Early in my teaching career, I taught a seminar in Hemingway. He’s a problematic writer for me. But if I were to recommend any of his novels, I’d recommend A Farewell to Arms and The Sun Also Rises. They are my favorites of his works. For Whom the Bell Tolls is a great novel, but I didn’t love reading it. A Farewell to Arms, I think, is my favorite of all of his books. I first read The Sun Also Rises in high school, and it did make me feel like I was becoming a very serious reader. But I think the story of A Farewell to Arms is the one I truly love. 🥰

@ I think you will appreciate the story in A Farewell to Arms. I’ve been having some fun with this series on books I loved to teach. I may do some of the Greek plays next. I’m in a BookTube group now where we are reading the works of Argentinian writer Claudia Pineiro in translation. The novel we are reading now, Time of the Flies, has these running references to Euripides’ MEDEA all throughout the novel, and I thought maybe I’d do an episode of my series on books I loved to teach on Medea and maybe Antigone and Oedipus as well. I can’t say that I loved to teach Hemingway, but I am glad that I’ve read most of his works. I just find Hemingway himself so problematic. I am sensing that you know what I mean as you’ve read a biography of him.

The biography I read was actually on Hemingway's third wife Martha Gellhorn and the writer of the book wasn't so generous with Hemingway... hence my reluctancy in approaching his works 😅

Nemmeno io ho letto Hemingway. Comincerei però da "Per chi suona la campana". "Shantaram" è stupendo. Mi ispira moltissimo "Le mille e una notte" raccontato da Abdolah. Grazie della compagnia 💜

"Il maestro e Margherita" mi aspetta da decenni, ma ho un'edizione Garzanti con font minuscolo che scoraggia la lettura; so che Paolo Nori lo sta traducendo e mi sa che aspetterò la sua traduzione immagino per Feltrinelli. "Shantaram" è molto scorrevole nonostante la mole e credo che ti possa piacere. Leggerò Kader Abdolah a breve in vista della sua presenza a Dedica a Pordenone. Happy readings!❤
