I tend to keep my day’s timeline full of things-but they’re generally things I’m happy to be doing. I’m watching you while I have breakfast, I practice my second language while I’m in line somewhere, and I listen to audiobooks while exercising. I try to be productive AND fulfilling whenever I can. Not every day is perfect, but I generally end a day happy with what I’ve done.

Mr. Waldun, I would love to see you do a video on how we can apply what we read in philosophy and literature to our every day life. I also want to just say, as a way of limiting my time on KZbin, I’ve eliminated most of the channels I’m subscribed but you’re one of the few I’m continuing to subscribe to. Love you work. Thanks!

I suddenly stumbled upon your videos again, remembering how fascinated I became with your "how to write an essay" video and how much I started to watch your videos since then. Just 30 minutes ago i deleted all social media apps, including WhatsApp, and was on the way to a digital detox. This video has been quite a motivation. Thank you for this, and cheers!

While depended on what your job is, I think getting older generally leads to having more structure and not less. As a kid I never knew what the next day would look like. Sure, I would most likely have to go to school but that's only one part of the day. Meanwhile, while you are getting older, your days slowly start looking the same. There are less new things to experience which leads to you perceiving time as a lot quicker than it actually is. I think having more structure in combination with needing to fill every second with some kind of activity (productive or otherwise) is making things even worse. Sometimes it's freeing to just sit around for an hour without doing anything. Some people like to meditate others prefer taking walks. Just make sure to not bring any kind of distractions, no books, no podcasts, no music, just you and your thoughts. As a quick side note: 24 might seem scary but technically your frontal lobe doesn't finish maturing until around 25 years of age. Age to a certain degree is subjective. It's informed by cultural believes as well as where you yourself currently are in life. To an 18-year-old you are old but to a 40-year-old you are still a kid.

Some years ago I noticed I had lost my ability to focus, and as a sort of defense mechanism I started telling myself "Oh, I'll just read this book more attentively next time", "oh, I can watch this movie again and pay attention for real". Then I realised, that was never going to happen unless I made a real effort. The world is never coming back to what it was before smartphones and social media hijacked our brains and fundamentally altered how our minds work. All I can do is look out for myself. So I try to make a conscious effort every single day to live like I did in the early 2000s. I stopped watching TV regularly in 2006, so I figured I could pull this off too. I got rid of as much social media as possible (can't fully abandon youtube or whatsapp). When I go to sleep at night I leave my phone in another room. I designated a spot at home to sit and read a book every day. When I sit down to watch a movie I try to make the experience as immersive as possible. I feel I'm making progress but every now and then I still catch myself pulling my phone out of my pocket for no reason as if I just had to look at it. It's scary.

Going through the same thing rn i don't even use any media except youtube. Every time I go to study my mind tells me to do one thing one little thing before studying like drinking water or taking a walk or organizing some stuff and one little thing leads to another and hours passes by

As someone who's in there late 30s hearing people in there 20s cry about getting older is super annoying. Youth isn't everything it gets better past your 20s. You will know who are better and be more confident.
@danii_maciasr986620 сағат бұрын
I think it is just a matter of time passing by and it being scary regardless of our age (at least since you become an adult). Also, the idea of wasting so much time on social media and doing so unconsciously is terrying: you are throwing away some of the better years of your life doing something you don't like without getting any benefits from it.

I don't really agree. I don't really disagree either. Everyone's journey is different. Very different sometimes. One should not put one experience up on the big screen of their lives and project it as reality and then prescribe it as true and the right worldview... WHEN IT IS J.U.S.T. their INDIVIDUAL LENSE!
@Carito68014 сағат бұрын
I do agree for a different reason. I am a few years older than him, however hearing him speak about his fear of getting older made him lose a lot of credibility in my eyes. It made me think “why am I listening to you”? No hate, just feedback.

Happy holidays! I’m early, because I need this! I never thought I’d be someone who would be affected by doomscrolling. It’s very similar to your situation for me - I am simply trying to reply to someone, but somehow I just scroll forever. I am also a January baby! January 11th to be exact, which adds to the fear of a new year. I’m surprised that I am one year older than you haha - I always thought I was younger, perhaps because you seem a lot wiser than I.

Me either! Until I realized self-control is futile against these algorithms literally designed to get us hooked. Slowly but surely walking away from scrolling.

Online life is fake. All it takes is for your phone or computer to die out and it instantly snaps you back to reality. These names on a screen care nothing about you! We have to get that through our heads. Even those with whom we have online "friendships", if there's some type of disagreement (like happens in ALL real relationships) all they have to do is "unfriend"/block/delete you. (Or whatever the specific term for that is these days.)

Very interesting and relevant video, thank you! I want to say that scrolling creates the illusion of knowledge. For example, yesterday, on Christmas Day, the Russian army attacked the entire territory of Ukraine with cruise and ballistic missiles. There are dead and wounded civilians. The objects of the energy infrastructure were destroyed, so in most cities of Ukraine there was no light and heat for most of the day. Many people scrolled to find out reliable information, but they quickly realized that scrolling would not help. Today, the Russian occupiers are shelling our community with guided aerial bombs and Shahed-type drones. And scrolling also turned out to be useless. It is not surprising, but it is serious literature that helps to survive difficult times. Congratulations on Christmas and the coming New Year!

Saved to watch later cause of work. For me are too things tgat prevent me from scrooling. First is rss feeds. Second is asking myself how i feel after a scrolling session. No one feels better after. Being concious of that makes scrooling less appealing
@Gigusx23 сағат бұрын
You're right about something becoming less appealing the more you're aware of its negative consequences, and it always reminds me of Naval's quote on this: "Let’s say I’m trying to quit smoking. There are techniques I can try, but they’re always painful and difficult. Often, a moment will come when I see myself in a new way that allows the habit to disappear by itself. I get a diagnosis of lung cancer and understand I’m going to die, or I see a friend get in trouble with similar bad habits. When I see something clearly enough and understand it, the bad habit can dissolve by itself."

Keep up the good work.

Great insight for most of the video, the "experiencing duration" was super interesting! But I am a little disappointed that the solution is just app blocking. It's never worked for me. Nothing stops me from just deleting the blocking app and back to scrolling. My screen time reminder on tiktok just gets snoozed. I'm glad it works for you, but wish it did for me too

I also turn 24 in January 2025 and I am waiting for my brain to full develop and this anxiety to stop. I know it’s a utopia because my reality is chaotic but hey! I am going to try ✨ what I keep noticing is that my scrolling increases during holidays. It’s weird but not that much weird because I think I tend to relax more and since I don’t work during holidays I tend to look at my phone more often.

About having structures in life: This is why I love watching series that come out weekly. I feel like I have something to look forwards each day, it forces me to keep track of what day it is today, and when the next episode comes out, I make time for it, so that I can watch it focused with no distractions. Instead of feeling like the week passes in a second, it stretches out and feels longer when I have to wait for the next episode. Doesn't sound like much, but compared to the alternative of doomscrolling I'm really happy that I found this way of 'wasting' my time instead, it makes me feel much better mentally.

24 is sooo old, lol. Try 34. It hits different. I did not think you would discuss time vs duration in a video like this one, but you did! Sometimes scrolling or other low effort activities can be helpful for those who are overstimulated. Having ADHD, my mind runs in a thousand different directions at once. That being said, I need to start a new book today. I'm deciding between a lighter read or maybe going full force into one of those monstrosities I have on the shelf, taunting me each time I walk into bedroom stacked with books lol.
