see this on the Internet since only old people knows these terms and sometimes it is very rare to see it, Filipinos see gender differently. It was the Spaniards who actually made the Philippines backwards in that culture and introduced Christianism. That's why we have gender neutral statements. Like "Siya" "Niya" "Ikaw" "Ako" those don't have gender specific. It just means who you are as a person. Not as a gender.

These Filipinos were specifically called the Teduray tribe. In their tribe they call "transness" as "mentefuwaley" which means "one who becomes". For transwoman, they call them "mentefuwaley libun", libun meaning woman, hence "one who becomes a woman". For transman, they call them a "mentefuwaley lagey" or the "one who becomes a man". So in essence, LGBTQ narratives are not new in post-colonial Philippines. Mentefuwaleys and the concept of gender & sexuality has been in existence long before we were called "Philippines" and "Filipinos"

We have to understand also that the trend of conversational Tagalog is moving towards Taglish (Tagalog mixed with English) so most LGBT words, which are recent definitions, remain in English.

Hello Jocelyn. I actually am currently living in the Philippines and in grade 9, yet I never passively absorbed the language around me. So I am not doing the best in my Tagalog class, where we have to read tagalog stories and watch tagalog videos and I AM STRUGGLING. So I want to do my best to become at least semifluent so I won’t have to rely on the translations of my friends and google translate.

The brilliance of this video is that you have put together a really efficient system for diving into learning any language, Tagalog specifically. It is a language that, due to its mottled history, is notoriously all over the place. Modular word order, fast-evolving slang, borrowed foreign words, and multiple verb modes (not just tense) are enough to confuse and intimidate newcomers. There's no central, monolithic standard of learning (even in the Philippines) , but your video is a fantastic place to start. ;;Being musical also helps much more than you think-- fun songs repeated throughout the day are effective tools in reinforcing vocabulary and usage. Movies are also great: comedy movies usually have LOTS of visual slapstick so the entry level to understanding them is pretty low. (Learning-wise, ignore the wackier characters and listen to the plainer-sounding dialog-- say, parents and older siblings) :: Thank you so much for making this.

Hi Jocelyn! Bakla is the Filipino translation for gay, not for the entire LGBTQ+ Community. And yes, there are a lot of English words that do not have Filipino translation😅. That is why Filipino recognizes the use of "transliterasyon", or how a local spells a word, based on how he or she pronounces it. For example, in Filipino, it is acceptable for driver to be spelled as "drayber". The same goes for quarantine, computer and many more. Anyways, I hope you enjoy learning the Filipino language!
