Bernadette is a true testament to this song she lost the love of her life!

I am a professional drummer. I played a show where Bernadette sang this and also "You'll Never Know." At rehearsal she had a real tear running down her cheek, which spoke volumes to me. It showed that she really meant it; not just for the show, but even at the rehearsal. She was so kind to every musician, stage hand, food servers, etc. I have worked with some Divas, and Miss Peters is NOT that at all. Quite the opposite. So vulnerable, kind, and engaging. Her goodness just shines through. I have the utmost respect for her as an artist and as a human being.

Joe Caroselli - Thank you, Joe, for your insight. Public figures are savaged by media wonks and now with social media, anyone can have an opinion about anyone else. It’s nice to read some positive, kind words about a performer whose singing I’ve enjoyed for the last 40 years. Thanks, again.

I’ve seen a few of Bernadette’s shows - I adore her. Just last night I was out with an old friend and his buddy, whom is met before, we were talking shop and this guy mentioned Bernadette Peters. He told a story of a very similar tone and - from (full orchestra)rehearsal to curtain Bernadette was fantastic to everyone. I’m here tonight not just for that but because it’s the three year anniversary of my partner’s untimely death and, well... it’s nice to know she means what she sings and sings what she knows. Much love and much more than you’ll ever know, From Boston

What separates Bernadette Peters from most others is that she doesn't just "sing" a song, she performs it. She's the ultimate Ideal of what Stephen Sondheim has always wanted in his casts, an actor who can sing -- and can she ever sing! She finds the true core meaning of each song she does and conveys that to her audience. She makes us hang on every word, every note. We're transported to wherever the song leads her, and we're compelled to follow her along. I've seen her in Broadway plays, but have never had the joy of seeing her in concert. I'm so envious of those of you who have seen her in concert. I think she's perfect.

The only criticism I have concerning the magic woven by the special artistry of dear Ms. Peters when she graces us with her singing is that the songs don't go on forever and ever and ever.

I saw her at UCONN right after she lost her husband. She sang Time Heals Everything. I don’t know how she got through it, but she did. It was stunning. The silence in the auditorium during her singing was palpable. She is my favorite and by inspiration.

I can never think of Bernadette Peters without remembering her tears during many of the touching ballads she is known for. She sings her lyrics from deep within. Great singers and great musicians, like great actors, know the words and their meaning, and are able to convey the author's feelings as if they were their own, which they often are. This is how the greatest musicians can make us feel the lyrics as if they were actually being spoken ...or sung by their instruments.

I just melt into my socks when I hear this... three more are from her self-titled album with the angelic portrait by Antonio Vargas: "If You Were The Only Boy (In The World), "Other Lady" and "Only Wounded" She, as well as her voice, is an enigma. As tender and sweet as a waif of a girl, and as arrestingly beautiful, supremely confident as a woman, she can hopelessly captivate me, bringing me to tears that fall like the rain, then mischievously make me smile, like the sun following the rain.

She is a special and spectacular performer, as unique and rare as a red diamond! She, of all the singers who sing Sondheim songs, has the passion and perception that only Sondheim might have felt while he was writing the songs. When she sings, when Sondheim is in the audience, it is like she is singing directly to him. She is the feminine side of Sondheim. She shows the emotion he only shows in his songs, which he hides from the media and in his rare interviews. Distress, loss, regret Sondheim songs are sad, mock lasting love, conventional lives. Yet the unfulfilled longing is always there, and Bernadette Peters, when she sings Sondheim songs, sings like she knows this

l bought this video years back and although l love most versions, this along with Dale Belmonts (RIP) is my favourite version. My best friend Mike has been on Chemo for a year or so but has been told that there is no more that they can do for him. While he told me the sad news over the phone I cried but silently. I am all he has and l will see this with him through till the end. I go to karaoke most weeks and being a very good singer myself will make this version his theme tune and keep him in my heart. God bless you Bernadette for this wonderful version. It means l will alwys be seeing him in most of his familiar places we went too.

Great phrasing. Can't think of anyone singer who can top this rendition. Composers - Music: Sammy Fain; words Irving Kahal. Written in 1938. Revived 1943 to become one of the most successful ballads of WW2, At the piano: Marvin Laird who was also musical director for Broadway's Gypsy and Annie Get Your Gun revivals in the 1990's. I researched his bio, hardly anything written about him. A fantastic musician and accompanist Bernadette Peters - born Bernadette Lazzara, Ozone Park, Queens, NY 1948 FEB. Wikipedia notes her father is Maltese

When Liberace had a TV show a Looong time ago, this was his closing song. I have it on my smartphone and, believe it or not, it is just lovely. I know...Liberace...but it really is lovely.
@gisawslonim97165 жыл бұрын
Liberace was a showman but he did know music ... he just made it all seem as if he was play acting. To do that and get away with it (and he did!) you had to know your stuff. It's easy to take it as a joke the way he did it but to make it work you had to really know the basics. He was no fool which is why he succeeded.
@zeldasmith61543 жыл бұрын
Agree. He was a showman. People came to see him just to see his costumes and furs and diamond rings. And he was a pianist not just a diva sitting on a bench.

This song was written was composed by Sammy Fain & lyrics by Irving Kahal, in 1938, just before WW2. It’s a sad song for loved ones leaving to go to war. This song is also for loved one leaving but we don’t know when we will see him/her. Over the years many singer have sung this song (including Jimmy Durante, Brenda Lee etc). It’s also a song some people listen to, to remember loved ones who have passed away.

She grew up in my neighborhood in queens just a few block from where I lived. Her name was Lazzaro. Her father owned a bread route and I would see his trucks dashing thru the neighborhood all the time. My friend Russell delivered the LI press to her house. She was a few years younger than me, I don't think she ever married. What a voice. What a beauty. She has discovered the fountain of youth.f
