I have watched all of these episodes more than once and never tire of them. This show was a phenomenon and deserves further revival and release on DVD. It dealt realistically with the problems of the changes not always easily taking place in the South in the early to middle 1960s. It had the strength of very good acting, very good writing and a team of people solidly committed to the project. I am grateful to Abe for posting these episodes. In this one, the grocer Mr. Mead is the character you love to hate -- exemplifying the white man’s paternalistic but aversive attitude toward the black man.

When I was in 2nd & 3rd grade there was a kind woman who would stay with me on weekends occasionally when my mother & stepfather would go out of town on sailboat races. There was a small corner store & we needed something or other. When we walked over there, she said she’d wait for me, that she couldn’t go inside. When we got back to the house she explained to me why. I couldn’t then & I can’t understand any of it now.
