I found a started micro tomato called Siam two years ago, loved it, saved the seeds, and then did nothing. This year, I started 19 plants, and they all seem to be true-to-parent! None is over a foot tall yet, all have compact growing habits, all have flowers already! It's my new favorite because it's so cute and tasty.

I discovered Dwarf tomatoes about 3 years ago, and I have loved growing them! Just a simple stake near the main stem and that's all you need, also they are so much sturdier because the main stem is much thicker than a normal tomato. So far I have loved Rosella Purple, Summertime Green, Uluru Ochre, and Chocolate Lightning. Every year I try a couple new varieties, but always keep a Rosella Purple in my garden.

Ditto on the Purple Reign tomato--I grew it two years ago and I've been hooked ever since. It's like a much more well behaved Paul Robeson :) I didn't know it was a dwarf tomato; I just assumed it was a regular determinate. I actually get a consistent harvest off of it all summer, which for me is July through Oct.

I had never thought about trying out dwarf varities since I do have the room for the big indeterminates but you're right- they're a total pain!! I grow in a much shorter season (Nova Scotia, Canada) so we need the whole dang summer to get our tomatoes. By the end of the summer they're at risk for being blown over by an early hurricane- just another point in favour of dwarf!

I live in 7b here in North Carolina too. I have some black cherry tomatos i grew from a cutting of my mother-in-laws plant and keep them alive in my bathroom all winter ( took cuttings again of the cuttings ) i only had them in a small plastic cup because it would fit in my window sill so they got stressed and had diseases so come spring I cut the tops again and now they are 2 feet tall already and i have a lot of flowers and 3 tomatos set on two plants. I recently heard about Everglades tomatoes and want to try them at some point as well. Thanks for the squash pumpkin variety suggestion that was so helpful.

Dwarf and micro tomatoes are the best! I just have a large balcony so I’m very limited and I can’t believe how amazing they do in pots. We eat a ton of cherry tomatoes and the dwarfs surprisingly produce a lot without the craziness of an indeterminate variety that needs to be trellised. I loooove Orange Hat from Baker Creek. Super compact and the tomatoes are yummy

I'm from Maui so we also have a long growing season and I think you expressed exactly my frustration with indeterminate tomatoes, I just want a simple staking method.... I feel ya, I've been growing dwarf tomatoes for two years. Funnily enough, my most successful tomato this year was Botanical Interests Roma. It maxed out at 3 feet and was covered in fat tomatoes. It also had very little pest problems, the stink bugs and hornworms really hit my dwarfs, but they didn"t touch the romas. I'm in SE Texas, so our tomato season is coming to a close until fall.

As a fellow NC gardener, it changed my life when it clicked for me a few years back that I can grow multiple successions of certain summer crops like cukes, squash and tomatoes. I still am trying out new indeterminate varieties, but there's no longer that pressure to plant so many of them (or my favorite determinates). I can try one or two, and if they're performing well, I can root cuttings or sow new seeds and grow a second round. Such a game changer.
@reneauyoungblood3733
@reneauyoungblood3733 19 күн бұрын
When do you start your 2nd succession? I am in northwest Louisiana and last year we had over 100 degree temps from late July to almost the end of September!! It was brutal. I am thinking of starting seeds indoors in August to put out in Sept. Now wondering if that will be too late?
@zepheniahdraws
@zepheniahdraws 19 күн бұрын
@reneauyoungblood3733 I try to time it so they're doing the vegetative growth during the super hot weather, so they're big enough to flower and fruit when it does start to cool off some. Mid-late July, I'll start rooting suckers or starting new seeds.

Indeterminate tomatoes are worth the work. Taste, Taste and Taste. Also, for canning, you can grow delicious, larger indeterminate tomatoes than Romas: Amish Paste, Pink Oxheart, San Marzano Redorta, Russian Orange 117 and Italian Heirloom and Polish Linguisa. All are larger and in my opinion, taste so much better. Oh, and because they are larger, they are less work but over all, with indeterminates, you gotta do the work. Blessings!

I love this ❤ The explanation at the beginning really helped me understand what are the characteristics I am looking for. I only have a balcony and I stumbled across a variety of dwarf cherry tomatoes called sweet n’ neat at a local nursery and it was perfect. Gave me cherry tomatoes, all summer long, but stayed very small. I think it’s a hybrid, though cause I was never able to find seeds. But I came across a type called glacier tomatoes this year that I am going to try it my moms backyard. It produces regular size tomatoes but apparently is also good for balconies. I’m going to look into the types you mentioned and all the resources I’m excited to see if I can come across different types of tomatoes

My tiny tomatoes just went in the ground but they’ll bulk up fast. The plan this year is determinate in raised beds, indeterminate in the ground, along the perimeter of a metal fence. I’m hoping I can manage them easier by tying them off on the fence. Espalier tomatoes if you will 😅 I’m hoping I can eventually remove the determinates from the raised beds and replace with a fall crop … we’ll see how this goes 🫠 I’m totally interested in trying the dwarfs…I’ve grown Orange Hat indoors over winter and they were great!

Meg - this is my first year growing dwarf tomatoes (Victory Seeds) - they are very full and bushy but not putting out the fruit. To be fair, I over planted (again) and the hail damage was significant and temps will be triple digits tomorrow here in TX. BUT, I do grow those indeterminates in the tall (30in) birdies and I need a ladder to harvest, maintain, etc. I have very limited space. I am having similar thoughts.....just grow the dwarf plants. The few dwarfs I have in the greenstalks are doing well and I would like to try the micros next year. The Glacier Bush I purchased from Botanical is a strange one---very few stalks/leaves. But it was the first plants to set fruit. I have 2 in the greenstalk and 2 in bags.

I don't care for how the indeterminates sprawl all over the place. I love Dr. Wyche though so will continue to grow at least one until I find a good replacement. This year I plan to trim it back hard and try to keep it in bounds. I did grow a determinate I liked called Red Snapper. It was very productive just like Dr. Wyche is for me. It too got very big and it kept producing until it just got too hot.

I grow them all for different reasons. I grow indeterminates because that's what most of the tasty heirloom varieties are but I don't get as much production from them even with the hybrid varieties since they quit producing or just die in the heat of summer. I grow determinates for large volumes for preserving. Determinates are much more productive since they finish producing before it gets too hot for successful pollination. When I need some in containers (like in the fall when it's still hot but we have an occasional freeze), I grow dwarf and microdwarf.

I’m team whatever! This year I have some of all of the above. I will be drowning in a sea of indeterminate vines later this season but I’m going to try topping off the vines when they get too tall and see if that helps any? Probably not but one can hope 😂 Determinates have been tricky in my experience. I had Marglobes last year that said determinate on the seed pack, and they were not determinate. Maybe semi-indeterminate? The vines got over 10 feet and they put out huge flushes of fruit all season. It was wonderful but it was a lot. My Ace 55s were similar. They never stopped growing but didn’t get as big as the Marglobe. The Ace 55s Kept giving me bumper crops of fruit. I’d think they were done and then they’d put on more flowers. It almost seemed that if you have happy plants they will just keep going, didn’t matter what the seed pack said… last year was my 2nd year gardening so I don’t have much experience. I would like to see how a “real” determinate behaves. I have a few new varieties this year so we will see. This year in my greenstalk I’m growing orange hat and micro Tom tomatoes. They are super cute and already producing tomatoes. I also have Patio F tomatoes and one other kind of dwarf. Can’t remember the name of the other one. Def excited to compare all these varieties throughout the season! I’m in Maryland so I my growing season is similar to yours.

I’m team Indeterminate. However, I also am trying several dwarf and micro dwarf varieties. So far, I have 16 dwarfs and 2-3 micro dwarfs planted out with another round of maybe 10 more to transplant. I really want to see how these perform. I still love my indeterminate, but these dwarfs look promising.

my 'Sweet Scarlet' is now 4 ft tall. Unfortunately with our heat (9b), and the fact that I transplanted late, my harvest is going to be quite small before it's done for the season. The 'Rosella' pink variety is in a similar boat. Can't wait to try them if they turn before the bugs get them. This is my first year growing dwarfs from the Dwarf Tomato Project. Lesson learned to get them planted much sooner next spring (planting other more heat tolerant varieties this fall). Please provide an update on yours since I'd love to know how they do for you.

I’ll definitely be updating! I can imagine gardening in 9b with the heat is frustrating! Tomatoes are so finicky in heat. I hope everything goes well for you!
