U.S. doesn’t have to be lonely, but combine working too much, commuting everywhere due to long distances, stand-alone houses, a culture of abandoning our elders, excessive consumerism, and you have a recipe for loneliness. I’ll take minimal belongings, a small place to live, and quality relationships with family and friends any day. Valencia would be a great place to do that.

I get sad when I see comments made by americans saying that they would gladly switch from a more self-centered and consumerist society for a more people-oriented and simpler society, because it shows that many people there isn't happy with the way they live (I understand that). In the USA it's common for people to give lectures about this and that subject and nowadays, with a so much influencial social media, I think that americans should share their dislike for the way society works there, so they influence others to live a healthier and happier life, so their society would be fearer and happier!😊

I moved to the Andalucían mountains from Barcelona where I lived for 6 years. I found Barcelona to be full of people and many Americans yet I saw much loneliness. I decided to leave in 2020 because of the lack of community and transient lifestyle. I literally started driving south to Andalucía. I landed in a beautiful mountain town and I bought a nice big home with views in the town main street. That was 3 years ago now. I have never had so many friends, so many activities that don't involve restaurants or bars or alcohol and so much beauty in my life. I am often in complete silence and tranquility. I can be alone but never lonely. I say hello to everyone. They all know me. I am the only American in a town of 2,000. Best move of my life. Cities are overrated.

I hate to burst the bubble of anyone watching, but moving to Spain is not a cure for chronic loneliness. It might seem that way in a city like Valencia where so many people speak English, but if you’re in a different area without a lot of foreigners and you can’t speak Spanish, you’ll have some of the loneliest times of your life! That being said, it can also be enriching and enjoyable to experience the scenery, food, and culture, but without speaking Spanish, you’ll really struggle. (Voice of experience here!)

Well said. I have had the opportunity to travel for so many years and have spent months and months in both Italy and, more recently, Spain. As I type, I am in Barcelona, and last year I spent two months in Spain, including almost two weeks in Valencia. The key is inside yourself. Somehow I learned to be so happy with myself. I find happiness from within and take pleasure in whatever things I decide to study or do every day. A book called The Power of Now, read with an open mindset, will do wonders to let you realize all these people out there chasing something that does not exist in another place and other people selling them on a life of happiness. At the same time, they make money off of their perceived loneliness. Use Valencia as an example = After the newness wears off. After seeing that fancy all-white Arts and Sciences building. After seeing that long river that was converted into a park. After walking the beach a few times. What are you going to do every day? Do you have to work? Are you retired? Here is what it comes down to since I have a relative and a few friends in Spain and Europe. You have to like going out to Bars and drinking alcohol a lot. You must enjoy going out, spending money on food and drink, and meeting up with people for hours. In Spain, this is often done at 9pm at night or even later. This "social" gathering sometimes last past midnight. If you like or want that, then Spain is for you. I am lucky in that I get to have my American cake while being able to travel the world for a few months each year. I get my Barcelona fix. I get my Tuscany awe mouth drop. I get my Thai food and, hopefully, will soon experience my first Kuala Lumpur goosebumps (FYI just experienced Edinburgh in Scotland and that is a fantastic city to visit for visual sensation and a foodie heaven - Try The Black Grape restaurant for an awesome experience AND Edinburgh has cooler awesome weather in the brutal heat of summer). For anyone and everyone, truly take the time to put the emotion out of it and give an honest self-reflection on what you want to do in the day-to-day of your life. OK time to put down the laptop this morning and head out into Barcelona. Another day of 90 degrees scorching heat surrounded by tens of thousands of people all looking for something to do. Just so you know, Barcelona foodie tip = Tapeo and Arcano are the best two restaurants, but make sure you snag reservations because this digitally connected world has led to everyone searching Google and booking these places in advance. No permanent friend connections will be found at these two places, but good food will be found. Find happiness and connection where you live now. It is there if you simply put in the effort.

@@tobarragl Yes, this channel has really a quite biased view on the USA (in a too negative way) and on Spain (in a too positive way). The biggest problem of Spain is the economy as you say: huge unemployment and bad salaries for those how have a job. Of course, Americans who come to Spain with their big bank account that they filled in the USA do not notice that. (But they drive up the rental prices etc which make the cities almost unaffordable for regular Spanish people.)

Antoanetta, its almost as if you read my mind. I am noticing the increasing isolation of people in the US and, as someone who lives here, I am feeling loneliness encroach upon my own life. When I was younger, I was seduced by the Hollywood image of the lone wolf hero, who was self-sufficient, and who appeared to not need anyone. I was enamored with the independence and strength of these protagonists - frequently played by men like Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Van Damme; men who seemed to embody machismo. Its only as I got older, and started to experience living a life without people, that I found this "ideal" to be such a nightmare. I found it to be an illusion assiduously nurtured by the media to shape people to be status seekers instead of connection seekers. It is a life that leads to despair. Its a life without purpose. This issue is not talked about enough, except by a few psychologists and socialists on podcasts. So I appreciate you bringing this topic to the forefront.

I’ve been studying this issue for years. America isn’t the loneliest country, but one of the loneliest Anglo Saxon countries in the world. It’s a huge public health issue in England, Canada and Australia also. I think the Latin American countries and Southern European countries have more of a community oriented attitude and cultures. I won’t say that every place is lonely in the US, but I would imagine having a tougher time of it in cities like LA and Boston. I think there are many variables that promote connection and factors that promote isolation.

I think the issue is very complex. Some Latin American countries also suffer from high rates of depression and alienation. Also, American and Anglo culture IS very community oriented: this is why these countries and their institutions function so well.

Back in 2003 I had an opportunity to work in Mexico. For almost 2 years I commuted between the states and Mexico. As time passed I found it harder and harder to return to the states. The culture of caring and family in Mexico highlighted the direction of how I felt the US was moving in the opposite direction. So in 2005 I moved to Mexico and have lived in Mexico ever since. What initiated my dissatisfaction of the direction of the US only became worse over time and brought us to where we are today. I think the loneliness and your video is a sobering memory of what I felt back then. But I do think its more than loneliness. There is so much anger and lack of caring for others, particularly those who are different than the people immediately around you or me. With the growth of tourism and retirement in Mexico there are already issues that have developed as time has passed. So, like you did, I am moving to Spain.

Antoanetta you said it like it is about the USA. I think that is why I have never felt like a true American culturally. I am Latina ( Sephardic Jew) and a Bahai since I was 20. It has been very difficult for me to live and work in this society , because of the idea that it is "everyman /woman for himself/herself." I do not ascribe to that and was not raised with that concept. Becoming a Bahai also supported the notion that we are -one world and mankind it's citizens. I have ascribed to the tribal idea for so long that when I have worked jobs or had my own business in the past or did acting/music for a living I was internally sad . The business world did not support community. I see the younger generation is demanding changes and I salute them. I also see that not only is it an individualistic society here it is very focused on what you have . I was in an area of Denver Metro today on personal business and after I was done I said to my husband , why would anyone want to live there? It was nothing but heavy traffic, commercial buildings and it felt sticky. He agreed. When we went to Europe for the first time in 2019 we had something to compare it to. Spain felt like our kind of home. Immediately we made friends. We were there on two different trips and people in Malaga said where have you been ? We were in a crowd and they actually asked us when we returned where have you been. They were happy we were back. That would never happen here in the USA unless in a very small town. Our hope and strong desire is to be able to move either to Spain or to Norway to be close to our kids and granddaughter. In Bergen last year we were impressed with the people we connected with. We noticed people enjoyed nature and life. None of these countries are without problems but overall I did see people felt more connected to each other than here . Thank you for a wonderful video!

Not in Florida where I lived no one ever said hi or even looked at anyone they were extremely stuck up and rude where I lived. Here in Valencia it’s nothing like that everyone says hi and wants to talk to you and get to know you and they are most polite people I have met never met much people that were polite in the states.

After being living 30 years in the USA, my observation is that for many people, loneliness is a choice. In the Midwest and specifically in West Michigan, most people do not let you enter their circle unless you look like them, have the same financial status and common interests. It is hard to make friends or even have a casual conversation with sincerity.

I'm from Australia. It's very much like US. I moved to Valencia in 2006 and it was the best year of my life. At the time there not many IT companies there and as software engineer I had to move to France. Now after 18 year of living in France I am moving to Andorra. Life in Europe is incomparable to the anglo capitalist culture. I'd never live in any English speaking country ever again.

Here’s the thing, I don’t need to chat with everyone on the street to not feel lonely, I just would like to see children playing and old people holdings hands taking a walk. A sense of normalcy. Good video. The lonelyness is not a state, but an attitud. You choose to be lonelyness or not. The same thing is for example that you can choose let others think for you or you think for yourself. The most people usually choose others (politicians, mass media, etc) think for they. Almost everything is in the attitud of everyone. "What do I choose for myself and my life? (suits or need for me or my life really)" This is one of the first questions that everyone should must to do to ourself in our life. Not the last question. Regards.

I live in the US moving to Alicante spain for a english teaching job. I dont know what she did here but i have a ton of friends amazing co workers family an Amazing wife which of course is coming to Spain too. Actually its a bit bitter sweet for me. I am moving because i want a new opportunity to travel and live. I got one with Spain. But alone i am not if anything ive branched out connected with more people through social media. I believe it’s designed this way in the US. It’s much easier to control people and the narrative if we’re isolated. My wife is about the only person I ever talk to but I wouldn’t say I’m lonely. I’ve been like this my entire life so I’m obviously use to it. I’m planning to break that situation in a couple months when we move to Europe.

Moving to Spain was a great for me mainly because I understand it because I have hispanic parents. I don’t speak it well but I am able to get around if that makes sense and people at least can understand me so. Yea definitely what that person said above me learn the language it definitely makes it easier. I am studying abroad and also learning more Spanish in order to communicate better :)

La tecnología está en todos los países, y no es la culpable de la soledad. Lo que importa es la cultura y costumbres. La cultura española implica relacionarse diariamente entre amigos, familiares y desconocidos. En general, somos gente amigable, alegre, natural, espontánea, solidaria y empática. Si un extranjero quiere encajar tiene que aprender el idioma, eso pasa en todos los países, pero en España es muy importante. No tiene nada que ver la cultura española con la francesa, o con la alemana, ni con la inglesa. Europa no es homogénea, en ningún país europeo la gente es como en España, ni siquiera Italia. España es especial y muy diferente. España es muy acogedora.

No one wants to see the elephant in the room in the USA. If you have a system driven by productivity only, loneliness is a by product of this. There is no other way around this. Individualism is fine and it’s not the reason. It’s not like the people of Spain lack on this; after all a land of great artists of all kind just to put an example. It’s the relentless focus on projecting this individualism towards a materialistic result what is causing this loneliness epidemic. In other words, in America, you are an “individual” if you are engaged in some sort of activity that maximises wealth. However, you can exert your individuality doing absolutely nothing or having a cup of coffee on your own. The etymology of the word leisure is “to be allowed” (from the latin licere which I guess it’s the same root of the French “laissez” that neoliberals took for their perfidious laissez faire, anyway I digress) which brings me to the fact that there is nothing more representative of true freedom than to be allowed to do nothing, or nothing productive at least. To end this epidemic of loneliness in America, and perhaps counterintuitively, it’s not going to be enough the use of technology, apps, top down approaches and whatnot. America needs to truly “allow” their citizens to have quality leisure time, meaning unproductive time. The culture that will eventually emerge from that is one that is less lonely, more communal, and more connected. Without necessarily vanish the glorified individuality. For the simple reason that there are many ways to have fun during idle time but chief among them is with likeminded people. Some call them friends.

Deberíais explorar primero vuestro propio país. Vivís en ambientes tóxicos y América es muy grande, llena de buena gente por conocer. La endofobia que destila el vídeo es muy repulsiva, me recuerda a la que se paractica en mi país. España es muy variada y mucho menos elegante, distinguida o divertida que como os lo pinta este vídeo. Vuestra soledad será aún mayor en el extranjero. La mayoría de vosotros ni siquiera es capaz de leer estas líneas, no entendereis la mayoría de ambientes con los que interactuareis. España es muy diferente fuera del ambiente turístico, laboralmente, paisajisticamente, el clima infernal del verano, el ruido omnipresente, los núcleos cerrados de familia, amigos en donde apenas tendreis cosas en común, el infierno fiscal si montais un negocio, etc.. Es muy fácil si ya hay un núcleo de americanos apoyándose entre sí y viajas a este lugar, pero funcionaría lo mismo en cualquier otra parte que logre reunir gentes con intereses comunes, el sitio será solo un decorado. Nosotros, los españoles, también crecemos en un ambiente con edificios bonitos y gran variedad de restaurantes y demás instalaciones turísticas y no nos parece estar en un paraiso. El Paraiso os va a durar unos pocos meses, salvo que tengais dinero, tengais facilidad para conocer gente, querais fiesta continua y cambieis frecuentemente de lugar. Pero esto no es lo que se os vende aquí.

This guy wants to fight a problem but he isn't viewing things as they are! At 10:20 he talks about ways to create a fast way for people to get friends and friendship is something that should happen spontaneously (not something artificial and fabricated) and slowly! You go to the gym, or to a theater company, or to dance class or whatever, and you meet people, then you talk to them, then you feel fine with those people, then you start to feel connected to those people; that's the way you'll find friendships! That ready-to-serve mindset is what boicot any possibility of changing things! Other thing is the idea that friends are people we have a lot in common with: not necessarily! Of course you have to find some connectivity but what makes you different from other people/ other people different from you is what enriches realtionships the most! What's the point of having friends that are our own echo?! Besides that it would reenforce the idea that difference is bad or something to be afraid of!

I think loneliness is a state of mind. If there are 8 billion people on the planet there is no logical reason to be lonely. You don't have to travel to another country to not be lonely, you can step outside and talk to your Lyft driver too. Just because the SG said it does not make it true. They want you to feel lonely. If you want friends be friendly, it's really that simple. ❤

Less lonely through technology? I would argue for the contrary. Turn off all those gadgets and electronics unless you need them to make appointments right then and there. No more couch potato, letting the TV fill your brain with white noise. Get off the social media addiction and go outside. Look up from your phone and talk to the people around you. Even if you don't actually talk, if you are present you will feel yourself among people. Might help if you live in a walkable neighbourhood. If you are in solitary confinement in a metal box on wheels for hours each day that doesn't help either. As for the US: it will need a massive shift in culture: it was a conscious effort to push individualism onto people to make each one stand alone and for himself. Disconnected people won't form unions or make other kinds of trouble and are far easier manipulated. Suburbia introduced social distancing long before the virus made that appearance.

A lot of Americans are totally miserable in the U.S. (to look patroitic, will never tell anyone that) but being so afraid of other countries, thanks to ruling class installed world leaders/politicians that promote fear and hate, and the TV blowing up the small amounts of bad in the world into a big monster, most have no interest in traveling abroad to learn the truth about other countries, so remain in their comfort zone until they die bored and miserable. When they could have had a much better life abroad. And no, everyone does not want to move to the U.S., to live like Americans, in the land of illusions!

EU🇪🇺 has been influenced lately by the US in trending topics nd so on nd EU🇪🇺 absorbed as if all is for granted. Lots of positive things nd that's great if it's for the better but overtime we learned that this so called societal progress came with consequence nd an underlying silent killer ( as we see with diseases) . It's a bit comparable with the introduction of the EU🇪🇺 moneyflow now years ago what the government claimed we all would benefit from it, nd look what happened..this societal progress divided people. Those who benefit separate themselves from the group of people that financially are less lucky. Nd that's where loneliness begins.. Societal progress is a necessary thing nd we all need it nd have the right upon. All depends on how local nd country governments put efforts in maximizing togetherness. Here in BE🇧🇪 it's a general result that inhabitants of cities feel the most lonely, that's where population are most dense. So that's an overall concern. I live at the northern part of province Antwerp where economics flourish but social life is poorly. Each nd every one Lives on their own island trying to avoid social contact. Thus this far it has come..if we had known this like 12 yrs ago we'd never moved in here. It makes a miserable Life let alone getting in touch upon social level. Nd the US are doing even worse.. it's a bad tendence. It's one of the reasons why we decided to move to Valencia in a timespan of 2,5 yrs from now. We find inclusion in society mostly important nd no one is left behind. Antoanetta you spread the message so clear nd with concern ; maybe we can help each other cause it's of Life importance. Where is your academic data to back up your assumptions that this is a U.S. problem? Loneliness is a worldwide problem. True connection to another individual has been lost due to social media. You are not sharing accurate information; only information that is skewed and promotes your consulting business. Globalization is a fact and it takes emotional intelligence and work to develop true and meaningful relationships. Also, you need to make a distinction between family vs. social acquaintances; Spaniards value family and so do most Americans.
