​@@travellingselement7940That is mostly if the aurora is visble far south, wich put them on the horizon and there is too much light polution. Ive witnessed aurora borealis, not just once. YES you see the colors with your eyes very easy, even if the aurora was not strong at times. Sometimes it died off a bit and you could still see the green color. I witnessed the aurora explode right above my head and there was green and pink in STROOOONG colors, but even if it wasnt above my head the colors where very intense! My cameraS! couldnt even pick up the colors the way my eyes did. Shooting with phone, gopro and DSLR.

@@travellingselement7940No . That is based on the individual’s eye . They all looked green to me . Your eyes cannot see colors well in the dark . So you have to have a good source of light to keep your eye sensors to see colors . It is not based off the strength . Even if it is weak , it’ll be green . So it just depends on how well your eyes can see them.

If you travel to northern Norway for a week or two in Autumn/winter time (October- February) the chances that you'll see northern lights is high:) Personally, I saw northern lights yesterday evening. It was very weak though, because it was too much light pollution. So if you wanna see aurora stronger you should drive away from lights! Just some tips from a norwegian :)

N​ot just solar wind. That's hitting us 24/7. This was caused by a Coronal Mass Ejection. A powerful solar flare rips solar plasma from the Sun's surface along with fragments of its own magnetic field and flings them at a million mph at Earth. And when they slam into our magnetic field, it peels the outer layers back like an onion and drags them to the tail side of Earth where the field lines reconnect amd release an insane amount of energy which travels down the lines toward the poles. All that electric current hits the atmosphere and excites the electrons in the nitrogen and oxygen. As those electrons release that energy it comes out as photons at certain wavelengths. Hence the colored glow. The wavy patterns that shift and flow are literally the magnetic field lines ofbthe planet. Like iron filings around a magnet. The current itself continues down to the ground where surface charges build up measurable and can, amd have, caused power plant protection systems to trip leading to blackouts.

For anyone who is interested to know the reason behind this exquisite scenario- During a solar flare, a large number of electrons and protons are ejected from the sun. Some of them get trapped in the earth's magnetic field and move in helical paths along the field lines. Even if the field lines bend, the helically moving particle is trapped and guided to move around the field line. The field lines come closer to each other near the magnetic poles.
