I'm an American who came here almost 2 years ago. I ended up deciding to live here for alot of the same reasons (American culture was changing for the worse, great location to travel all around Europe, Albanian culture and the people are amazing, Tirana is very easy to get used to and navigate) All of my friends are Albanian, I don't associate with other expats. I find Albanians to be more sincere and friendly and I've got friends here I call family. So I'm grateful for the reception since deciding to live here. I now just married to an Albanian woman. The people here truly do value tradition, family, and just core values I find highly respectable and refreshing. Albanian has officially become my 2nd home and I'm beyond blessed I gave it a chance. If you have any questions or would like to speak with another American and my Albanian wife for any info reach out. I've got a friend for just about everything, and if they can't help surely they have a cousin that can. 😂 Cheers and welcome.

My partner and I (we are retired) are planning to visit Albania in February/March for a month. This will be our "look see" to determine where we might want to reside permanently. We will be bringing our 15 lb dog and are looking (online, currently) for "pet friendly" lodging for the month (maybe longer) that we will be there. We don't want something in a "city center", as we prefer something a bit quieter, but still walkable, and near an indoor pool (for working out). So far I have found Durres with their huge sports center, but I'm not finding a lot of lodging - can you recommend where to look for this online/other? I want to have everything set up before we arrive, so we can rent a car and drive to the place that we will be staying, as it will be a long travel from western U.S. - thanks!

During my “let’s explore the Balkans” wanderlusting moment a hundred years ago (though not really, cause I’m not that old 😅) I visited Albania many times and learned the languages a bit though not well. I will say this though, share the countries beauty and culture, though when you happen upon a hidden gem keep that so secret. The country’s beaches were in a Lonely Planet list years ago and people from other European countries started flocking to them which stressed the infrastructure at the time. Learn about Besa, speak Albanian as often as you can, find friends, and be discerning if and when you decide to date (tell them you plan on staying in Albania forever and see if their interest is still there). Have fun! 🎉

The thing that bothers me so much about travel influencers / digital nomad folk is when they go to a poor country and practically brag about how cheap everything is and how they can move there and have such a great quality of life, while completely neglecting the fact that that is only the case for them because of their privilege of being from America or some other country with access to high paying jobs. I really really appreciate you taking the time to mention that this is not the experience of the locals. It's honestly such a breath of fresh air that you not only mentioned it, but that you included several things people can do to support the locals. Best of luck to you, and I hope Albania is everything you want it to be :) And definitely visit the beaches when you have a chance. Korce is a lovely little city that can't be missed, go to the nearby village of Voskopoj in the winter and try the wild rabbit. Permet is amazing in the Spring. I would go there to eat the pule fshati me rosnica or their homemade jams and bread. The river is so pretty, and there are hot springs nearby. Theth and Lumi i Shalës are musts in the summer. @@SEOshogun I was in Thailand last year. It's great but Albania is slightly cheaper and less visa issues. Thailand has increased in housing due to tourism coming back and making up for what they lost during the pandemic.

$1 USD got 106 Albanian Lek in December of 2022, on my first stint there. Now it's at around 93 Lek to $1. Rent prices have also increased a lot in just the past two years and will continue to go up. Renters must also fork over 3.5 months up front to move in. That's a lot considering that landlords in Albania can be unscrupulous and there's no guarantee at all that a renter wouldn't have all kinds of drama with their landlord. That said, the food is good in Albania and it's still cheaper, for the time being, than major metro areas in the U.S.

I'm an Albanian who lives abroad. I have visited a lot of cities in Europe and I can really say that Albania is the safest country I have ever gone to. This is because there is a strong sense of community. I cannot leave my car unattended in the middle of Berlin because someone will scratch it, hit and run, steal my wheels or worse. In Tirana, this never happens. The only downside is high car traffic tho.

Oh absolutely, shop local, and avoid the big supermarkets where foreigners tend to go. We don’t buy our produce, bread and meats there generally. If it’s looking pretty and packed nicely, it costs double and it’s not even local or organic. Discover the farmers markets, that’s where the best cheeses, olives, fruits and vegetables are. And they are dirt cheap and so much tastier. Don’t make this foreign German and Italian supermarket chains richer, help that local farmer survive.

As someone who traveled extensively before, we gotta stop glamorizing nomadic lifestyle. Frequently traveling is brutal… cultural and language barriers can be stressful. Constantly navigating new cultural, customs and communication issues takes its toll, especially if you’re in places where you don’t speak the language fluently. Also, Travel burnout is real. The constant packing, planning, and adjusting can wear down even the most adventurous spirit I’m so glad I stopped the nomadic lifestyle and came back home. I missed my family.

I can agree with this, it can be exhausting. But she seems to be looking for a new home base first. Then travel for leisure as she feels from there. That takes a huge load off of constant planning and packing. She'll get adjusted over time to Albania or wherever she ends up choosing.

There is no visa process. By having a US passport, qualifies you for a one year visa free stay. If you want another year, you'll have to leave Albania for 90 days. Upon returning to Albania after your 90 day exit, you'll have another visa free year.

Something I've heard a few other travel channels talk about is the smoking. Specifically in Tiranna and Durres. Cafe's being overrun and even walking by they felt like they had to hold their breath. Did you find the same issue with smoking? If so, is it ubiquitous across Albania or are some cities or parts of cities worse than others? I realize you just got to Tirana, so you might not be able to answer about the other cities if you haven't had a chance to get there yet. But if you have any experience thus far, I'd love to know.
@saml849

Europeans don't shirk from smoking nor do they care if their smoking bothers others. In addition, smoking is rampant all over Europe.
