Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
In this week’s episode we cover:
1. Hi Andrea! I am knitting the Weekender Light with a locally sourced and hand dyed yarn. Its 2 ply and fingering weight and it has a mixture of pinks and yellows in the dye. I have noticed that the inside of the jumper (the knit side) seems to show the brightest colours, whereas the outside (purl side) looks more subdued in terms of colour. Now I am doing the sleeves, which have the knit stitches facing out, I am noticing that they don't quite match the body, colour-wise. Is this a thing?! Do the knit stitches somehow show more colour than the purl? I have loved knitting this pattern and will wear this jumper for sure, but if I make another, perhaps I should choose a more uniformly dyed yarn? Thanks so much for reading. I look forward to your videos every Friday. And huge thank you to Meaghan too who has helped me so kindly and patiently with my projects xx
2. Hey Andrea!! I love your podcast and have really enjoyed getting to know you better through it! I have a question about decreasing for sleeves. It's so confusing to me when the pattern says something like decrease every 5 rounds. Does that mean I'm decreasing on the 5th round and there are only 4 rounds between each decrease? Or am I knitting 5 rounds and then decreasing on the 6th round, therefore having 5 rounds between each decrease round? Thank you so much!!
3. Why do designers sometimes specify holding 2 yarns together (ex: DK + Lace = Aran) rather than the weight of yarn these two make when combined? Does holding 2 yarns make a difference in some way? Can I substitute the final weight (ex: Aran) and get the same effect? PS hello from East Lansing!
4. I finished knitting a bottom up sweater a few months ago. Sizing turned out well after blocking but I have worn it a few times before the heat in Arizona kicked in and it got too hot to wear. After warning it I realized I would like to have it longer in the body. It was knit bottom up, starting with a few rows of 2x2 rib into garter stitch. What would you suggest for fixing it. Thanks, for any help you can provide, love your videos, look forward to them every week.
5. Hi Andrea! I’m a lifelong crocheter and finally have gotten into knitting within the past year. Your channel is so chock full of wonderful fiber knowledge I have even recommended it to my hooking friends. ;-) I am working on a Weekender Light for your KAL and wondered if you can share why you do wraps and turns instead of German short rows. Is there any advantage to one or the other? I’m not at all opposed to learning how to W&T but already know and love GSRs; if I wanted to convert to GSRs, do you have any advice? Thanks so much for sharing all of your incredible knowledge!
IE: Pattern says:
Row 1: k10, W&T.
Row 2: P10, W&T.
For German Short Rows you would k10, and then turn at the point of the W&T, slip the stitch and tug the yarn over the needle. Then on Row 2, you need to work 1 less stitch than is stated, since you used the first stitch for your GSR - so P9, turn your work, slip the stitch and tug the yarn over.
If the pattern then has you work within those 2 turns (ie, knit to st before W&T) you would instead knit (or purl on WS rows) all the way to your double stitch created by the GSR, then turn slip stitch, pull the yarn over the needle, and continue on.
If the pattern has you work past your previous W&T each time (ie, knit to the previous wrapped stitch, resolve, K5, W&T…)
You would instead knit (or purl on WS rows), to the double stitch, knit the double stitch (knitting the 2 strands together, as though it is a k2tog), k5, turn, slip stitch, pull yarn over the top of the needle…

German Short Rows 100% - they are much easier for me to do (without getting lost in my knitting) and they turn out much neater for me .

About decreasing. This is how I have worked it out: if you start thinking “decrease every row”, that’s straight forward; you do just that. Then “decrease every second row”- knit one row, decrease on next row, knit one row, decrease on next row and so on. “Decrease every third row”: knit two rows, decrease on next row and so on. So then, logically, “decrease every 5th row” must be knit four rows and do you decreases on the 5th row.
@Sarah-hm3vi
@Sarah-hm3vi Жыл бұрын
Yes, Linnea, that makes perfect sense. I was also thinking of it this way: If it says decrease every 5 rounds, it means that in every block of 5 rounds that you knit, one of those must be a decrease round. Therefore there will be 4 rounds in between each decrease round. That might be less clear than your description!

Stocking(ette) stitch looks brighter and more colour saturated because the yarn is laying in the same direction, almost in lines. This makes the light reflect the colour well. On the back side, (reverse stocking stitch) the fibers are curving, diving and resurfacing in the fabric and not laying in a smooth line. The light does not reflect the colour well. Because of this reflection difference, our brains process it as a different colour. It is a very common phenomenon and one to keep in mind when designing items. You will also find that worsted yarn facilitates a more pronounced reflection and so, (a vibrancy of colour), over woolen yarn because of the fiber alignment. I hope this is helpful.

Unraveling upwards from the bottom of a ribbed, bottom up sweater is maddening, especially in the ribbing! I recommend picking up the stitches just above the ribbing, cut just below that, then unravel the ribbing stitches the natural way from the top.

I enjoy watching your weekly Q&A. You are so spontaneous and love that you don't feel the need to edit your content. I started my short row experience using wrap and turns but switched to German short rows after I saw how easy they are. I use them almost exclusively. FYI, KZbin interrupted this episode at least 7 times with advertisements. That's vey annoying. I'm not sure if you can do anything to avoid this, but Arne and Carlos mentioned in their Sept 9th announcement that they worked with YT to minimize the issue.

Thanks again for an uplifting episode! I definitely prefer German short rows - they’re easier to identify and work on the right side. And yes, workshops are really inspiring. Just this week I attended a three-hour workshop on dyeing yarn in a microwave oven, and it was really fun!

Purl Soho has a great, concise demo for German Short Rows on KZbin that includes substituting them for wrap and turns. I believe they always have you work one *more* (not less) than number of stitches called for in the wrap and turn method since the way it works the final worked stitch becomes the "wrapped" (lifted up double stitch) stitch so "wrapping" at the same place requires knitting or purling one more. This makes the instructions work exactly the same.

German short rows here, they seem logic to my mind, although I never tried the other methods. And about the decreasing: I found it usually means 'every 5th round'. In flat-knitted patterns I often for example come across 'bind of 3 stitches every 2 rows on each side' and as you can't bind off both sides on the right side, I concluded that 'every 2 rows' here means 'each 2nd row' or 'every other row'. But of course it might differ per designer. Thanks for your suggestions on how to figure out what is meant! Edit: I love to go to workshops, try to do a few every year if time and money allows to. I tried different crafts, from sewing clothes, machine quilting, painting silk and broderie d'art. Broderie is fantastic, but soooo time consuming that I don't tend to start a new project, but it's lovely to try all the things with a workshop and have some fun with fellow crafters.

I've added length to a bottom up sweater by cutting out one row above the ribbing, then knitting up from the ribbing to the added length I want, then joining it back to the body with kitchener stitch. It worked great and all the knitting is in the same direction. You just have to be careful to keep your kitchener stitch at the same gauge as your knitting and it blends right in.

I have seen the same idea, cutting above the ribbing, adding garter to the ribbed section, then grafting the new "bottom" to the sweater--It looks just like it was all knitting together!.

I was just going to suggest this. The only downside to this method would be that you can't try on for legth before kitchenering, I guess.

For short rows my go to is German short rows because they seem to work right side wrong side and close the gap beautifully provided I tug sufficiently when making the turn. I learned wrap and turn first but a few years ago my yarn store held a workshop exploring the various options for short rows how you would convert patterns and when you might choose the various options.

I learned the wrap & turn first, but it was always very confusing to me because what you do on the knit side is different than what you do on the purl side, and I would mess it up and do it backwards it would be hard to fix. But then one day I learned the German Short Rows - accidentally. And absolutely loved them and will never go back. They are consistent, they look seamless, and best of all - a LOT less memorization because it's basically the same things on both the knit and purl side. I'm never going back lol

GSR's all the live long day for me. I've just tried learning TSK's etc in a lace & cable pattern. I still reverted to substituting them with GSR's. I find GSR's so much easier to pick up and resolve. They just feel generally more intuitive, rhythmic even. That sounds like overstating it a bit, but I can visualise what I'm doing better. I love your explanation on how to decrease on sleeves. This is why I could never be a pattern designer. I'd just say.... erm... from armpit on, wing it throughout so you end up with the stitch count you need for the cuff. Bless you for both your patience and precision. I love the new pattern too. I used corrugated ribbing on my second DRK everyday sweater. It does end up a little less stretchy though. It's a great pattern.

German Short Rows for life! It's what I learned first, and my brain just can't seem to do a W&T as well. I feel like there's less room for error of holes with a GSR and that it's somehow more efficient. Sometimes I'm able to substitute no problem, and sometimes it gets a little tricky for some reason. I'd be delighted to see GSR's in future patterns from you if you're considering it!

Before retiring, taking 2 or three days of workshops at the Maine Quilt Show was my personal mini-vacation. I also recently took a 4-harness loom weaving workshop at PortFiber and wove a lovely table runner for my son's table. But, I think I'd need another workshop to warp my loom again - it is so complex!

Short rows: I have only ever tried GSR and W&T, but I like them both. I find converting between them confusing, so I just follow whatever the pattern designer chooses! I'm glad Andrea got to take the bag-making workshop! Very cool result. I live in a crafting desert, so I've never had much of a chance to take workshops in person. I have found that crafting can be very regional. I was blown away at how many boutique yarn stores existed along the East coast! I recently taught myself to tablet weave just to practice learning new things and I LOVE it! I've been dreaming about ways to use tablet weaving in bag-making, which is why I loved the woven bag so much!

I love German shirt Rows 99% of the time, Japanese if the pattern calls for as then there’s often a reason yarn quality or design feature. I think W&T as a very American short row, as I most only see it in patterns from the US. I always thought that it might be easier knitting English. When knitting continental I think German short rows are much easier and even gives a nicer result. But the great thing about knitting is you can substitute to your favorite style. Thanks for a great podcast

Love German shortrows! It's faster, I know wrap & turn, but feel it's more work, I just knit the stitch I was supposed to wrap..turn my work & go on knitting. I automatically switch it in my head now. Example: "knit 4 wrap & turn", I knit 5, turn the work, slip the stitch, pull it over & keep going.... If that makes sense. I always wonder about worsted & aran.... "Across the pond" they say they're the same thing, but knitters here define them as different. 🤷

Years ago I knit a vest that used W&T. I tried to follow the written directions but could not figure out how to do the technique or how to resolve them later. I ended up with holes in my stockinette no matter what I tried. I watched so many videos but nothing helped. I absolutely could not visualize what leg to pick up and how to place it on the needle tip. So if I saw a pattern included short rows it was not an option for me. A couple years ago I heard about German Short Rows and it changed my knitting. I’m now confident when a pattern includes short rows so that technique no longer eliminates a pattern from my consideration. That being said your description of where to place them and how to count when the designer assumes you will use W&T is wonderful and answers a question I have frequently when I switch out the method. Thanks again for a useful and fun video. I always look forward to watching you.

Yes to German short rows. When I first came across W&T it seemed so confusing, then I watched a GSR tutorial and seemed so much easier. One of the easiest tips I came across if you were replacing GSR for W&T was to simply just knit 1 extra stitch to what the instructions were saying for the W&T. I would love to know your thoughts on that Andrea, as it seems different from your helpful instructions you so kindly wrote out, unless I'm misunderstanding. Thank you so much. :)

I like German short rows, I feel they are very easy to work.

I prefer German short rows, but will use either one. I took a 12 week workshop course learning Temari while living in Japan. Te means hand, Mari means ball. It’s an ancient craft embroidering intricate patterns on to balls. I treasure that experience and hope to carry on the art with friends here in the US.

German short rows, but w&t are okay. I love workshops, and have done yarn dying workshops, but I'd love to do more, I need to take a couple in either Estes or Loveland, Colorado next year.

GSRs all the way! Carol Feller's short row book has a great explanation about how to substitute GSRs for W&Ts.

Yes also to German short rows. Unless the pattern specifies a reason to do w&t I default to German. I just think of the w&t stitch as the stitch that should be my German double. 😊

I did my first short rows in a shawl last spring. I substituted yarn overs for what was in the pattern-the short row method was too confusing for me. And I learned yarn overs using your tutorial 😊

I love German Short rows, I change all short row pattern instructions to them, Because I understand the instructions better, they are easier for me, I can see them better when reading my knitting, I never get holes which I do with W&T, its easy. May be to make it easier for pattern writing, put a link to a good video that shows how to do it. Thats how I learnt to do GSR, I tried them all and found these the easiest to remember and do.

I love your backpack. What a wonderful weekend workshop. I also learned W&T first, however, I prefer a DS. It keeps it simple, keep the two legs together. The W&T has many parts ie. which leg do you pick up first whether it is a knit or purl row, do you move a leg to the RHK then back to the LHK to untwist the legs, do you knit/purl through the front or back leg, can you easily find the wrap without a marker. There are so many things to remember in a W&T. I would like to see your patterns incorporate a DS if possible. Thanks.

I vote for German short rows! I have tried to convert patterns from W&T to GSR (charting helps to make sure you are keeping the right stitch count) but its not worth the effort to me. So I'll do W&T but its not my fav and sometimes it will determine if I buy the pattern or not. For workshops, I live in San Diego and there's not too many here but I signed up for my first ever a weaving class, I'm so excited to try something new. Bring on the weaving content!

I learned German short rows first and really prefer them. I think with good directions and a link to a video they’re fine for a beginner! Your backpack is lovely, the class sounds like it was amazing. I love learning and have taken many workshops over the years. Skillpop is a startup from Charlotte that offers so many different kinds of classes-I’ve taken many of those and they’ve expanded to other cities. Got a spot in your class at Black Mountain next year, excited to learn from you!

Honestly, I have always done the short rows that are included in the pattern, but recently have learned the why and how of different short rows. The trick is to understand your favorite short row and why you like it, AND how to substitute it for another type. Key UNDERSTAND! 😊😂

German short rows GDRs for sure. Started with w&t and always thought them painful. Then tried Japanese ones and definitely didn’t like them. GSRs just clicked and I always use them now xox
