It wasn't easy to learn Tagalog, but here's how I taught myself to speak a new language. Filipino (or commonly Tagalog.) is the national language of the Philippines. Learning languages is difficult but satisfying, and it was especially satisfying to learn about the culture and heritage behind the language. To my fellow Filipinos and other Philippine language enthusiasts, Happy Filipino Language Month!

Im a Filipino, born and raised in Australia and have never picked up or understood any Tagalog nor my parents native dialects of Waray and Bikolano as i was always spoken to in English. My mother had the idea that teaching me Tagalog would confuse and hinder my ability to speak English, which is just plain stupid as i was living in an English only country. I have many friends of immigrant parents who can speak their parents native languages fluently as their parents used common sense and taught them their native language first as they knew English would come naturally to them anyway being raised in Australia. A lot of Filipino people, specifically the women, have the philosophy of putting the western world on a pedestal even if it means disregarding their own culture. This is bad for the Filipino culture and if it keeps up, in 50 years time most native Filipinos wont even know their own native language.

I think it's especially difficult for non-Tagalog Filipinos to teach the language to their kids, but I agree with you. At home my parents didn't place enough value on Philippine languages even though they speak to each other in Cebuano. Later they say that they don't understand why we're so westernized when they never gave us access to the culture in the first place.

Dude, that sucks how they didn't speak to you in Bikol or Waray!! I'm a Filipino from Davao, born in the Philippines - Manila, raised in the USA since I was 4 years old, and now in Australia (Filipino-American dual citizen in Australia), and my parents spoke to me in their native languages growing up as well as other other Filipino families. Of course, you'll learn the language of your surroundings through interaction and being forced to use it, but languages spoken at home is much rare. I see this with the immigrant families in Australia, Canada, the UK, Sweden, the US, etc... It's never too late to learn Waray or Bicol just as long as you keep at it. They're still languages (not dialects!) that deserve the same respect! At the age of 30 years old, I am thankful that I still can look back at my parents speaking to me in Cebuano, and yet, I can only feel for the Filipinos who were raised without being taught their regional languages.

Astig pare! I taught myself Tagalog too, pero ang hirap talaga, kasi lumaki ako sa maliit na bayan sa United States. Noong bata pa ako, nag-ingles lang ang mga magulang ko. Keep it up pre! Inggat!

I had a very basic conversation with a old Filipino lady the other day, her eyes lit up like in the first clip. I said “Salamat po” she looked at me and dipped her head and “Tagalog?” And I responded with “My Asawa” and she laughed and said “good choice good choice” 😂

i'm filipino as well and i just stumbled upon your video! to those in the comments, if you really wanna learn how to speak tagalog, my suggestion try to practice with a friend who's fluent in the language! the filipino language is typically very casual and informal, with not a lot of rules (aside from the tenses, it can get a bit confusing) so i think it'll really help to have a conversation with a native speaker on a daily basis (i'm pretty sure you could find one online cos alot of us speak fluently in english anyway!) anyway, ang galing mo na magtagalog! ininspire mo ako na mahalin at halagahan ang sarili nating wika :)

As a native Tagalog speaker who is born and raised in Manila, I think the biggest problem of learning Tagalog is its adaptability, dynamism, and flexibility. While learning other languages like Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, and a bit of French and Korean, I immediately noticed that there are no set rules in Tagalog. For native speakers, we just use the language without strictly minding the rules. For us, practical application of "balarilang Tagalog" or Tagalog grammar makes the language sound awkward. I think it's more of the Tagalog grammar taught in schools is grossly outdated that speaking them would sound weird and ridiculous to native speakers.
@JeremyBurrito
@JeremyBurrito 4 жыл бұрын
That's definitely true. When I was studying from the book, I had to ignore a lot of what I read because my mom said it sounded too unnatural. I think "deep tagalog" sounds cool and it's impressive, but it's too impractical in everyday life
@jacv7870
@jacv7870 4 жыл бұрын
It's impractical in Manila but when you visit the tagalog provinces like Quezon,Batangas,Bulacan atbp,you will be amaze that they still use some deep words.

One thing I like with Tagalog is its grammar, the syntax can even change depending if it's formal or not. Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) takes it further though, it's grammar is so flexible, easy and uses fewer particles. It's akin to the stereotypical 'Filipino-Chinese Tagalog' in terms of grammar, you just need the key words to make your point across.

yeah, i think a foreign speaker is detected by not conjugating verb properly, but even as a native speaker, i could't even properly explain when and how to use different verb conjugation. Now i'm learning nihonggo, aside from their writing system, the conjugation of verb and adjective even the particles are driving me nuts.So you have my sympathy. You are doing great, your way of speaking is well understood, you could even just speak mix of english and tagalog if you are having difficulty. Believe me, even locals have difficult time speaking in pure filipino.

See Poly-glot-a-lot channel on ACQUIRING language. See Prof. Brown's main video at the bottom of the video list. The method is based upon Prof. Krashen's hypotheses. It is guaranteed to work and is comprehensible input as used by polyglots. The only problem is getting speakers to read. Few Tagalog speakers help.

Strictly speaking, Filipino is the national language of the Philippines. :) A combination of most largely spoken languages and dialects in the country. Do note, though, that most of it actually comes from Tagalog and Ceuano. :)

Sakto po yan. Dapat tagalog unahin mo kasi kung unahin mo bisaya, kung pupunta ka sa Luzon area, di kayo magkakaintindihan. Lahat ng Pinoy nakakaintindi ng tagalog so tama ang choice mo to learn tagalog first. Once u mastered tagalog, thats the time u should learn bisaya.
