3:35 Edgeworth: I'm your client! So that got me thinking. And one thing led to another and now I have a theory that I think works with most of the nonsense various characters spout throughout. So here goes: Edgeworth anonymously hired Phoenix to defend Pearl because he didn't think Pearl was guilty but was somehow forced to prosecute her. He planned to let Phoenix win so she wasn't found guilty. However, he found out the truth about Maya and tried to persuade Phoenix to back off the case because he didn't want to put Phoenix through that and thought that the victim was corrupt and had it coming, also hiding the knife. He tried threats at first and then met up with him when that didn't work. When Phoenix still wasn't persuaded, Edgeworth revealed that he himself had hired Phoenix. Before he could say anything else, Phoenix found the dagger and Edgeworth left. The forensic report found Ema, Edgeworth and Maya's fingerprints on the knife (I guess Ema picked it up at some point during the whole thing). Phoenix, thinking that Edgeworth's actions over the past few days were suspicious, jumped to the conclusion that he must have been the killer. Then, Maya confessed and the session was postponed due to Phoenix leaving. Now for the twist... Previously, a criminal organisation run by a mysterious person known only as Wilbur had been notorious for extorting businesses and blackmailing people, amongst other crimes. Maya had been trying to take it down after it somehow ruined her life. She'd joined it to take it down from the inside and had discovered that Wilbur wasn't real. He was in fact just a figurehead for the organisation invented by it's actual leader, an ex-cop now judge. Before she could tell anyone, he found out she'd been snooping and she was forced to kill him. A witness saw her fleeing and mistook her for Pearl, leading to the whole situation. The organisation had broken up after the death of the judge and the police had noticed this. When taking to Phoenix in her cell, she tried to allude to her motives by calling him 'Wilbur'. She couldn't outright say it because she thought other cops could be part of the organisation and didn't want them knowing she knew. Phoenix didn't understand as he hadn't had much contact with the organisation and was just confused. At the execution, she tried one last time to tell them the truth by saying, "Wilbur isn't real!". Phoenix still didn't understand, but Edgeworth knew about 'Wilbur' and the fact that the organisation had recently stopped causing problems. He tried to stop the execution so that they could investigate this but the judge wouldn't listen and went ahead with it anyway. Maya picked up on Edgeworth's understanding and frantically tried to explain before it was too late. "Goodbye, Wilbur" and "Time to come with me, Wilbur" were both her trying to say that she'd killed the organisation's leader. "The Sun shines on traitors" referred to her double-crossing of the organisation. When she died, Edgeworth quickly left to check up on this as he'd understood at least some of it. Not wanting more delay, the Court called in Godot to replace him, but the trial was closed after Phoenix passes out. While unconscious, Phoenix dreamed of a conversation he'd had with Maya the day before her arrest, which had been his birthday. He'd woken up after a nightmare to her phone call and she'd really helped cheer him up. For once, he hadn't worked at all the whole day and they'd had a great time. It was his last happy memory of her.

She was institutionalized afterwards, though I don't know for how long. She might even still be there.
