Lovely photo and a beautiful environment. Loosing a trail is a good way for adventures and adventures of a fairylike way are a good remedy against stress. That was indeed a frog, a lovely fat fly loving frog, not a toad ( frogs are smoother than toads). Flies are indeed attrackted by the colours yellow, white and indigo blue. Most insects don't see the colour red, its a kind of black to them. Bright blue isn't attracting for mosquitos, it resembles the blue sky. It's a good colour for a bedroom. Those stinging horse-flies are indeed invited by the colour yellow but it is mostly the smell of sweat that attracts them, they're after your blood. It's the plague in moisty hot and warm environments. Moist it must be, if it is hot and sweaty it's dinertime. Travel light, use repellent to disattrackt that sweaty smell, don't use parfume. Zebra's use theire zebra patterns against horse-flies, but they don't live in an moisty environment. Praise good neighbours. It's good to see Amanda cheer up after that little bush bush adventure. Living in that other big adventure aint always easy. That smell of bat guano may also attrackt flies. Thank you for lovely photographs

That is a nice image Gavin. I was glad to see that your outing wasn't a total disaster, hope the truck survived the trip back. When my family left England, we moved to Quebec. As a kid I can remember a camping trip we took up into the north woods. The midges and mosquitoes were bad, but those black flies were horrible. When they bit, they took a chunk out of you and left a wound that bled. There are fewer biting flies here on the west coast, but I do miss those lightning bugs on the east coast.

Oh my goodness. Our hats are off to you for braving the bugs. We experienced an awful swarm like that in Upper Michigan in early May and we didn't stop to take any photos. And we had bug spray on, too. They were vicious! We're starting to enjoy nature more when it's frosty at night so that we don't have to deal with the little buggers as much. Nice waterfall shot, though!

Poor man’s ND could also be multiple exposures, stacked and averaged in Photoshop. It would blur the water pretty well but then you could take one or two exposures to repair any unwanted motion blur or flies.

We are listing our house near Hamilton Ontario in the next month or so and the good deals in Nova Scotia have had us looking at properties in Cape Breton. They don't show you those bugs though! This is a serious consideration. I'm hoping it's a spring thing like the biting black flies here that can eat you alive chunk by chunk. Enjoying your church reno channel immensely and this was as always. Stay safe and hope the flying monsters don't stop you from your beautiful work!

Thanks for showing the RAW files again, I actually really enjoy when that is done. Beautiful photo of the waterfall as well, especially under the circumstances of the pesky files. You mentioned the risky driving. My husband and I were near Bridgeport, California and decided to see the Ghost Town Bodie (which was very cool by the way). Being a lover of history I told him we had to go since we had the time. Little did we know it was a 13 mile dirt road and we were driving a 99 Camaro that has about a 5 inch ground clearance... Glad my husband loves me and everything was good with the car after that trip.

You got an outstanding shot. I do believe it was worth all the trouble you went through to get it. I suppose there is a hatch of certain insects this time of year? Maybe it will get better the further along into summer? Mid summer we went to Chincoteague and walked the Virginia side of Assateague. The mosquitoes were awful. I got eaten alive. No wonder the visitor center sold Deet. I didn't do a good job spraying some parts of my arms because that's where I was attacked. Ugh!!! This video reminded me of that adventure. That waterfall you were at is gorgeous. Yes, that green creature looks like a frog to me.
@JohnDrummondPhoto2 жыл бұрын
@4:00 - Green Frog. That's not just a description; it's the species name. That waterfall location will be great in early October or so. The colors will be like nothing you'd see on Vancouver Island.

A great bug repellent is BENGAY, the insects don't like it. Just put a few dabs on here and there and you should be good to go, unless they're just so hungry that they really don't care what you use, then you're just screwed. Hope this helps. And, I really enjoy your videos, thank you for the entertainment.

Great work under horrendous conditions ! Flies like that is the worst form of torture imaginable burn me stick needles in me but keep the flies away ! As beautiful as the scene is Amanda doing her frog princess impersonation would add some contrast ! I wonder would a small portable usb fan (mounted on your head like a headtorch )replace the wave of hatred especially when the are that intense but again its just another piece of kit to lug about 🤔🤔🤔🤔 I must experiment next time im out on the bog (not in the bog)🤣🤣 looking forward to episode 2 for HC towers .

I pay the bills with Architectural photography (dont tell mom, she thinks I play piano in a brothel...), and one evening right at dusk, all these purple marins decided to descend on the house we were photographing because the neighbor had a backyard full of the pod nests for them. Of course theyd made nests in the backside of the porch extension, roof overhangs etc ton this house too. I have a photo of my assistant with a long board we found in some construction dumpster down the street swinging it wildly like a madman at the birds to shoo them off so I made sure to polish it up like the finished image and I actually prefer it with him in the scene!
