"Carcass are an English extreme metal band from Liverpool that was formed in 1986. They are regarded as pioneers of the goregrind genre. Their early work was also tagged as "splatter death metal" and "hardgore" on account of their morbid lyrics and gruesome album covers. Their fourth album, Heartwork (1993), is considered a landmark in the melodic death metal genre. Carcass were also one of the few death metal acts to sign to a major label, with Columbia Records handling North American distribution for Heartwork, while the album was distributed worldwide by Earache who released all of the band's albums up to and including Swansong (1996)." - Wikipedia quote.

If a band isn't Metallica or Maiden, according to mark-asses they're "underrated." When people overuse that term calling hundreds of bands underrated the term loses its meaning. Carcass are one of the most influential bands in all of extreme metal. They went from grindcore then later laid the foundation of what became 'melodeath' with Heartwork.

Arguably one of the best death metal bands of all time. Symphonies of Sickness is a classic. Love your recognition and appreciation of this great band. Also kudos for taking a dive into the lyrics. Back in highschool my friends and I used to joke around and come up with our own Carcass-esque lyrics. Trying to be as sick, silly, and vulgar as we could. I saw Carcass play with Death and Pestilence. Carcass and Pestilence were amazing. Death played about a song and a half until someone threw a cup of beer at Chuck. Then he got pissed, stormed off stage, and never came back.

I took Heartwork to a teacher for my first lesson when I was about 14. He asked me how I learned the the majority of the song by ear. He was actually pissed because he couldn't play along. I just wanted to understand how scales and harmonization worked and he got all kinds of butthurt that a kid could play faster and cleaner than he could. After 2 lessons I opted to just stay on my own path, Haha. Sounds like you had a great teacher!

Carcass is a band that is somewhat hard to really contextualize without understanding what the scene was like when they first appeared. What they did was so extreme, especially visually that it was an absolute smack in the face even within the perimeters of extreme metal. They garnered a lot of fans initially for that extremity, even though the music was somewhat subpar by the contemporary standards at the time. But they got on board and practiced their asses off and got very good very fast. So that by the time "Necrotism" hit the shelves, they were a grind machine, with all the components coming together to make Carcass truly legendary.
@travisspaulding2222
@travisspaulding2222 Жыл бұрын
I always felt that Necrotism was the perfect bridge between their grindcore albums and their melodic death metal albums. It was brutal as fuck, but you could tell they were starting to get more of a sense of melody. It's a lot of people's favorite Carcass album, and I think that is why, plus the fact that a lot of us die hards, it was the first album we heard by them. It was for me anyways, lol.

@@charlifinnie2712 yeah, right there with you. When I saw CC's "Eaten Back To Life" in the record store I had to buy it. And in truth I just giggled like an idiot for about an hour during that first listen, the music was solid but the Over the Top lyrics and visual just had me in stitches. Interestingly enough, I remember exactly the day I bought that record because I went up to the register with that album, a copy of Annihilator's " Never Neverland", and Queen Latifah's " Ladies First", and the Digital Dnderground's "Sex Packets" album. Suffice to say, the guy at the register had a hard time processing my somewhat crazy diverse collection.

Their album “Heartwork” was the full transition of carcass into being more thrash metal. It was a very polarizing album but it was a landmark moment especially with Sepultura releasing “Arise” and “Chaos AD” around that timeframe transitioning their sound into more tribal elements that led to the one of the most important metal albums of 90’s with the “Roots” album. Out of all those albums….what it started was the Swedish Melodic Metal, or also known as “The Gothenburg Sound”. That sound ties directly back to those records by Carcass and Sepultura. It spawned In Flames, Opeth, Nightwish, Soilwork, and Arch Enemy….with Archenemy forming out of the ashes of Carcass

Album cover for Heartwork was a sculpture done by H.R.Gieger - the Swiss chap who did the Necronomicon (art book) which inspired the whole xenomorph theme and the organic art style for the film ALIEN. - but you knew that - still I like to think when Ash is dissecting the facehugger - he had previously been listening to some choice cuts of Carcass as he pokes and prods the little critter. "You still don't understand what you're dealing with, do you? A perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility. And Bill Steer on guitars - sublime."

I love how you're reading those lyrics, and I'm unable to pronounce most of these "big words" even as a non-dyslexic person 😅 Heartwork's songwriting is really interesting to me as a former Eng Lit student. I definitely can see some shakespearen-esque tonality in this mortal coil, especially in poetic structures of songwriting. Carcass was influential for grindcore which is noticable in their earlier albums such as reek of putrefaction and symphonies of sickness. They kind of shifted to more of melodic side of death metal which is also beautiful. I'm glad you reacted to this band. It's one of my favorite bands as well.

The Heartwork album changed metal, and there are so many metalheads that don't know it. Besides being one of the defining albums of melodic death metal, they also changed guitar tone forever. Heartwork was one of the first extreme metal albums to use the Peavey 5150/Mesa V30 cabinet combinations, and the guitar tone they captured is still heavily copied today, even if they don't know that they are copying them.

I sort of liked their early stuff but they got so much better on Heartwork thanks to the addition of Mike Amott on guitar. He's the guitarist, founder and leader of Arch Enemy nowadays.

Carcass is a pure legends of metal for me! Once having heard their unique sound, I could not calm down until I listened to the entire album. And I was just delighted with their arrangements, brilliant riffs, full-fledged drums.I have always been impressed by solos in songs, each guitar tells its own sensual story and it's just amazing! Thanks for your review, that's exactly how I felt when I first heard this incredible band! I recommend reviewing the album Necroticism, a true relic🤙 My favorite riff in the song Genital Grinder, yes it is simple and short, but it is in my heart from the very first seconds of acquaintance. Jig-Ai - Genital Grinder (Carcass cover) tribute to the legends🤙Hello to everyone whose feets start to beat the bass drum while listening to the band🤭🤙
