I really like these Continental DWS06 tires. Does anyone have any other experience with non-manufacturer recommended tires on the BMW i8?

Hi Pat, I'm interested in upgrade tires on my i8 just like what you did to yours. I find that u upgraded the front tires to 245 with stock rims, is that possible? Cuz from what I see from the rims on my i8, they are so narrow

I have been looking for wider tires for my I8 for a long time, but due to the 7.5 rim size in the front, there are very limited selections for tires. I did my research about rim size and tire fitment, it says 7.5 rim can only equip 235 maximum width , so I'm scared to put 245 in from ~

@@kevinweng7402 Tire manufacturers will only recommend a maximum of 235 on the fronts. This is because there is a slight risk with running wider. It's possible that a side wall can collapse on the track under severe cornering if you go outside the recommendations, but no one that owns an i8 with 245's on it has had a problem. Just bought my second set, size 225/45/18. I had gotten over 50K miles on the last set and i drive in all conditions. It drove like a new car when i originally upgraded from the Michelins that come from factory. Highly recommend for sure

I can confirm that 245/40r20 front 275/35r20 rear is awesome vs stock tires. I am at about 45k miles on my 2016 I8. This will be the second set of tires I am putting on the i8 myself. last set I had was KUMHO ECSTA PS91 245/40f 275/35r the improved grip was impressive to say the least. Tire life was Meh, I only got almost 20k miles from these. I decided this time to go 245/40 on both front and rear. 275R was IMO overkill for the 240-ish horse that is put to the rear wheels. I also find that Now it rotates slightly better on corner exit. I also seem to have less issues with the rear end wiggle in heavy rain as the wider 275 tires have a higher chance to hydroplane. As i seem to see a lot of rain in these south GA north FL summers.

Hey Pat, what you are describing is actually “Understeer=turn front wheels but car does not want to turn or pushes” Stock i8’s are known for this due to the undersized, skinny front tires.

That's correct. I later i8's I believe that they changed something in the steering to prevent this issue. An aftermarket supplier also offers different control arms with different camber. But, ultimately, the cheapest and easiest way to fix this problem is to plus-size the tires, as I did.

Great review! I have both tires but on different cars. DWS 06 on Mazda6 and S001 RFT on BMW 3 series. Nothing bad to say on both tires and cannot compare it as they are mounted on different cars. DWS 06 is smoother and quieter compared to Pirelli P7 it replaces. Awesome on wet and dry. I have no experience driving DWS 06 on snow as I have dedicated winter tires (Nokian Hakka R). When its time to replace my S001, I will get these DWS 06!

If you don't like the quick feeling of those summer tires, you may want to go with the All Season 4 from Michelin. Or see if you can test out the DWS06 Plus because they definitely move a lot.

Excellent analogy Pat. I like the depth gauge finder you're using. The consideration of "doing the deal," was in the cost comparison between the two manufactures, aside from the other benefits you pointed. I'm not sure why in just 24 hours or less you get a flat spot in the just the rear tires. Sure, the rear might be a little heavier, but that you not be part of the flat spot equation. I would still recommend that you not only park the rear atop of something like horse stall mats, or even carpet samples that you can pick up at any carpet store. Also, I'd park all four tires on some sort of matting. But the reality of it is, you shouldn't even have to worry about flat spots since the I8 is your daily driver. As to noise of the better of the two tires, yeah, that always bothered me too, but I found the solution. Cut-outs! Heck, I doubt I'd hear tire noise even if they were wearing chains.🤣 Save the Wave.👋

Hi Peter and thanks for stopping by! I have a feeling that the flat spots are due to me plus-sizing the tires. I'm running 275mm wide tires on 8.5" (215mm) wide rims. They fit and they do well, but this creates more pressure on the tread-part of the tire than it was likely designed for. So, I had a feeling that this was my primary issue. I run the same tires on my 2015 Dodge Dart but did not plus-size the tires and also don't have a flat-spotting issue. I may try your suggestion to eliminate the flat spots. I'm not a fan of placing random things on my garage floor, simply because they move around over time, water dripping off the car causes a mess on them and it's more of a hassle to reconfigure and clean things than it is to live with the flat spotting. That said, if I had my way, I'd berber carpet the entire garage which would make kneeling much better. ;) And, I'm not sure about those cut-outs on the i8. It would sound more like a lawn mower, LOL. Wow, I just listened to exhaust upload. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I don't really think I like any of the after-market set-ups and definitely not the straight exhaust. I will now cease and desist from making any further comments on your exhaust. "Stock" is obviously the way to stay. Funny you bring up going with berber carpet. I have a friend who does very high end mods and restorations of DeTomaso's out of his home. His four-car garage is entirely wall-to-wall with remnants. Usually two layers and seemed bay-by-bay thereby allowing him to remove/replace the carpet one bay at a time. Of course these cars are not pulled in and out of his garage daily in all types of weather, so he doesn't have your concerns. His garage is heated and air-conditioned and de-humidified and has the most sophisticated electronic filtration I've ever seen short of a hospital's ER system. In reality, it's probably even better. He also never gets sore knees and I've never seen him wearing slippers while working, let alone shoes. And you thought I was NUTS! He is a germ-a-phobe and is agoraphobic, which brings new meaning to the phrase "a thin line between a genius and a nut." But his builds are of SEMA quality and he has a wait time of a year for anyone that wants to avail themselves of his services.

@@petercarey6883 I totally agree on the exhaust of the i8 and that's why I don't have an urgency to touch it. There are some who have gone with a cat-less downpipe and tune but I don't know what these cars sound like. Changing the muffler out seems to have a negative effect, for sure. I can totally understand someone having a garage like that for a collection. But definitely not a daily driver, for sure. I wonder if this person has any online media of their garage. I'd love to see a little more of it if possible. If I ever win the lottery and build a garage space, that's what I'd love mine to be like. 😉

Thank you! I found my work shirt online thru RedKap. They make the shirts for mechanics. An Etsy store made embroidered KZbin patches. Once I sharpened up my hand sewing technique, the patch went on well. The BMW patch was an iron on so no sewing required. But, you'd probably look more appropriate with something more Corvette related, I think. ;)

Nice informative video. I also hear a lot that the age of the tire may become more important for those that don't put many miles on their car. They'll hit the "age" limit before the tread life becomes an issue.

Thank you! Yes, that's very true. In fact, my father bought a 1989 Corvette in the mid-2000's with stock tires on it. They were wearing out and he didn't want to change them because they still had tread on them. One day, he gave it a little gas going in to a turn and it spun around on him. He put the left rear fender into a tree on the right side of the road. Had it repaired and took a loss to his pride. After that he put new tires on it. Now, he was a mechanic since the 50's, but for some reason it never hit him. It's important to be on a safe set of tires, regardless of tread depth.

Regarding oversteer. These tires lean toward oversteer. I have E350 RWD and they definitely oversteer but it's very controllable. I think it's the sidewall being so soft. I have the DWS06 Plus. I thought my suspension was broke, nope these things corner on rails to the point where it's videogame like.

Hello Pat, You were correct. Upsizing the tires from 215/45/20 front to 245/45/20 and 245/40/20 rear to 275/40/20 rear will not work. My plan was to 'lift' the car by 12mm with this. I took the front tire off and added a foam layer to simulate the 12mm gain. It does hit the upper arm :( I will go with your recommendation above. Just one thing, all the 245/40/20 tires for the front I found ( Including the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 245/40R20) are for a rim width of 8-9.5". Our I8 has a 7.5" rim width? Did your tire shop have any problem installing them on the 7.5 rims? Thanks Stephan

The sidewall will be under more pressure with a wheel that is smaller than recommended. The risk can include sidewall collapse in extreme situations (extreme cornering on a track, for example). They can't recommend that tire for our wheel due to liability. However, hundreds of i8 owners have plus sized without any issue at all. So, it's a "try at your own risk" situation. My installer didn't comment. They just put those tires on the wheels. The only issue I have is rear tire flat spotting after 24 hours of being parked. It's likely a Continental DWS06 specific thing as no one else has ever mentioned this happening on other tires. Some owners recommend the Michelin Super Sport as well. They are less aggressive, lighter and perform well. I think this would be my other recommendation but I personally have never tried them.

I never suggest spacers as it messes with the geometry of the suspension. However, some folks have done this to being the fronts further away from the front forks. I think they used 5mm

Pat.. thanks for doing this work. Based on your work I spec'd the same size for '16 I8. I went with Sumitomo summer tires since my I8 is just occasional use and I have had great results with Sumitomo performance tires on other cars. I was wondering what tire pressures you are running.. the rear tire is a lttle over with for the stock rim so I am wondering if you change the pressure recommendation to keep the rears from weating unevenly. What is your experience with tire wear on the rears? Any issues. Thx!!!

I usually run 35 PSI on all 4 tires. If I let it get to 32 PSI then I start running the rubber down closer to the sidewalls. This may only be because of the tires I'm using. So, no matter what you choose, keep a tire depth gauge in hand and measure the sides and middle of the tread and adjust accordingly.

Hi Pat, thanks for all your great videos. Will be getting new tires soon. Are you still happy with your decision to go with your 245/40/20 and 275/35/20? I seriously consider going with 245/45/20 and 275/40/20. I know... fuel efficiency will be lower, I will lose a little performance and the speedometer will be a little off. The car will go 'up' about 12mm. But this is exactly what I think I will like. I would like to get a bit more 'ground clearance'. I am looking at NANKANG TIRE NS-25 A/S UHP 245 /45 R20 103W XL BSW from discount tires. All 4 tires would cost about $650 installed. Would love to get your thoughts on this. Thanks Stephan

I'm happy with my tire size choice and would do it again. However, going with the larger profile is a personal preference. I'm not sure about fitment. The front inside shock fork is extremely close to the tires that I have and I've seen signs of minor rubbing which must have come about when I hit bumps. However, there is only a smudge on the fork and no signs of rubbing on the tires. I don't think this is any concern with this size tire but the high profile is going to put the tire closer to the fork and I think it will rub more.

A friend of mine also said he had a flat spot on his DWS06 tires on a Ford sedan he was driving, if it sat for a little while. I believe it has more to do with the tires than the car. I had no rubbing issues.

I just bought the 245/40R20 s001 tires at the dealer and with install it was $528 each. I'm scared to use other kind of tires. That bumpiness for a mile doesn't sound pleasant, what would happen if I put any other kind of tires.

Many people have installed other tires, such as the Michelin 4S and have no flat spots felt during the first couple miles. It seems that the Continental DWS06 rear tires are more susceptible to this after plus sizing. The Michelin's last longer than the OEM tires as well, but I don't have any personal experience with them, so I can't provide more details. Hi Pat, love your videos :) got my I8 just 3 month ago. its a late (November) 2014 model. I knew before I bought it about some humming noise when going over 45 miles/hour . Thought first the (almost new tires need to be balanced). Did that and the humming is still there. Have original tires on it (at least I thing they are the originals, Bridgestone Potenza). Could it be the tires? Second question, thinking about getting the DWS06 next time. Are they directional tires? Or can they be rotated (if non directional)? Thanks a million ...Stephan

Thanks! The original tires should not him unless you got a bad set of tires or you have a wheel bearing (hub) that is failing. The DWS06 are not directional.

Second are they the exact same width as the wheels that come on the vehicle stock? I found the OEM Turbine wheels used on eBay and they were the same width as my OEM W style wheels. That way I can switch back and forth between the Turbine style with the Continental DWS06 I purchased from a local tire shop, and the W style wheels with the BMW Bridgestone Potenza's. The Continental DWS06 that I bought fit on the OEM wheels but Continental doesn't recommend that size tire for this wheel. Since the tire is a little wider than the wheel, there is a potential for sidewall collapse in extreme cornering (think track) situations. However, I'd never track a car on all season tires, so I've been happy with them. As always, plus sizing tires is an at-your-own-risk decision, but after seeing many people plus size to 245/275 on the i8 on the bimmerpost forum, I gave it a try and couldn't be happier. The only annoying thing is the flat spotting of the rear tires the first few miles you drive.

Why not mix tyres? 215 in front and 245 back! Due/down to economy? 245 on 7,5” rims is stretching as far as possible.

You are correct. 245 on a 7.5" rim is the max. I could have put wider wheels on the front but received good feedback from other i8 owners who put 245s on the stock 7.5" wide rims up front and they indicated that the understeer went away, so I plus sized mainly because of that. The rear wheels are 8.5" wide so I decided to also plus size the rear as well. The tires fill the wheel arch better and make it appear as if the car was lowered. 215mm on 7.5" front, and 245mm on 8.5" rear, were the factory sizes. I just added 30mm to both.

Sadly, I have no experience with aftermarket wheels. I saw some posts on the Bimmerpost forum, a few years ago, which showed different offsets that work with the i8. But I have no idea what works and what to suggest.

The 2019 and 2020 cars don't have as much understeer in the front. There were some changes to reduce that. However you still don't have as much feedback in the steering wheel because the tires are skinnier.

Question, does the stock W style wheel for the front fit a 245 width tire and the rear fit a 275 with tire? The W style r front is 7.5” and rear is 8.5” width, will the upgrade tire size fit? Yes, the W style wheel will support the same dimension tires that I installed on my i8.

You are correct. The different styles of wheels are the exact same width. BMW offered both styles during my model year to owners. So, both the W style and the Turbine style wheels are are 7.5" wide in the front and 8.5" wide in the rear.

Pat you mentioned that the car appears lower with the upsized tires. Is it a visual effect or is the car actually lower which could mean lower clearance

The gap between the top of the tire and the fender is smaller because the wider tires fill that gap and everyone thinks the car is on lowering springs because of that. The actual height of the car is a little bit higher because the diameter of the tires is a little bit bigger than stock. But everyone thinks it's lowered.

There were two factory wheels on the i8. One was 7" wide, the others were 7.5" wide. The 7" wide wheels were the ones with a ton of visible silver aluminum. The others, with small spokes, were 7.5" wide. Both of my wheels are factory OEM and 7.5" wide, so the 245mm wide tires fit. They're still oversized and outside the "recommended" width by .5" but I've been extremely happy with them.

Hey pat looking at purchasing conti extreme contact dw 06 for my Jetta tdi wagon vs. conti control contact sport srs. The srs are built specifically for discount tire By continental. Which tire would you recommend live in the mountains so lots of snow driving.

Hi and thanks for the question. I've installed the Conti Extreme Contact DWS06 on my 2015 Dodge Dart and have been happy with them. They were noisy and rode hard the first 1k miles and then became very quiet and comfortable. I'm not sure why. However, I have not had the chance to test these in any snow at all. I live in MD and it's been a very warm winter so far. So, I may not be the best person to ask, sadly. I'm not familiar with the Control Contact Sport SRS tires. So, I may not be of much help. I hope you are able to find some better reviews or recommendations, however.

Yes. The overall width at the sidewalk was only 5/8" wider on those tires. It doesn't make much sense but those DWS06 sidewalls must be built differently than the S001 sidewalls. I had no rubbing but I can't get a pinky finger between the tire and upper control fork. It's tight. But, zero rubbing or issues for 10k miles.

Not that I know of. With a 45% profile on those 235 tires, you have a 105.75mm sidewall height. Stock is 45% of 215, for a 96.75mm sidewall height. So, there may be rubbing, the speedometer will display incorrectly and the performance will decrease since you're running a bigger diameter tire overall. But, you'd have to test it out and see if that works for you or not. I went with 245/40 which is a 98mm sidewall height. It was close to factory, but my speedometer is 1 mph slower than what the GPS in my phone says. Also, many other people on the bimmerpost.com forum were running this. Do you get steering wobbles with these tires?

No. I only get flat spots on the rear tires. So it feels like a mild bump for about a mile and then goes away. A friend of mine had a similar experience with these tires.

@@PatsGarageOnline do they have a soft sidewall of something. Does increasing psi combat it?

I experienced wobbles once with these tires. This was corrected for me by making sure all tires were at the same PSI. A tire place overcharged three of my tires and left one extremely offset. Once corrected, wobble steering went away. This happened when the tires were new and I cannot blame the tires for that, it was the installer incompetent ass.

@@PatsGarageOnline Good to know. I was running OEM summer and winter sets. Summer were costing me $2,700 (CND) and winter $2,600 (CND) to replace. OEM Potenza felt super soft and cornered well, but wore out really fast. I had total of 14 months on them. I just ordered the Continental tires based on your video for $1,500 installed. I am going to save over $3,200 because I only have to run 1 set of tires now. Additionally, this size is way easier to source - at least in my area and lots were in stock. Thanks for the video. Super helpful.

Forgot to mention - they now have the ExtremeContact DWS 06 PLUS ... so I ordered those. Tread pattern different than yours. Let's see how they do.

BMW wanted to reduce rolling resistance, so it improved efficiency and lowered carbon emissions. They also wanted a quieter ride. EU regulations are more strict than the US, so we're actually allowed to run wider tires than OEM. Other countries, that actually breaks the law. Crazy.
