This game gives us an interesting perspective that I have never really seen explored in a horror game. We play from the perspective of the monster rather than the human. We get insight into his, her, or "its" motivations, its rationale, its thoughts, and its feelings. Very often, in horror media, the monster is just an unapologetically cruel thing that you are not meant to sympathise with. No redeemable qualities, just pure evil and bloodthirst. However, reality doesn't often work this way. In nature, an animal doesn't usually kill because it's bad. In this game, it is clear that the protagonist doesn't really think itself as the bad guy. Yes, it has killed people, but it does note that it was attacked first in prior experiences with people, so it doesn't exactly have any reason to think very highly of humankind. It's also clear that the protagonist values its peace, so when humans move into its territory, it sees them as intruders that are disturbing this peace. The noise from the house above keeps it awake, making it difficult to sleep. Later the protagonist does develop a conscious, and does attempt to make peace with the intruders above. It gives them a gift, but not understanding humans, the gift it gives them are human remains (worse yet, the remains of the woman's father), and with the humans not understanding the creature, they take it as a sign of hostility, and attempt to kill it. The game also still works well as a horror game. You may not be constantly chased by a monster, as you are the monster, but you are still on edge wondering what will happen next. The creepy artstyle also adds to the fear factor, such as the appearance of the other entities that the monster interacts with. I also like mystery of it all. Like what is the protagonist supposed to be exactly? One of the ending screens seems to hint at its physical appearance. We see the silhouette of a vaguely humanoid creature with elongated lanky limbs and an oddly shaped head. Judging by the camera position in the 3D roaming sections, it probably crawls on all fours. And then there are the strange beings that interact with it when it tries to sleep. Are they other creatures? Are they supernatural entities? Or are they figments of the protagonist's imagination? The game never really makes it clear, and they cease appearing after killing the woman for some reason.

Honestly I would love to see more games like that. Like we have games where we play as the monster but we don’t see it’s motivations or rationale we just are monster that kills people.
@overratedprogrammer Жыл бұрын
This is a great take on horror to me not even because of the perspective twist, but because it's successful in lingering horror. We have no idea what monstrosity we are, and none of the endings resolve it. When the game is over we don't walk away knowing everything is ok, we walk away worse with the newfound knowledge of this strange creature and world

The writing really is top notch! I love how it delivers the perspective of the creature. It sort of reminds me of HP Lovecrafts story "The Outsider" in that it comes from the perspective of the narrator. The visuals are really unique too!

A game such as this can only be effective if well written, and I was pleased to note it is indeed well written. Quite refreshing, as many indie horror games suffer from hastily-concocted plots and clumsy prose. Finally, as always, great playthrough and commentary, dear Librarian. Cheers! //Rick

Oh man I loved watching this. Seeing a horror game from the monster's perspective is fascinating, and even more fascinating when we learn that the monster is not inherently good or evil, but rather just trying to live its life. However, it can only live a normal life at the expense of the lives of other humans. Even when it tries to make a meaningful connection to the human woman by offering her a skull from its collection, the gesture inevitably backfires when the humans see it as a threat and decide to try and kill the creature. There's something oddly tragic about knowing the creature can never safely coexist with humans, despite its best efforts in trying. It, through no fault of its own, simply doesn't belong.

@@LetruneInedil Sad? I understand AI generated art has a lot of controversy around it, but this is one of the few cases where it's actually a very good use of it. Here it is being used as a tool for a bigger project rather than a means of generating cheap art with a push of a button and passing yourself as a legitimate artist when you are not.
