What’s interesting about the duel arena in RS is that it can literally feed real life addictions because of how easy it is to buy and sell gold. When I was about 16, I had my mom’s credit card number memorized and I had a very good range boxing account. There was a day I got cleaned for somewhere around 200 mil (this was 15 years ago). When I got cleaned, I bought like $150 worth of RS gold and got cleaned again, then about $100 more and got cleaned again. I got my ass whooped and my parents both had a legit sit down with me and explained what a gambling addiction was and told me I couldn’t play the game anymore because it was unhealthy for me. In hindsight, that conversation and the repercussions (grounding, barred from the game, and paying them back a few hundred bucks) had a lasting impact on me. Just thought I’d share because, crazy stuff!

Honestly, the real problem is the staking. I'd love to see a duel arena where staking is impossible. Being able to have organized 1v1 fights, with custom rules and restrictions. Edit: Hell, you can keep staking for small stakes, capped at 1m maybe. That way, players can still stake meaningful amounts of gp, but you'd have to stake 24/7, and lose every stake, in order to lose this amount of money. Losing 1b should happen over the course of months, not seconds.

I get the video, jagex says 'the players are in control', but they refuse to poll the duel arena option. Even if they did poll it, i dont think removing the duel arena would pass the poll. Majority of us are not addicts and i try the duel arena the same as a real life casino. I go there with a maximum amount 10m in the game and irl $100 at a real casino, if i lose i lose and i had a fun 2-3 hours. Players need to seek help if they feel they have a problem.

Ever notice that dice games give you a 45% chance of winning? The expected value is -0.1 gp per gp wagered. If you play infinitely many times, it is the statistical equivalent of a 10% tax on every bet. How many times would you be willing to exchange 1m for 900k? If never, then you probably shouldn’t be gambling. Even worse, every dice bot script is 100% confirmed to be rigged.

Then mega bot farms come in because the stakers are buying gold and keeping the price very worthwhile for someone to invest in making a massive bot farm. It all goes hand in hand. Remove the arena, demand for black market gold plummets (there will still be gambling of course but it will be MUCH more likely to have scams and many players will not seek to get involved in it because it won’t be sanctioned by the game like it is now) and the entire health of the game drastically improves. The gold sink is cool and all, but there are many other options for that. The arena needs to go.

I’m 24 and can confirm playing RuneScape for 15+ Years cultivated my gambling addiction to a now sickening low.. evolving from seemingly harmless pixels on a screen to real money im supposed to use for important things, I don’t feel like myself anymore. The worst part is the emotional roller coaster.. some days you’re riding high and others you’re in the pit.. kinda wish I never started playing RuneScape as it certainly exposed me to behavior I’d probably never have experienced as a child otherwise..

Duel arena isn't regulated in any way, which sucks. Nowadays even online casinos/poker tables have responsible gambling, with reality checks, cool down periods, as well as self exclusions in cases of addictive characters. They're ruining people's lives at their youngest ages, as at least you need to be 18+ to gamble lol. But apparently there's a skill to a 50/50 stake. Ridiculous

The guy at 16:08 really nailed what went wrong with another MMO I used to play: Puzzle Pirates. Fun game where you play puzzles to power and fix your ship and you all work as a team to sail your pirate ship, defeat other crews of players, and even go to war. They introduced poker as one of the piratey activities you could do and it diminished everything else in the game as a result. It wasn't worth going out with yer mateys for 20,000 pieces of eight for an hour long pillaging adventure when you could make that much in one hand of poker. The game still lives, just barely, and so does poker on the game, because of course you can pay real money for in-game coins. They hooked enough whales that it was worth it to the developers to let the whole spirit of the game die.

Manked was right on the head with what he said. When i first got into OSRS all i did was quest and slayer and i loved every second of it, once i hit 99 slayer (had around 340m bank) and i wanted to work on getting those buyables out the way so i tried the duel arena, walked way with 2b-3b that night with some friends and just stood at the bank, i never wanted to play the game and just went back to the arena, got cleaned and bought gold and started the cycle over again. I currently put rs down for about 7 months after the last incident. Getting money that quick isn't good, you don't learn anything that way and a lot of people think when you have that much the game becomes enjoyable because you can do every boss, its just not fun any more. Seeing those big drops (before the eco crash) like dragon hunter crossbows just feel like drops in the bucket or you have this urge to stake your split to make double.

Literally EVERYBODY would back this up besides the concurring stakers. I was addicted myself for awhile but I completely quit the game and don’t plan on coming back, no duel arena or not. The economy is dying, duel arena still flourishing and flowing millions of REAL dollars and only a main focus to iron men nothing for PvP. My advice quit the game and start grinding irl, even if you’re well off, better yourself more by ridding yourself of this toxicity. The game I once loved as a child and teenager, now nothing but a nuisance and deep regrets. Good luck people.

I have almost never used to duel arena and it doesn't need to be taken out. We don't need to shutdown all casinos in America because there are gambling addicts either. Its up to the individual and the people around them to guide and protect them from themselves. It's time people started taking some responsibility for their actions, and realize they have consequences. Imagine the games economy without the Duel Arena gold sink. Imagine the Grand Exchange without the Duel Arena. Filled with gambling bots and different gambling games and websites adverts. You think it’s bad now? There would be 10x more scamming, spamming, and shady shit going on. Sometimes the player base doesn’t know what’s good for it. The REAL problem are the bots. The Duel Arena is isolated. If you never teleported there, and ran all the way to it you would never knew it existed and it would never effect your game play. Bots on the other hand are at every turn. Every tree, fishing spot, and boss. Removing the Duel Arena just adds unsanctioned shady gambling to the Grand Exchange.

Gold sink how? Buy bonds with cash>sell bonds on ge for gold (that comes from another player)>stake gold at duel arena>gold either stays with you (win) or goes to another player (lose). Its just massive amounts of gold going from player to player. The gold comes from in-game and stays in-game. It does, however, motivate gold farmers (alot of which use bots) to do their thing which introduces more items into the game which is causing the prices of most high end items to plummet. All so they can turn around and sell that gold to the next addict that needs a re-up.

That mentality of “you’ll never be able to enjoy RuneScape again regularly” is fucking TRUE. Rs3 player here, but hear me out.. I’ll admit it. I started buying gold here and there to help me progress, since I had a limited time to play. That quickly snowballed, and I would constantly sell gear to progress skills, because I knew I could just spend like $25 USD to buy it all back in a snap. A full endgame melee setup is legitimately less than $100 USD, and that’s for the gear that should be infinitely difficult to properly obtain without already being a top tier player, whether that be gold farming through bossing or ironman-style pvm to get the individual items. Cut the time needed to achieve anything down from 2 weeks to 2 minutes. Literally the only thing separating this from being exactly like the duel arena is, with the duel arena, the flip-side of already losing your fun and passion for the game, is to lose everything and have to spend MORE real life money just to break even. A cesspool. A swamp. Drain it.
