Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions!
In this week’s episode we cover:
1. Hi Andrea! Thanks for spending time with us! Please prioritize your health and I hope that you heal fully. My question is about blocking. I have seen on two sweaters I love that blocking has made them stretch out and the sleeves are much wider than I ever want them to be. Before blocking, they were the perfect length and hugged me just the way I like. I wear my sweaters oversized so I will often knit up one size and the blocking just makes them even more oversized. I thought you were supposed to be able to manipulate the shape of your FOs through blocking but I kind of dislike/fear the process now. Am I misunderstanding what blocking should/can do? Thanks so much!
2. Kudos for making your health and family a priority. That said, I’m wondering whether there will be a March to May KAL in 2023? I had a lot of fun last year and have several of your sweater patterns that I’d love to make with the support of a group. Also, I’ve been looking forward to the Shiftigan release. Can you give us any hints about timing or the pattern itself, such as whether it will be steeked?
3. Hi Andrea, As the new year approaches, I'm planning my makers year and wanting to make sure I have time in my knitting calendar for all of the DRK events. I know you've mentioned them in the past, but I wondered if you could just summarize your recurring events that we might plan for in 2023? Thanks! PS - I hope your time off is healing. I'm keeping you in my prayers.
4. Hi Andrea! Sort of off-topic, but I'm curious if you have any recommendations for a lanolin-based hand lotion? My hands get destroyed by all of the cleaning and scrubbing I have to do every day. I've been on the hunt for a delicious lanolin lotion and am not sure where to start. I hope you have a very happy holiday season with your family and that you're able to rest and take care of yourself. Thank you!!

5. I'm so happy you're going to be continuing your podcast through your medical leave. It's one of my favorite parts of the week! That said, please take lots of care of yourself, and if the podcast ever gets in the way of your healing, always put yourself first! Onto my question, I was curious about how people make those cute fringed swatches. I know that it's from lazy swatching in the round by carrying the yarn in back. I'm not sure how people cut the carried yarn in back without their swatch falling apart! I'd love some cute little swatch rugs to decorate my apartment with, if I could figure out how they do it!
Bonus Question: I would love to hear about how your weaving is going! Weaving and spinning are 2 things I would love to learn but currently my brain is at capacity as far as hobbies go in my current stage of life so I will live vicariously through you in the mean time!

Hey Andrea, I actually have a front loading washing machine and put my knits in after soaking and squeezing out most water with a towel - 8-10 minutes on 800 turns on the "spin and drain"-mode is totally fine for all of my knits until now and blocks beautifully aftwards (and a lot quicker as well!) best wishes x

Happy New Year Andrea. There is a ton of wool processing ideas from the Fruity Knitting videos. You would need to search through them. I think the earlier ones have the most. I am not sure you fully answered the question on how to make those little (lazy) swatches with the fringe. So I’ll just add; in order to get the effect of knitting in the round, you actually knit straight rows. All rows are knit on straight needles. The yarn is looped across the back of the work at the start of each row. All the loops are cut when the swatch is finished and trimmed to the desired length. 🧶🧶🧶

Hi Andrea , goodness you still sound like life is going to be busy for you despite being on leave . I do hope you protect your time . Talking about processing a raw Fleece , I decided to support small crofters and heritage sheep .... full of enthusiasm and clearly not knowledge , I bought 3 fleeces from Orkney . They arrived in a thin plastic bag only !!! carried at full arms length by my poor Postman. . I think they powered the plane and floated to me on very smelly airwaves !!!! Hello Andrea, it’s been such a joy watching your series. I’m a spinner that knits and I love all things Fiber especially processing fiber from raw fleece. Here are some KZbinr’s that have tons of videos on that. Soulful Spinner BF Fiber Arts The Tipsy Spunner Fiber Love Diary Rayne Fiber Arts Also here are some Etsy shops that sell really nice raw fiber in small quantities. The first shop I bought some lovely BFL/ Romney cross is GinaLeisterFibers. I noticed there’s nothing in her shop now but keep an eye out. Other Etsy shops are PineMillFiberAndFarm and WoolSpinEwe. Thanks, Andrea, for addressing my blocking question! And thanks everyone in the comments for adding their suggestions 😊 I should have mentioned both were non-superwash wool and one yarn was actually a chainette construction, which - now that I think about it - would probably make sense to stretch so much unless I tighten my normal tension. All good things to consider!

I wrap the sweater in a series of several microfiber bath towels. And step on, etc. Microfiber absorbs more than terry cloth. Mine is stretched a little from my "lay flat" being folded in half to prevent it from hanging off the side of my draying rack. I refold every 12 hrs or so to make sure different parts are exposed to dry. My dry rack is better for laying out all my socks all at once. I used my dryer dry rack but set out on the counter. In summer, I'll use the air dry cycle with the rack. It blows unheated air and dries it, similar to putting a fan on it. I will probably get a pop-up sweater drying rack, and when it's warm, outside block it properly before putting it up for the summer. We get 70-degree weatger in april or may. If I catch one in april, it'll be less humid.

For knitting an in the round swatch flat, if you knit into the back loop for the first and last stitch the yarn will be locked in and not be messy. No need to knot the ends together. Just give a tug on the whole thing before cutting to tighten them up.

It looks like the Soulful spinner podcast is back. She has a number of past episodes preparing fleece. Lisa is lovely and does a detailed explanation of the steps she takes as well as recommending suppliers on line. Also, a "local to me" shepherdess, Marti, owner of "Walking Cloud Farm" in Western Mass. has Finn Sheep. Her fleeces are beautiful, clean, and she is very fussy with her selection. She has shades of gray and brown as well as her whites. I am sure she could talk to you about details. I used a fleece from her flock recently to comb, spin and knit into a shawl. It was delightful. Hi Andrea, happy holidays to you and your fam. My favourite podcast on processing and spinning is the natural spinner. I use hot water, blue dawn, and a garbage bucket with lid,a cheap plastic laundry hamper to strain, and pillow cases and a bucket,after the rinse in garbage bucket, pillow cases and bucket to lug inside to spin out in my top loader.find s local fleece, maybe through a local guild. I love that you want to process fiber it’s so rewarding to create yarn from the very first step. I’ve purchased under a pound of raw fleece or uncombed washed fleece which is a great place to start. WoolSpineEwe is an Etsy shop that I have used and liked the quality of their fiber. I have been watching School of Sweet Georgia, Kim McKenna has a new course on fiber processing. Happy holidays! Thanks for answering our questions every week! I use a mesh wash bag to soak my knits and then spin them in my washing machine. I gently fold my garment, place it in the bag, immerse and soak the whole thing, remove and squeeze out some of the water, plop the entire bag in my machine, run a spin cycle, and then lay out the garment on blocking boards or plastic bags. I rarely pin or block aggressively, I just pat and schjuzz (is that how you spell it?) into shape. I’ve also machine dried a knit sweater made with 80%-100% superwash yarn that had grown, and it definitively helped to make it less oversized.

Hi, if you have a front load washer with a spin only cycle, you can still use the spin cycle to get out the excess water from your knits before blocking. I've done this a couple of times and been very happy with the results. The knitted garment "hugs" the side of washer and doesn't agitate at all. Really cuts down on the drying time on the blocking mats.

I have a top loader and always spin my knits out on the woollens spun speed after hand washing them. I do place them in a careful manner astound the outside of the drum so no part get stretched out. I've never had a fail and it makes it so easy to pin or and dry if the garment needs it.

Hello beautiful Andrea! I’m so excited for your pattern to come out in January! I’ve been eagerly awaiting its release. I understand your dilemma with your work ethic over-promising what your body is capable of. Due to a health snafu (I’m a spoonie, too), I had to go with Plan B Christmas presents for my family, and postpone delivery of their handmade gifts until next month. I’m not feeling great about that, but we have to listen to our bodies, right? Here are some podcasts I like in regards to spinning and fleece processing: Knitting the Stash-fantastic information & very straightforward. JillianEve-Evie is an incredible spinner, and supremely talented, but I find her to be a bit silly, sometimes. I can only watch her videos in small doses. We all have different tastes. Rachel Smith-she’s an instructor with School of SweetGeorgia, too. She’s spun every breed imaginable, I think! She has tons of videos available. Fiber Love Diary-she describes her channel as “Not a Podcast.” It’s her video fiber journal, that has a lot of information! Those are just a few I watch, but all four have at least mentioned processing full fleece, if not filmed their own experiences. Be well, and happy holidays! I spin in my front loading washer. I use a small wash bag so it only just fits so nothing flops around. I found this works well .

I just did a sweater in Kelbourne Woolens Germantown and after soaking, threw it into my front loader on the spin setting. It’s an 11 minute high RPM cycle. I was nervous but it worked fantastic. It removed so much water and the sweater is dry. I did roll the sweater in a towel to get a bunch of water out first. It’s the same principle as the Panda spin dryer machines but it is larger than a Panda.

I also spin in my front loader. If an item is very large (I made a poncho) I’ll put it in a mesh bag first so it doesn’t stretch.

Too funny that you mentioned you want to watch videos on processing wool… Kristin and I have acquired two large trash bags full of wool from a local sheep farm and are in the process of building our own drum carder and washing, preparing, carding, spinning, and dyeing the wool to knit a sweater! We talked about recording our process and have already started our research 🤓
