My life totally changed when I became self-employed 10 years ago. It happened slowly. But after settling into my new lifestyle I realized how much life I was missing. Now everyday feels like a vacation. Everyday is an adventure. The same old town I had always lived in came alive with interest. The most mundane - streets, buildings, people - all turned into poetry. All the best to you, WC.

@quayscenes
@quayscenes 4 жыл бұрын
@@aggelos8256 Thank you for asking. My career is not so much one I "chose" as "fell into". There is a long and a short version of the story. To preface the "short version" I will just say I have never looked for or applied for a job. Never. Not once. Interesting jobs always had a way of finding me. When I was in my late 30s, having worked as a Lumber yard draftsman for some 20 years, I was let go due to the recession. They made me a great offer to stay and work out of my office (they just didn't have any money to pay me anymore). So I carried on drawing house plans as I always did. Only now, I was working directly with my clients and working on my own schedule. Since then the Lumber yard has changed hands, but I have still managed to stay in that same old office.

The observing part. No one I’ve talked to felt the way like you described it and I am 100% identifying with it. With my French course we went to Paris last year and while everyone rushed into the shops I stayed outside and well... observed. I was so overwhelmed with the people, the noises, the scents, it was the best feeling ever. I don’t want to be a part of everything, I want to observe. I want to see the beauty of life and truely have time to do it. I wish you good luck on this new part of your life and the journey you will take!

Your thoughts here reminded me of Georg Simmel's text on cities and the mental life where he talks about the "protective organ" urbanites develop to filter out the overstimulation. Walter Benjamin picks up that idea and postulates that architecture is a truly democratic art form that we perceive while distracted by everyday life.

As someone who works in Melbourne I totally agree that you can get swept up in the pace and miss how great the city really is. Before covid hit some friends and I started trying to explore Melbourne a little more and discovered some really great hidden rooftop and underground bars. A favorite spot is also the multi-level carpark uni carpark on flinders street, great memories racing longboards down the levels. The city of Melbourne is so dense, making it easy to miss incredible spots. In regards to work, I recently returned to study after a 3 year break, mainly due to getting caught up in the cycle you talk about in this video. It's a scary thing to quit a job (or in my case cut back hours) but it's also been incredibly exciting. I hope this leave from work means you can have the time to break from the cycle and focus on doing what you love. Your videos about your approach to study and life have really made me reflect inwards and I thankyou for that. I even started reading again after years away from books which has been great (Cal Newport and the Dune series). Keep making great videos man, love your work!

As an artist and a person with social anxiety, I struggle with distancing and integrating myself into the culture and my surroundings. Just as you mentioned in one of your previous videos, they give me inspiration but also they feed off of me. Since pouring everything I feel can get really overwhelming sometimes (especially when I'm on a schedule making artworks for school assignments), I like to take small breaks just to take everything in, kind of level myself with everything thats going on. It's feels obscure that it's my job but also my very being to observe and mark down life itself.

Love to know that even IPhone 7s are ancient now, still using my IPhone 5, gotta say! Also when it comes to living in old cities, it’s quite obvious, in France at least, that most people don’t quite think about the architecture and the beauty of it all, but there is undeniably something about quarantine that pushed people to watch the world around them more, and I have to say I’m the type of idiot to cry over an old cathedral or some other beautiful monument (I know it’s dumb, eh) but there is more and more people just seeing things I guess, instead of just going somewhere they take the opportunity they have to do some sightseeing, and I think that might also be due to having a limited amount of time outside everyday, though I have no idea whether or not it will stay that way in the future I sure hope it will! Anyhow, geocaching sounds like something worth trying!

If you don't want to read so many words, this is the question I have for you. q: What would it take for me to take the courage to get off my ass and create a future that I want to have? Are things really as bad as they seem they are? Will it be worth the risk of going outside of the motion regardless of the results? I may not be in the same situation as you, RC, I do feel like I am outside of what people expect an individual "should" be and helps me understand your point of being "outside of the motion." I am currently a university student in Canada, BC. Since Rona and all happened, not just me but all first-year undergrads have been struggling with motivation to go to post-secondary education and the reason for why. While contemplating this question, I mindlessly travelled around the lower mainland and just realize how much of the world I haven't been to even though I lived in the area for over eleven years. So much culture, so many people around this world that do so many different roles, yet live along with the motion while being clashed by things that are at their utmost concerns. (Honestly, I have no idea where I am going with this) Having an Asian heritage, my parents and their standards wish for me to live in this "motion" and create a "standard stable" livelihood. I think it's very hard with the motivation I have to continue on with post-secondary education while my interests lie elsewhere. I don't think that having my parent's ideal livelihood is a bad idea, and I don't think that having no post-secondary education will "kill" me (in Asian standards lol). It's made me think if it really is a viable option for me to drop out of uni and dedicate my time to trying things out and doing what I want to do instead of using my resources (time, money and skills) to stay in uni to live doing what norms my parents imagined.
