Chaos AD is probably one of my favorite Sepultura albums, I don't think you will be disappointed at all. I honestly loved all of the Max/Iggor Era Sepultura material from Schizophrenia through Roots. Some of the later Sepultura material after Max left is ok, but still will never be able to hold a candle to the albums previously mentioned. They were absolutely on fire at at their peak prior to Max leaving, imo. it's a real shame actually that they couldn't maintain that classic lineup.

That'd be one of the best choices, it surprised me that you jumped Chaos A.D. album when it is classic one by Sepultura (songs like Refuse/Resist and Territory are classic in live performances), hope you make that one 'cause it really rocks (and makes the perfect transition from Arise to Roots), that being said, you reacted to a band that (I don't wanna say "created") put in the map two different music subgenre, death metal (transitioning to thrash metal) and nü metal, that's why you noticed such a drastic sound change in their music.

Part of the explanation for Max Cavallera's vocal style is that the band is from Brazil, and so with Portuguese being their native language, the process was to write it, then translate to English for the recording.

Im a "little late" to the discussion, hehe.. but i disagree. I much prefer earlier Sepultura (specifically "Beneath the Remains", and the album featured in this video, "Arise"). In fact i was so terribly disappointed with Chaos A.D after the monster that was "Arise" that it was the last Sepultura album i bought. I've only heard a couple of songs of "Roots", and they were not good. After that i've not heard anything as soon after, the band fell apart (Cavalera's leaving, etc).
@serroche
@serroche Жыл бұрын
'Beneath The Remains' album was recorded during the hot nights of August in Summer '88 in Sao Paulo, with Scott Burns coming down from NY just to be their studio engineer. The budget Roadrunner gave them was so low (8.000 dollars) that they have to record during the night because it was cheaper to rent the studio during night hours, and try to sleep during the day whith outside temperatures of +40ºC, and they survived eating mainly scraps and ham sandwiches in the process. Luckily after the release the band went big worldwide and they started doing well financially.

The version of Troops of Doom you listened to is actually a re-recording they did in 1990 (between Beneath the Remains and Arise). The original is actually a lot more raw,believe it or not. They added the intro on the second version. Also, the covers for Beneath the Remains, Arise and Chaos AD we’re done by the fantasy artist Michael Whelan. Nightmare in Red is the title of the painting for the Beneath cover. That t-shirt was my go-to through most of high school.

It's interesting to hear you comment on the heat, as some of my earliest memories of Sepultura were during a summer in 1990 when a tree had fallen in this yard of the house I was renting and it was the middle of balls hot summer... and we had no other way to get rid of it except to cut it up and burn it so I remember listening to "Beneath The Remains" at full volume at 3:00 in the morning hacking this thing up with a chainsaw and burning it in the fireplace where it was giving us all sweat lodge hallucinations from the hot pervading every pore of our bodies. It was very metal. By the by, it is an interesting note that from a production standpoint the "Beneath The Remains" album was one of the first that ushered in the era of modern thrash and Proto death metal production techniques , with the result being a appeal to a wider market. The engineer, Scott Burns, was one of the very first to really take seriously how to get music that fast recorded in a clean manner where you could really hear all the instruments and the articulation of said performances correctly. As a result bands flooded Morrisound Studios in Florida to get that production sound and between this record, "Tomb of the mutilated "by Cannibal Corpse, and "slowly we rot" from Obituary.. they pretty much set the tone for how death metal was to be recorded for the next 3 to 4 years. There was a glut of everyone's album sort of sounding the Same by the end of that, but initially it was all very exciting. Lastly.. I sent you a message via posting to another video deeper in your catalog here of my opinion on the next crucial full album review it is long overdue for you to take on your metal journey. I'm sure you will find it and I promise you won't disappointed when you hear the mighty king diamonds magnum opus Horror concept masterpiece.. 'Abigail."

If you wanna check out another Brazilian thrash band similar to Sepultura, look up Sarcofago. They briefly had a rivalry with Sepultura, probably because their lead singer was Sepultura's original lead singer. But their sound, as well as their early imagery, was very influential to death metal and the 2nd wave of black metal. Bands like Slayer, Sepultura, Possessed, Kreator, and Sodom all had influences on death metal and black metal, but Sarcofago's influence is more obvious.

I like to split their discography by duo albums, because share a lot of elements and always change drastically on the next duo: Morbids Visions/Schizophrenia(Black/Death Metal), Beneath the Remains/Arise(Thrash/Groove Metal), Chaos AD/Roots(Groove/Nu Metal), Against/Nation(more hardcore oriented), Roorback/Dante/A-Lex(Back to thrash, but keeping with some hardcore), Kairos/The Mediator(Experimentation), Machine Messiah/Quadra(added some prog-ish and symphonic). Actually, the last two albuns are pretty good: 'Machine Messiah' and 'Quadra'. I recommended it.

I think one of the things that made Roots sound so differently than the other albums was because that was the first Sepultura album that Paulo Jr. the bassist ever played on! He didn't play on any of the previous Sepultura albums. Max or Andreas did the pass parts for all the previous albums. They didn't have confidence in Paulo's ability to play well enough. Cheers Imakaiya. I was blown away by your review of Sepultura's music.

Arise is a METAL MASTERPIECE from start to finish. Kaiya I would love for you to review Cannibal Corpse one day, amazing death metal band. Grew up listening to all these bands you are reviewing and I love your passion for this music from the past, this was the pinnacle era of metal 🤘🏻

Great vid! Sepultura rules. A pity you didn't do anything from the Chaos AD album (my fav). Some absolute classics on there (Territory, Biotech is Godzilla, Refuse/Resist, Slave New World, Propaganda to name a few).

Hi beautiful ❤ Seen Sepultura live twice. 1st time was in California with Helmet & Ministry. Second time was in my homeland of Puerto Rico. They were amazing both times. They truly do not disappoint. Hope all is well in your world. ❤ - Eli

I saw Supeltura on the bloody roots tour then again a few years later when soulfly came out. Max C. Is a beast, how he could play both sets night after night is beyond me. I was a 80s kid so I got to witness Metal being born from Led to Sabath.... Metal is in my blood, it's my church, my savior, my therapist, my frail grip on sanity. Megadeth, slayer, Anthrax, Slipknot and korn are some of the best concerts I've been to. Love your reactions and wish blessings on you and everyone watching your channel. 🤟

I have had the privilege of seeing Sepultura live many times, and yes, they kick ass! In fact, one of my favorite concerts is when played the Arise album in its entirety in a small Rock/Metal bar in São Paulo, Brazil. No matter, what some whiners might tell you about post-Cavalera Sepultura, the "new" line-up is a sight to behold.

@Andy Speaking of whiners. Derrick Green is not awful, far from it. He brings a great energy to his live performances and does a great job with both the new and old material. Which is much more than can be said for Max who is about 20 years past his prime and is just sad to see live, the way he barely plays his guitar.

Roots was a revolution in metal music, and it is great album, everything with Max Cavalera was great, and then after Roots, he left the band and he made a new band-Soulfly, first album was in the style of Roots, but everything from Soulfly is great 💪🤘

51:00 that guitar riff was inspired by a popular instrument used in capoeira here in Brazil, called "berimbau". That's the sound it makes. You can listen to it in the beginning of a song called "Attitude" from the same album.

You should check out Chaos AD, it sort of captures the transition between the thrash/death of BTR and Arise and into to the heavier, tribal noise vibe of Roots (imo). I saw the classic line up live in Auckland NZ in 1994 as a teenager. It remains the best live music experience of my life, almost unbelievable levels of awesome.
